Birding Trip Ecuador 25 june-25 july 2014
By Daniel Arias, Gabriel Marcacci, Julien Mazenauer and Chris Venetz

Introduction
During august 2013, we decided to organise on our own a 1-month birding
trip through Ecuador that would take place during june and july 2014. We
were lucky to meet Daniel Arias (a young Ecuadorian birdwatcher) in
Switzerland 8 month before the trip. We discussed with him and he was very
interested by folllowing us for the whole trip to discover the best spots of his
country. Our main goal was to find the numerous typical Andean birds such
as Andean Condor, Andean Ibis, Giant Conebill, Rufous-bellied Seedsnipe
and of course some endemic targets like Violet-throated Metaltail, Jocotoco
Antpitta, El Oro Parakeet, etc. Indeed we wanted to see as much species as
possible during 1 month, by visiting the best parts of the whole country, from
the far north to the far south.
Daniel was back in Ecuador several months before our trip and could arrange
a rental car and some accomodations for us. To plan everything, we used the
very good website of Lelis Navarrete ‘Where to find birds in Ecuador’
(birdsinecuador.com). You will find almost every good spots with maps,
explanations on access roads, the major targets, etc. Thanks to the incredible
job that did Lelis, birding the whole Ecuador became accessible to everyone!
If you hesitate on going on your own for such a trip, don’t hesitate anymore,
Ecuador is an easy birding destination! The directions are often well indicated.
We also used many trip reports found on Cloudbirders
(www.cloudbirders.com) and one good trip report sent by a danish friend
(just ask if you would like to read it). Many of the visited reserves were owned
by the fundacion de conservacion Jocotoco. To visit their reserve, go on their
website and contact them (fjocotoco.org), you will find all the informations
needed. If you need more extra informations on access, targets, practical,
don’t hesitate to ask us.
Safety
During the whole trip, we didn’t felt a single time unsafe. We would maybe
avoid to spent too many time outside at night in big cities of the coast (e.g.
Machala, where we had to spend one night after our car breakdown). Trafic
is along the coast quite busy with many big trucks. Except this, we found the
ecuadorian roads safe.
Weather
We encountered during this trip all kinds of weather, from the dry and hot
coast to The Amazoninan rain forest as well as the cold and humid cloud
forest of the Andes. Despite the heavy rain sometimes in the west slope we
didn’t felt that it was much more complicate to find the birds. But we suggest
to consult Lelis Navarrete’s website to find more specific informations about
weather.

Accomodations and food
We spent the major part of our nights in cheap hotels or lodges, found on our
way without previous booking. There was no problem to find hotels in small
towns, even without making reservations before. To be sure for the lodges,
you better have to book in advance. Globally, the cheap hotels costed us
around 10 USD per night. We also spent some nights camping. Usually, you
can arrange with the lodges to got a camping place. If we had to spend one
more month in Ecuador, we would not worry much about finding a place to
sleep. You will find during your trip many small restaurants serving rice, vegetables
and meat for around 2-3 USD, incredibly cheap compared to the european
ones ! There are no problems to find food in Ecuador.

Here are the birding sites we visited during the trip. Most of time was spent in
the north-western part of the country (Choco bioregion) where we
considered necessary to spent enough time to find the numerous targets. We
spent unfortunatlly only 4 days in Amazonia (very expensive!). The second
part of the trip was focussed on birding in the south with also many nice
targets like the Jocotoco Antpitta. The last few days were spent along the
coast where many new important species were found like Inca Tern, Tumbes
endemics, etc.
Ecuadorian birdwatching is probably one of the easiest way to discover the
neotropics and its incredible biodiversity. Distances between birding sites are
short and roads are most of the time quite good.

Daily report
25/06 (day 1): Geneva - Quito Our flight from Geneva arrived in Quito in the end of the afternoon. Daniel
was waiting for us at the airport and brought us to Conocoto, in the
neighborhood of Quito. We made our first birding there: Black-tailed
Trainbearers (our first ever hummer, what a bird!), Sparkling Violetears, Rusty
Flowerpiercer (the only one of the trip), Saffron Finch, Grassland Yellow-finch,
Vermillion Flycatcher, Southern-Beardless Tyrannulet etc. We slept at Daniel’s
parent’s house, all very excited about the next morning.
Black-tailed trainbearer, Quito. Chris Venetz
26/07 (day 2): Quito – Yanacocha – Bellavista Cloud Forest We left Quito early in the morning to avoid the traffic around the capital.
During the climb up to 3500m to reach the Yanacocha reserve, we made
stops every hundred meters (birds were really everywhere!): Cinereous
Conebill, Black, Glossy and White-sided Flowerpiercer, Paramo Pipit on the
road, Southern Yellow Grosbeak, Scarlet-bellied and Black-chinned
Mountain-Tanager, Yellow-breasted Brush-Finch, Tyrian Metaltail, Shining
Sunbeam, Buff-Tailed Coronet and many more. From the road we spotted the
first Andean Condor for the trip, rarely seen there.
Arrived in the reserve, we just saw our first Sword-billed Hummingbird in flight.
