Birds Hill Provincial Park A perfect place for a swim, an afternoon picnic or a scenic getaway Birds Hill O Campground Tips • Be sure matches are extinguished. Do not litter. • Be sensitive to wildlife. Bears can be dangerous and should not be fed. Food must be stored away from your campsite, preferably in a locked vehicle, to avoid attracting hungry animals. Do not store food in your tent. • Warm clothing is needed for cool nights. • The use of insect repellent will add to your comfort. • Learn to recognize and avoid poisonous plants such as poison ivy. • In case of injury or illness contact a Campground Attendant or Park Patrol Officer. They can assist you to reach medical help. • Canoeists and hikers travelling in backcountry areas should advise a friend of their intended destination and anticipated length of trip. • Backcountry camping is only allowed at designated campsites. • It is illegal to use or transport elm firewood. The early 19th century brought the first settlers to the Red River area, including James Curtis Bird, the namesake of the park. Recognized for its natural features, the park was established in 1967 to commemorate Canada’s 100 th birthday. Today, thousands of people come here to experience what a beautiful Manitoba summer has to offer – friends, fun and sun. This park’s rolling hills and deep ridges are all that remain of the glaciers that once covered this area. Despite being a mere 20 minutes away from Winnipeg, the aspen/oak parkland and native prairie is home to wildlife like deer, waterfowl and songbirds. The park is a mosaic of landscapes including esker ridges, dry prairie, wet meadows, bogs, and aspen-oak and mixed boreal forest communities. Visit the park interpreters to learn about prairie ecology, white-tailed deer or the old town of Pine Ridge. Go on a guided hike, share a campfire story or watch the amphitheatre shows. Bur Oak and White-tailed Deer self-guiding trails feature informative signs so visitors can learn about the park as they explore. Paved and natural surface trails allow bicyclists, rollerbladers, hikers and cross-country skiers to weave their way through the park. Horse stables and equestrian facilities are available as well as pony and hay rides. For a good view of the park take a driving tour around the North and South Drives. Birds Hill campground offers 476 sites, with a choice of basic, electrical or full service camping. In addition to being a natural habitat for wildlife, Birds Hill is a natural gathering place for people. It is home to one of North America’s largest folk music events, the Winnipeg Folk Festival, as well as a range of other year-round recreational activities and sporting events. Triathlons, orienteering, and equestrian events can be seen at the park every summer. Groups also like to use the facilities for private gatherings like family reunions. Trails:• Paved path on North & South Drive's for in-line skating & cyclists. Use protective gear at all times. Skate/cycle single file. Please do not park vehicles on this path.

• Many of the park trails are designed for multiple uses. Please respect other users encountered along the trails.

• Trails are kept in a natural state. Users may encounter wet trail conditions.

• Please obey all directional and regulatory signing and remain on designated trail routes.

• All self-guiding interpretive trails and the Chickadee Trail are for the use of hikers only.

• All pets must be in direct physical control at all times. eg. leashed, harnessed.

• The Tamarack and Hazelnut trails may be wet in spring and after a rainfall. Please protect the ecosystem by staying on the trails.

Cycling:• Please be aware of other trail users and ride with care.

• Ride with extreme caution.

Horseback Riding:• Areas of the park shaded green on the map, have been designated for horseback riding. Horseback riders must stay on designated horse trails. Horses are not permitted in other areas of the park.

• Horses are permitted only beside the paved shoulder on South Drive and Nimowin Road up to the Riding Stable.

• Please help us keep the park clean by picking up after your dog.

Horse-drawn Vehicles:• Horse-drawn vehicles may use the Carriage Way Trail and Bridle Path as well as the grass area beside the shoulder on South Drive and Nimowin Road as far as the riding stable/equestrian area. Please stay off the polo fields.

• Horse-drawn vehicles require a reflective slow moving vehicle sign and, if used after dark, a legal lighting system.

• Horse-drawn vehicles are subject to the traffic regulations on roads and to park entry fees.

Fishing:• Kingfisher Lake is stocked annually in the spring with rainbow and brown trout.

• A valid Manitoba Fishing Licence is required and all fishing regulations must be adhered to.

• Children must be supervised near the water’s edge.

• Motorized boats are not permitted on Kingfisher Lake.
