ne of the most popular parks in Manitoba, there are always things to see and do at Birds Hill. The early 19th century brought the first settlers to the Red River area, including James Curtis Bird, the namesake of the park. Recognized for its natural features, the park was established in 1967 to commemorate Canada’s 100th birthday. Today, thousands of people come here to experience what a beautiful Manitoba summer has to offer – friends, fun and sun.
This park’s rolling hills and deep ridges are all that remain of the glaciers that once covered this area. Despite being a mere 20 minutes away from Winnipeg, the aspen/oak parkland and native prairie is home to wildlife like deer, waterfowl and songbirds. The park is a mosaic of landscapes including esker ridges, dry prairie, wet meadows, bogs, and aspen-oak and mixed boreal forest communities.
Visit the park interpreters to learn about prairie ecology, white-tailed deer or the old town of Pine Ridge. Go on a guided hike, share a campfire story or watch the amphitheatre shows. Bur Oak and White-tailed Deer self-guiding trails feature informative signs so visitors can learn about the park as they explore.
Paved and natural surface trails allow bicyclists, rollerbladers, hikers and cross-country skiers to weave their way through the park. Horse stables and equestrian facilities are available as well as pony and hay rides. For a good view of the park take a driving tour around the North and South Drives. Birds Hill campground offers 476 sites, with a choice of basic, electrical or full service camping.
In addition to being a natural habitat for wildlife, Birds Hill is a natural gathering place for people. It is home to one of North America’s largest folk music events, the Winnipeg Folk Festival, as well as a range of other year-round recreational activities and sporting events. Triathlons, orienteering, and equestrian events can be seen at the park every summer. Groups also like to use the facilities for private gatherings like family reunions.
More information on Birds Hill Campground and Birds Hill Provincial Park is available on request from the park office.