During the walk along the main trail, we managed to see : Masked
Flowerpiercer, Purple-backed Thornbill, Sword-billed Hummingbird, Crowned
Chat-Tyrant, Andean Guan, etc. Suddenly, a stunning male of the endemic
Black-breasted Puffleg appeared in front of us, around 300m before the
feeding station. It stayed sitting and flying in front of us for the next 3 minuts,
before disappearing.

After this, we went back to the car and began to go down to Tandayapa
Valley by the Old Mindo Road, making regular stops along our route: Blue-
and-black Tanager (the only ones of the trip), Spectacled and Slate-throated
Whitestart, Crimson-mantled Woodpecker, Speckled Hummingbird, Blue-
winged Mountain-Tanager and a female Andean Cock-of-the-Rock along
the road. We were greeted at Bellavista Lodge by a Beautiful Jay just before
darkness. A few minuts before total dark, we already saw some hummingbirds
at the feeders, like the typical Booted Racket-tail. We built our tents just
above the accommodations of the reserve, at the usual camping place. A
Common Potoo was sitting on the entrance of the lodge (like all nights) and
Band-winged Nightjar gave nice views on the road. The camping place costs
8 dollars per night per person and full access to the trails is guaranteed. Just
send an e-mail to the Bellavista Cloud forest Lodge for this (we highly
recommand this option for those with low budget). You can also take a bird
guide from the lodge to find the most difficult species.
27/07 (day 3) : Bellavista We woke up in paradise: from our tents we had a great view of the
Tandayapa Valley. Our first morning in the cloud forest was incredible with
many emblematic species : Plate-Billed Mountain Toucan, Toucan Barbet,
Turquoise Jay, Sickled-Wing Guan, Collared Inca, Booted Racket-tailed,
Strong-billed and Montane Woodcreeper, Lineated Foliage-gleaner, Russet-
crowned Warbler etc. All these birds just from lodge and in one hour! We
spent the rest of the morning on the trails : Green-and-black Fruiteater, Grass-
7
green, Golden, Golden-naped, Beryl-spangled, Flame-faced and Black-
caped Tanager, Spillmann’s Tapaculo, Masked Trogon, Rufous-headed
Pygmy-tyrant (skulking low in the dense vegetation inside the forest),
Flavescent and Cinnamon Flycatcher. We heard from the road just above the
lodge a White-faced Nunbird but couldn’t locate it. During the afternoon, we
went to Tony Nunnery’s Hummingbird Garden, just a few kilometers under the
Bellavista lodge. There was many hummingbird feeders in his garden which is
a very attractive place for Hummingbirds : Violet-tailed Sylph, Green and
Brown Violetear, Violet-fronted Brilliant, Empress Brilliant, White-bellied
Woodstar, White-necked Jacobin, Rufous-tailed Hummingbird, Booted
Racket-tail, Purple-bibbed Whitetip, Wedge-billed Hummingbird etc. This
garden is probably the best place of the Tandayapa Valley to look for
hummingbirds, go there to give him a visit! You don’t need to book anything,
just go and ring the bell. The entrance is not well marked, look at Lelis
Navarrete’s website for directions. We also had some good flocks with a pair
of Red-Headed Barbet, some Woodcreepers, Warblers and many more.

28/06 (day 4): Bellavista – Paz de las Aves
We started the day early and visited Angel Paz’s reserve, a well known place
for Antpittas. Just arrived, we heard some screams coming from the jungle, a
lek of Andean Cock-of-the-Rocks! Here, several males danced in noise while
some females were sitting around. We walked along the trail looking for the
Antpittas. Angel Paz is feeding them for years now. With him, we had the
chance to see Rufous-breasted Anttrush, Ochre-breasted, Chestnut-crowned,
Yellow-breasted and Giant Antpittas, Cloud-forest Pygmy-Owl, Powerful
8
Woodpecker, Golden-headed Quetzal, White-capped Dipper, Golden-
winged Manakin, Velvet-purple Coronet, Crimson-rumped Toucanet, Toucan
Barbet, Golden, Lemon-rumped and Blue-grey Tanager. After a delicious
breakfast at Angel’s house, we came back to Bellavista to try the rare
Tanager Finch. Arrived in Bellavista, we were really « in the cloud »: the fog
was so deep that we almost couldn’t see anything. We heard a Tanager
Finch and had a glimpse of it.

29/06 (day 5): Bellavista – Tandayapa – Mindo
We visited the Tandayapa Bird Lodge the half of the morning. Along the trails
we saw Immaculate Antbird (our first Antbird), Rufous-breasted Antthrush,
Yellow, Rufous-winged and Ashy-headed Tyrannulet, Tawny-breasted
Tinamou, Speckled-faced Parrot. As the weather was good, we looked for the
Spot-fronted Swift, which is not well understood and rare. The Tandayapa
valley holds some populations of this species and after one hour of research
9
we got good views of it : two birds flying with many Chesnut-collared Swift,
just over the valley. We birded a bit the access road and found some new
birds, including Golden-rumped Euphonia. We decided to go to lower
elevations and went down in direction of the Mindo Valley. We had a quick
stop at Sachatamia Lodge for picnic and did some nice observations like
Brown Inca, Palm Tanager, Streak-headed and Tyrranine Woodcreepers,
Orange-crowned Euphonia Toucan Barbet, Spotted Barbtail, Ringed Kingfisher
or Golden-winged Manakin. Arrived in Mindo, we went to the Yellow House
where we slept two nights. Before darkness, we saw Rufous Motmot, Squirrel
Cuckoo, Social and Rusty-margined Flycatcher and Blue-necked Tanager.
