BIRKENHEAD PRIMARY SCHOOL Newsletter 19 June 2020 Kia Ora Whanau, We are now at the end of week 10 of term and have two weeks to go, the combination of tiredness and limited social interaction with peers during the lockdown is bringing about more physical and emotional behaviour than normal. We will continue to remind children to be kind, to breath before reacting and many other emotional regulation strategies. It would be great for families to continue these conversations at home and to check in with your children about how they are feeling. We have just posted this months topic of happiness and gratitude from SchoolTV to support a conversation around our current wellbeing. We would like to give you a heads up that parent teacher conferences scheduled for this term will take place early term 3 on Thursday 6 August. Bookings for this will open early in term 3. Student achievement data will also be available on @school prior to these evenings. We have a teacher only day booked for Friday 14 August, Northcote Intermediate will have a teacher only day on the same day. This will allow for collaborative professional learning between our schools. Skids will operate on this day if you do require child care, but this could be an opportunity for a winter long weekend. While we are now in Alert Level 1, the Ministry of Health still advises us to stay home if we are, or feel, unwell. If your child is unwell please keep them at home. If they become unwell at school, we are required to ring parents to collect them. If your child is going to be absent, please email: [email protected] or leave a detailed message on the absence line. Lastly, a reminder school start and finish times are now back to normal - class starts at 8.50am and all children are to be collected after 3.00pm. Staff will continue to monitor the gates until 3.10pm if want to stagger your collection time slightly. Please remember to sign your children in and out of school if you are collecting them during school hours. Yesterday our teacher said that we were goingto play with kinetic sand. “Yay” I thought. “I’llfinally be able to play with kinetic sand”.Shannon said to me, “Have you ever playedwith kinetic sand?” Actually I have. Just thenMrs Marshall told the class we were goingoutside to play with the kinetic sand. We wentoutside. We sat in a circle on the tarpaulin. MrsMarshall gave me a bit of kinetic sand. I triedto make a ball but it kept on crumbling. It didnot matter. It felt so good. Finally I made aball. Just then Mrs Marshall said “5 minutesmore”. There next to me was Shannon andCaitlin. I saw they were dropping kinetic sandballs down onto the tarpaulin. I tried to do ittoo. I did not realise how strong the kineticsand was. By Yasmin, Room 8
