Evolution of Helmets

Helmetsareinusesincecenturies...Inmythologyaswellashistory,helmetswerewornbygodsandhistoricalpersonalitiesasasymbolofpowerandwereobviouslyalwaysintendedtokeeptheir heads out of reach of the devils and villainswho stood against them. AfilmabouthistimeinWW1wasreleasedin1962(LawrenceofArabia),furthercementinghisplaceinthechroniclesofhistory.Hediedfromheadinjuriesattheageof46aftercrashinghismotorbike.Hisdeathwasmournedbymany,includingtheneurosurgeonthattendedtohim,Dr.HughCairns.CairnswassodeeplyaffectedbythelossofLawrence,thathewasinspired to researchways toprotectmotorcyclists’heads in the event of a crash. Another man alsocame up with the idea for a motorcycle helmet,ProfessorC.E.LombardoftheUniversityofSouthernCalifornia. He developed and patented a helmetthathad an internal layer intended to absorb anddisperse the impact of shock. As technology andmaterials production continues to improve, so dohelmets.Infacts,helmetshavebecomesoeffectiveand important when saving lives, that manycountrieshavemandatedtheirusewhileriding.

Inthistimeperiod,HarleyDavidsonandIndianMotorcycles started to build high-speedmotorcycles. There was stiff competitionbetweenthesetwocompaniesastowhocanbuild the fastest motorcycle. As the speedincreased,sodidthefatalities.

The most recognized helmet testingcompanyandaworldleaderintoday’stimes,theSnellMemorialFoundationwassetupin1957 inmemoryofWilliam“Pete”Snellwhowaskilledinatragicsportscaraccident.

Though there was clear proof that helmetssaved a lot of lives and the importance ofwearing helmetswas emphasized time andagain,therewasnolawpassedanywhereinthe world that made it mandatory to wearahelmet.Due to this absenceof law,manypeopleavoidedusinghelmetsastheyfelt itlookedgrossanduncool.Onjanuary1,1961thefirst evermandatorymotorcyclehelmetlawwasintroducedinAustralia.

The strict code launched in 1966 did notlast long. In 1975, 47 states had introducedmandatory helmet laws. But after the strictcodewasrevokedbytheCongress,morethanhalf of the states removed the mandatorylaws.

Following suit, in the United States theHighway Safety Act was introduced whichrequired all the states in the US to havemandatory helmet laws. Following the lawwastheonlyoptionleft.Thisyearalsosawtheemergence of the American National SafetyStandardforMotorcycleHelmetswhichmadeit essential for the helmetmanufacturers tomeetcertainperformancestandards.

In 1971, Bell developed the first full-facemotorcycle helmet and off-roadmotorcyclehelmet. In 1964, the US Department ofTransportation made it compulsory forhelmet manufacturers to adhere to strictmanufacturing standards and get theirhelmetsDOTapproved.

Though the manufacture of helmets didnotstop,theirpopularity,overtheyearshasdecreased significantly. With this declinein popularity, the death rate caused due tohead injuries sees a new high every day.Thereishoweveraneedtocreateawarenessregarding the benefits of helmets and howvitalaroletheycanplayinsavingapreciouslife.

VikingEraHelmetsTodaythereisonlyoneknownexampleofacompleteVikinghelmetinexistence.Thesehelmetsdatetothe10thcentury.ThehornedhelmetsassociatedwiththeVikingsinpopularmythologyweretheinventionof19th-centuryRomanticism.ItispossiblethatmanyoftheVikinghelmetsweremade fromhardened leatherand ironstrips, sincemany Icelandicstoriesareassociatedwiththehelmets.