Toucan Barbet, Sachatamia lodge. C.Venetz Rufous Motmot, Mindo. C.Venetz
30/06 (day 6): Mindo
We spent our morning on the trails which start from the Yellow House. We saw
our first Yellow-throated Toucan and Choco Toucan, Guayaquil Woodpecker,
Golden-hooded Tanager, Masked Tityra, Scale-crested Pygmy-tyrant,
Smokey-brown Woodpecker, Pacific Antwren, Western Woodhaunter, Yellow-
crowned Tyrranulet, Greenish Elaenia, Dusky-capped Flycatcher, Scale-
crested Pygmy Tyrant. We even had a Andean Cock-of-the-Rock in flight. As
the afternoon was rainy, we walked along the famous “old road”. We got
some interesting birds : Ringed Kingfisher, Bronze-winged Parrot, a good
sighting of Little Cuckoo, Wedge-billed Woodcreeper, Olivaceous Piculet, Bay
Wren, Fawn-breasted Tanager and Guira Tanager. At the end of the road
there is a career which is a good spot for Lyre-tailed Nightjar. We waited for
the night and we saw first two females, and finally, we had great views of a
male with its amazing tail in flight! Surely one of the birds of the trip. Then we
tried a known spot for the Black-and-white Owl but it started to rain and we
went back to the Yellow House.

Pacific Hornero, Mindo, 30.06. Gabriel Marcacci
01/07 (day 7): Mindo – Mangaloma We returned for the morning on the same road as the last day. We had some
new species like Swallow and Rufous-throated Tanager, Broad-billed Motmot,
Pacific Hornero, Choco and Sooty-headed Tyrannulet, Masked Water-tyrant
and Purple-crowned Fairy. The afternoon, we started to go down to Choco
lowlands, but we stopped at Mangaloma for a one-night stay. As nobody
was aware of our visit, we had first some problems to do camping in this
reserve, but finally everything went very well. Mangaloma is a good place to
see the Banded Ground-cuckoo, Long-wattled Umbrellabird, Rufous-crowned
Gnatpitta and many Choco endemics. On our arrival we immediately
spotted a Tiny Hawk. Along the trails of the reserve we saw many flocks with
Plain Xenops, Olive-crowned Yellowthroat, Buff-rumped Warbler, Three-striped
Warbler, Emerald Tanager, Dot-winged and White-flanked Antwren and
White-bearded Manakin, Olivaceous Piha, Pacific Flatbill, Golden-crowned
Spadebill and Choco Warbler. In the garden we saw : Violet-bellied
Hummingbird and Scarlet-backed Woodpecker. We slept in a beautiful yoga
pavilion in the middle of the jungle. During the night, we had a great view of
the stunning Crested Owl over our sleeping place.
02/07 (day 8) : Mangaloma – Rio Canandé reserve
In the morning, we made good birding in the gardens of the lodge with our
first Pale-mandible Araçari, Double-toothed Kite, Chesnut-backed Antbird,
Band-backed Wren, Marble-faced Bristle Tyrant, Western Sirystes. We left
Mangaloma the afternoon for the Rio Canandé Reserve in Esmeraldas. After
four hours of very bad roads and a car breakdown, we arrived at last at the
reserve (we thougth we would never get there). Fortunately, we had a great
view of Laughing Falcon, Barred Puffbird, Ecuadorian Ground Dove and many
11
Yellow-throated Toucan, on the road to Canandé, 02.07, Gabriel Marcacci
Blue-black Grassquit to make up the bad drive. Before darkness, we had time
to see many new birds from the little observation tower next to the lodge :
Stripe-billed Aracari, Rose-face Parrot, Blue-headed Parrot, Mealy Amazon,
Long-tailed Tyrant, Blue-faced, Scarlet-breasted, Yellow-tufted and Scarlet-
thighed Dacnis, Purple and Green Honeycreeper, Scarler-browed Tanager,
Orange-fronted Barbet, Piratic, Streaked and Grey-capped Flycatcher. We
had booked two rooms with a kitchen for three nights. This can be arranged
by contacting the Jocotoco Fundation. The access road is very bad, you will
need a 4x4 WD but this spot is probably one of the best birding spot of the
neotropics! We highly recommend to visit the Rio Canandé reserve. Contact
the foundation to arrange a visit of this unique place.

03/07 (day 9) : Canandé
Our guide waiting for us at 6 :00 am. First we heard a few Little Tinamous and
a Barred Forest-Falcon. We walked along the trails and noticed that it is much
more easy to localize the birds with someone who can identify their calls.
After some 200m on the main trail under the lodge, a kind of strange terrestrial
cuckoo run in front of us: no doubt, that was the very rare Banded Ground-
cuckoo! Only the guide and Chris had the chance to see it. Lucky them! The
rest of the morning offered us some good ground-floor birds with a flock of
Antbirds (Bicoloured, Zeledon’s, Spotted and Ocellated Antbird) whenever
the ground was crawling with ants. Other birds including Blue-crowned,
Green and Red-capped Manakin, the rare Sapayoa, Spot-crowned Antvireo,
Lemon-spectacled and Ochre-breasted Tanager, we heard the enigmatic
Rufous-crowned Gnatpitta several times but didn’t manage to see it. Since
midday, it began to be too hot for the forest birds. Thus, we spent the « hot
hours » looking for raptors from the tower. Many raptors were flying above the
canopy, like the rare Grey-backed Hawk, Ornate Hawk-eagle, Black-and-
white Hawk-eagle, King Vulture etc. In the end of the afternoon, we walked
until the nearest village to buy some water. On the road, we got Choco
Tyrannulet, Cinnamon Woodpecker, White-tailed Trogon, Blue-black Grassquit
and Yellow-bellied Siskin.
13
Zeledon’s Antbird, Canandé, 03.07. Chris Venetz
04/07 (day 10) : Canandé
This morning, we went for a six hours walk along the trails with our guide. It was
a great birding day with Rufous Piha, Red-capped Manakin, Great Jacamar
(very rare in Choco), Scarlet-and-white Tanager, Lita Woodpecker, White-
whiskered Puffbird, etc. We also saw a bird species that was not on the
Canandé bird list: Long-billed Gnatwren. We heard again a Rufous-crowned
Gnatpitta just a few meter of us, but as the yesterday and even with the
playback, it was impossible to see this too shy bird. In the end of the trail, a
mirador offer a great view of the canopy. This is the place to look for the
Black-tipped Cotinga. After a while, we found a male Black-tipped Cotinga
perching on the top a tree. We also saw from this point the nearly endemic
Grey-backed Hawk. Other birds were seen like Rufous-winged and Grey-and-
gold Tanager and a Black-and-white Hawk-eagle. We heard Choco
Tapaculo. We spent the rest of the day on the tower and had close views of a
female Black-tipped Cotinga, Tooth-billed Hummingbird and Rufous-tailed
Jacamar. And finally, a massive rain arrived with the night. Esmeraldas is
known to be one of the wettest place in the world, we all think it is true!

Great Jacamar, Rio Canandé. 04.07. Gabriel Marcacci
05/07 (day 11) : Canandé – Quito
We left Canandé in the morning and we travelled for six hours until Quito.
During the drive, we saw Barred Puffbird, Yellow-tailed Oriole, Grey-mantled
Wren, Grey Hawk, Blue and Plain-breasted Ground Dove, Boat-billed
Flycatcher and Red-billed Scythebill. After 10 days spent through the Choco,
we began to bird the eastern part of the Andes and Ecuador.
Barred Puffbird, Rio Canandé, 04.07. Chris Venetz
15
06/07 (day 12) : Quito – Antisana – Papallacta
We left Quito early in the morning for the Antisana Ecological Reserve. We
stopped during the climb, near some careers, good spots for the Giant
Hummingbird. After a short wait we saw one Giant Hummingbird in flight,
Green-tailed Trainbearer and Viridian Metaltail, Black-winged Ground Dove, ,
Yellow-billed Pintail, Brown-backed Chat-Tyrant. Our second stop was in front
of the cliffs. We spotted right away 5 Andean Condor flying together. It was a
dream, as we had only bad views of the first bird at Yanacocha! The third
stop was just next to a little bridge. Here, we saw the nearly endemic
Ecuadorian Hillstar feeding on their orange Chiuquiragua flowers. The next
stop was near the top, where 4 Andean Ibis were flying over us. We then
spotted many more sitting close to the road. We also got some other
paramos birds like Many-striped Canastero, Stout-billed and Chestnut-winged
Cinclode, Plumbeous Sierra Finchs, Paramo Ground Tyrant, Andean Lapwing
and Carunculated Caracara. Walking along a river just before the Mica lake,
we saw Blue-mantled Thornbill and Andean Tit-Spinetail. Arrived in the Mica
lake, we had to show our passport in a little office. On the lake, several Silvery
Grebes, Andean Coots, Andean Ruddy Ducks and Yellow-billed Pintails were
swimming together. We also had views of Andean Snipe, close to the office.
Andean Ibis and Andean Condor, Antisana, 06.07. Gabriel Marcacci.
We left Antisana to go further and higher in the Andes. Next stop : Papallacta
Pass. We went directly to the antennas (the highest place of our trip) where
we tried to find other targets of the high Andes of Ecuador. The most wanted
target here is the Rufous-bellied Seedsnipe. The weather was cold, rainy and
very windy. It was difficult for us who were in the Choco lowlands the previous
days. Fortunately, we directly flushed with the car 2 Rufous-belied Seedsnipes.
They disappeared behind the buildings and we just had to walk a few meters
in order to admire at close range this incredible high-altitude bird. We then
16
birded the slopes around the antennas and found some other birds, like
White-chinned Thistletail (usually seen at lower elevations), Red-rumped Bush-
Tyrant, Grass Wren and also good views of Tawny Antpitta wich doesn’t seem
to be very shy. Then, we went down to the Papallacta village. Here, we found
a hotel with a volcanic hot pool. Just above the hotel, we heard a Paramo
Tapaculo but couldn’t see it.
Rufous-bellied Seedsnipe, Papallacta Pass, 06.07. Gabriel Marcacci
07/07 (day 13) : Papallacta village – Guango Lodge – Baeza
We spent all the day at the Guango Lodge. We made our first birding on the
east slope of the Andes. Despite the heavy rain (it was the wet season on the
eastern slope), we managed to see many new birds in mixed flocks like
Hooded and Lacrimose Mountain-tanager, Barred Becard, Slaty Brush-finch.
A Grey-breasted Mountain-Toucan was standing on a tree just next to the
lodge. The great number of feeders brought a large amount of hummingbird
with Sword-billed Hummingbird, Collared Inca, Long-tailed Sylph, Chesnut-
breasted Coronet, Golden-breasted Puffleg, Tourmaline Sunangel and
Mountain Avocetbill. In the afternoon, we went out again (still wet) and did a
long walk along the trails. We found some more birds like Streak-throated and
Smoky Bush-Tyrant, Slaty-backed Chat-Tyrant, Pale-footed Swallow, Semi-
collared Hawk and many more. After a long time of research along
Papallacta River, we couldn’t locate any Torrent Ducks, but one young
Fasciated Tiger-Heron and some Andean Guans. We left Guango to find a
17
sleeping place near Baeza. Along the road, we stopped on every bridge
looking for Torrent’s Duck. We finally discovered a beautiful male just before
darkness, yes!
Grey-breasted Mountain-toucan, Guango Lodge, 07.07. Gabriel Marcacci.
08/07 (day 14): Baeza – San Isidro – Cosanga
We visited San Isidro all the day. We stayed around the parking for half of the
morning where many birds were feeding near streetlights: Golden-eared
Tanager, Green Jay, Black-billed Peppershrike Saffron-crowned Tanager,
Pale-edged Flycatcher etc. We went to the Antpittas feeders: Chesnut-
crowned Antpitta and White-bellied Antpitta. Then we walked along the
access road to San Isidro : Rufous-crowned Tody-flycatcher, Plumbeous-
crowned Tyrranulet, Dusky Piha, White-throated Toucanet, Crested Quetzal,
Russet-backed Oropendola, Green-fronted Lancebill and Bronzy Inca. The
afternoon, we tried some trails but we didn’t see many birds except a male of
the rare Bicolored Antvireo at close range along the Antvireo trail,
Specktacled Prickletail, Oleaginous Hemispingus and a Black-billed Mountain
Toucan. We also flushed along the same trail a Wattled Guan. We heard a
Peruvian Antpitta but couldn’t locate this shy bird. During the evening we
returned along the access road. We walked for two kilometers down and
stopped next to a panel. Here, we waited for Andean Potoo. After half an
hour, we had incredible views of one Andean Potoo perched on a tree. We
finally tried the « San Isidro Owl » but without success. We slept in a shabby
hostel in Cosanga, probably the worst hotel we had during the trip.
18
09/07 (day 15) : Cosanga – Wildsumaco
We left Cosanga early in the morning in order to be as soon as possible at
Wildsumaco. This 2-day stay at Wildsumaco became one of the top highlight
of our trip! Along the road, we already got some new birds: Silver-beaked
and Magpie Tanager, Yellow-headed Caracara and Black Caracara. An
Amazonian Umbrellabird flew just in front of the car and preched
conspisciously in the forest. We arrived in Wildsumaco Lodge and went
directly to the feeders. Wildsumaco is known to be one of the best place to
see Hummingbirds in Ecuador with many difficult species that are here not so
difficult. Indeed, we had never seen so many in just a few minutes! Booted
Racket-tail (ssp peruanus from the east slope), Gould’s Jewelfront, Gorgeted
Woodstar, Napo Sabrewing, Fork-tailed Woodnymph, Golden-tailed Sapphire,
Rufous-vented Whitetip, Ecuadorian Piedtail and Wire-crested Thorntail. Then,
we walked along the road where we had a great mixed flock with Spotted,
Yellow-bellied and Green-and-gold Tanager, a pair Fiery-throated Fruiteater
(rarest and smallest Fruiteater of the Neotropics), Golden-faced and
Ecuadorian Tyrranulet, Slaty Finch, Little Woodpecker, Dark-breasted Spinetail,
Golden-eyed Flowerpiercer, Yellow-cheeked Becard, Black Antbird and
Lined Antshrike. We returned to the lodge for the lunch. Suddenly, we heard
Chris screaming at us. He just found a large raptor flying with 2 Swallow-tailed
Kite. It was the very rare and unpredictable Mountain Solitary Eagle!
Everybody from the lodge ran to watch this impressive bird. We spent the
afternoon on the trails where we got : Chestnut-crowned Gnateater,
Olivaceous Woodcreeper, Staly-capped Shrike-Vireo and Foothill Schiffornis.
We heard from the forest the deep call of Military Macaws. After this amazing
birding day, we slept in a hut in a little village five kilometers far from the
lodge. To do like this (very cheaper alternative), you can just speak to
Wildsumaco lodge’s manager, he will put you in contact with the local
community. Go to Wildsumaco, the access is easy and you will for sure see
many good birds.
Mountain Solitary Eagle, Wildsumaco, 09.07. Gabriel Marcacci.
19
10/07 (day 16) : Wildsumaco
This morning, we first went to Anpittas feeders, where we saw the stunning
Spotted Nightingale-Trush. They are feeding Plain-backed Antpitta, but this
morning we had no luck for this. We spent the rest of the day on the trails but
even the rain was too strong for the birds, we managed to see Fulvous Shrike-
Tanager, White-streaked Antvireo and Black-faced Antbird. Then we went to
other Hummingbird feeders in the middle of the forest. Here we got the
Lazuline Sabrewing, a rare and erratic Hummingbird. Around the feeders we
found Short-tailed Antthrush. We stayed around the lodge all the afternoon
and found many good birds such as Paradise Tanager, Golden-collared
Honeycreeper, Chesnut-bellied Seedeater, Crested Oropendola, Gilded
Barbet, White-throated Toucan, Many-banded Araçari, Chestnut-eared
Araçari, Yellow-tufted Woodpecker and Chesnut-fronted Macaw. The rain
finally stopped in the evening, thus we decided to try some nightbirds. We
heard many Band-bellied Owl and some Rufescent Screech-Owls but
unfortunately, we saw nothing. There is also a spot for Great Potoo, close to
the second hummingbird feeding place, but we failed.
Wire-crested Thorntail, Wildsumaco, 10.07. Gabriel Marcacci.
20
11/07 (day 17) : Wildsumaco – Gareno lodge
We woke up, packed our stuff and walked from our little village to the lodge.
On the road, some screams attracted our attention : 2 of the rare and hard to
see Military Macaw were flying low over the forest. Other birds seen: Tawny-
breasted Myiobius and Olive-chested Flycatcher. It was the best birding
place that we encountered during our trip in Ecuador. Next stop : the
Amazonian rainforest ! On the way, we stopped just beside the road at a spot
for the very local Cliff Flycatcher, which we found easily. There was also a spot
for Blackish Nightjar but we failed in finding the exact location. We also had a
good flock of the localized Spot-winged Parrotlet. We arrived by midday at
Tena, where we met Sandro, owner of Gareno Lodge. He brought us first in a
little lagoon where, we saw our first Amazonian specialities like Hoatzin or
Sungrebe. Then we stopped in a clearing before the Gareno Lodge, where
we found White-eared Jacamars and Violaceous Jays. We finally arrived in
Gareno and we went directly through the jungle (there was no trail) to see
the mythic Rufous Potoo. It was perched on a tree just a few meters in front of
us, rocking back and forth to mimic the movement of the leaves. After taking
possession of our bungalows, we made our first birding around the lodge :
Cream-colored Woodpecker, Pink-throated Becard, Pygmy Antwren, Mottle-
backed Elaenia, Masked Crimson Tanager, etc.

12/07 (day 18) : Gareno lodge
We spent the beginning of the morning around the lodge. We were watching
the strange-looking Buff-tailed Sicklebill feeding on Heliconia plants when
Sandro called us: he just found a stunning male of the rare Fiery Topaz in flight
above the little river next to the open-air dining-room! Then, Sandro
accompanied us on a trail where we had many new birds like Black-fronted
Nunbird, Ivory-billed Araçari, Ash-throated Gnateater, Western Striped
Manakin, Coraya Wren, Fulvous-crested Tanager, Masked, Turquoise, Opal-
rumped and Opal-crowned Tanager. But Gareno seems most of all to be
great place for Antbirds with a festival of species: Sooty, Spot-winged, Grey,
and Yellow-browed Antbird, Peruvian Warbling Antbird, Rio Suno, Pygmy,
Long-winged, Slaty and Grey Antwren, Mouse-colored, Dusky-throated, Plain-
winged and Cinereous Antshrike, etc. Sandro knows almost every song of
them! The afternoon, we returned on different trails: Plumbeous Kite, White
Hawk, Golden-headed Manakin, Ocellated and Straight-billed Woodcreeper
Screaming Piha, Black-bellied Cuckoo and a flock containing 5 Woodpecker
species (including Chestnut and Cream-coloured Woodpeckers). As the
water pump of the lodge was broken and we didn’t have water supply
anymore, we took a bath in the river next to the lodge. The evening, we tried
to find some nightbirds along the road. When night falls, many previously
invisible animals come out to hunt like snakes, frogs or tarentulas. This night
walk was a succes with Short-tailed Nighthawk, Tropical Screech-Owl and a
Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl eating a big lizard. We also heard some Nocturnal
Curassows but couldn’t see them.
13/07 (day 19) : Gareno Lodge
We spent the morning walking along the road where we got some new good
species: Spangled Cotinga and Purple-throated Cotinga, Brown Jacamar,
Blue-backed Manakin, Black-headed Parrot, Double-banded Pygmy Tyrant,
Red-legged and Short-billed Honeycreeper, White-bellied Dacnis, Rufous-
tailed Antwren, Coraya Wren, Yellow-backed Tanager etc. Then, we took the
car with Sandro and went at the edge of the Napo river. We birded the
riverside and found Yellow-headed Caracara, Great Black Hawk, Caqueta
Seedeater and some more. Here, a small boat was waiting for us. We crossed
the river in order to look for some localized birds on Napo’s islands. A
sandbank permitted us to see Collared Plover, White-winged and White-
banded Swallow, Drab Water Tyrant. On one of these little island we found
some rare birds like Castelnau’s Antshrike and White-browed Antbird, which
was even a lifer for Sandro! But quickly, the rain began to fall and we had to
return back to the lodge. The heavy rain lasted until the end of the afternoon
and we birded along the access road to the lodge. We saw some new birds
like: Solitary Cacique, Green and Olive Oropendola, Brownish Twistwing,
Striped Woodcreeper, White-lored Tyrannulet, etc.
14/07 (day 20) : Gareno – Cuenca
We woke up early to travell from the Gareno lodge to Cuenca. We drove all
the day (14 hours), doing some small stops here and there. We saw our last
22
amazonian birds like: Band-tailed Oropendola, Sulphury Flycatcher and
Orange-winged Parrot. Along the road in the highlands, we found an
Orange-breasted Falcon maybe two hours driving from Tena flying just over
our car. After this, we did a stop along a lake, where we heard Ecuadorian
Rails (which we coulnd’t see) and seeing many Silvery Grebes, Andean
Lapwings and Andean Ducks. Close to the road we also found a male
Cinereous Harrier. Before arriving at Cuenca, in the highlands, some Andean
Gulls where sitting along the road. We arrived in the evening and slept at
Cuenca in the city center.
15/07 (day 21): Cuenca – Cajas NP – Lojas
We met our local guide near our hostel and we began the climb to the Cajas
National Park. We first stopped at a spot for the endemic Violet-throated
Metaltail. After five minutes we found it. Then we went to higher elevations.
We stopped at the park reception and walked five minutes to reach a
Polylepis forest. Here we saw some highland specialities like Giant Conebill, Tit-
like Dacnis, many Blue-mantled Thornbill and more Violet-throated Metaltails.
We went down to the main lake where we saw Andean Coot, Andean Gull,
Rainbow Starfrontlet and a lost White-cheeked Pintail. We heard Rufous
Antpitta in the forest. After this, we drove the six hours to Lojas. We did a stop
at a special place (KM87) to find the local subspecies of Amazilia
Hummingbird (Loja Hummingbird). Gabriel started to feel bad and began to
have fever. We slept in Lojas.
Giant Conebill and Tit-like Dacnis, 15.07. Gabriel Marcacci
16/07 (day 22): Lojas – Tapichalaca – Vilcabamba
Today, we went early morning to Tapichalaca to see the unique Jocotoco
Antpitta even if Gabriel was still sick. We were accompagnied by a
Jocotoco’s fundation guide. Along the trail we saw Golden-crowned and
Blue-browed Tanager, Rufous Wren, Plushcap and finally, at the end of the
trail, we arrived to the Jocotoco Antpitta’s spot. We waited for 30 minutes
when two Jocotoco Antpittas got out of the forest to feed just in front of us.
23
After this, we continued to walk on the trail where we had White-throated
Quail-Dove, Bearded Guan, Greenish Puffleg, Silvery and Silver-backed
Tanager, Buff-breasted Mountain Tanager, Black-throated Tody-Tyrant, Slaty-
backed Chat-Tyrant, Flammulated Treehunter, Chestnut-naped and Slate-
crowned Antpitta, good views of Chusquea Tapaculo. The afternoon, we got
Amethyst-throated, Flame-throated and Little Sunangel at the hummingbirds
feeders. We went back to Vilcabamba for the night.
Jocotoco Antpitta, Tapichalaca, 16.07, Chris Venetz
17/07 (day 23) : Vilcabamba – Catamayo – Machala
We birded the first hour of the morning around Vilcabamba, finding White-
edged Oriole, Black-and-white Seedeater, many Saffron Finchs and our first
Long-tailed Mockingbird. We started to drive direction Jorupe near Peru’s
border, but arrived in Catamayo, the car broke down again, this time
definitively and we were stucked there. Instead of birding we decided to
have a cold beer to relax a bit. Daniel called a tow-truck and we decided to
head towards Machala, in order to rent a new car and to go towards the
Buenaventura reserve on the next day. The southernmost part of our trip was
not a success as we were not able to reach Jorupe, where we had already
booked the accomodations. Around Catamayo we did some birding just by
walking and had some new species like Croaking Ground Dove, Tumbes
Sparrow, Band-tailed Sierra Finch and Collared Antshrike. We spent the
evening in Machala, where we didn’t felt extremely safe, but it was the only
solution to continue our birding trip.
24
18/07 (day 24) : Machala – Buenaventura
We rented a new car in Machala and reached Buenaventura only in the
afternoon. On the road we saw our first Magnificient Frigatebird, a Pearl Kite,
West Peruvian Dove. A Grey-backed Hawk was perched just beside the
access road to the lodge, what a great view of this endangered and near
endemic species! Around the lodge we found many hummingbirds at the
feeders and other birds like Ochraceous Attila, Ecuadorian Trogon, Rufous-
headed Chachalaca, Gray-and-gold Warbler, Tawny-crowned Pygmy Tyrant,
Red-masked Parakeet, Northern Schiffornis. Then, a guide showed us the lek
of the Long-wattled Umbrellabird just next to lodge. What an amazing bird!
We had very good views of its awesome display. The Umbrellabird is one of
the major target of Jocotoco’s Buanaventura reserve. We just had the time to
walk along a trail before the night on which we saw a couple of Club-winged
Manakin doing their strange song with their wings. After dinner, a Black-and-
white Owl was hunting next to the open-air dining room (we saw it catching a
Green Honeycreeper). We slept at the lodge.
Long-wattled Umbrellabird, Buenaventura. 18.07. Gabriel Marcacci.
19/07 (day 25) : Buenaventura – Manglares Churute
In the morning, we looked for the two Ecuadorian endemics of Buenaventura.
A guide brought us to the best spot to see El Oro Parakeet and El Oro
Tapaculo. After one hour of waiting, we got the first one but heard nothing
about the Tapaculo. We also saw Crested Caracara, Red-masked Parakeet,
Blackish-headed Spinetail, Sooty-crowned Flycatcher etc. Afterward we left
Buenaventura and drove to the Manglares Churute reserve. Arrived in the
25
reserve, we directly found our target species: the impressive Horned
Screamer. In the paddy fields we saw Snail Kite, Limpkin, Black-necked Stilt,
Wattled Jacana, Kildeer, Roseate Spoonbill, American White Ibis and other
water species. Other birds seen: Savanna and Zone-tailed Hawk, Baird’s
Flycatcher, Amazilia Hummingbird, etc. We camped next to the information
centre of the reserve. During the night, a Pacific Pygmy Owl and a Striped
Owl were flying around our tents. We were also attacked by thousands of
mosquitoes.
20/07 (day 26): Manglares Churute – Cerro Blanco – Salinas
We left Manglares Churute in the morning, however we had the time to see
some new species like the Long-billed Starthroat, Saffron Siskin, White-tailed
Kite (very rare in this part of the country). On the road to Guayaquil, we
stopped at a lagoon next to the road : Black-bellied and Fulvous Whistling-
Ducks, Roseate Spoonbill, Anhinga and Chestnut-collared Swallow (on a
bridge over the Bulu Bulu river). We reached at the beginning of the
afternoon the Cerro Blanco reserve, where we birded for the next 3 hours. We
saw some tumbesian endemics like the White-tailed Jay and Pacific Parrotlet.
We saw some other birds: Crimson-breasted Finch, Black-capped Sparrow,
Streaked Saltator, Superciliated and Speckle-breasted Wrens a Crane Hawk
flying over the reserve, etc. We then moved towards Salinas. On the way we
saw a beautiful Pearl Kite perched beside the road. Arrived in Salinas, we saw
Pacific Ocean for the first time: Blue-footed Booby, South-American, Royal
and Elegant Tern, etc. We slept at a cheap hostel in Salinas.

26
21/07 (day 27) : Salinas – Ayampe
In the morning, we went to the Ecuasal salt ponds, a great seabirds spot. On
the beach we saw some Grey and Kelp Gulls and American Oystercatchers.
In the salinas, we saw many waders: Black-necked Stilt, Willet, least
Sandpiper, American Golden Plover, Wilson’s phalarope, Willet, Least, Western
and Semipalmated Sandpiper, Western Sandpiper, Ruddy Turnestone, Short-
billed Dowitcher, Snowy Plover, Kildeer, Royal and Elegant Terns, Peruvian
and Brown Pelicans everywhere. We also found a pair of Burrowing Owl and
a Peruvian Meadowlark. Then we moved towards Ayampe. As it was raining,
we made one hour of seawatch: hundred of Blue-footed boobies and
Peruvian Boobies, Parasitic Jaeger and 3 Inca Terns! Normally, Inca Terns
didn’t reach Ecuador, even during the austral winter, the strong El Nino
current of this year could be the reason of the appearance of many Inca
Terns and Peruvian Boobies. When the rain stopped, we walked along the
beach until a lagoon where we can watch : Mangrove Warbler, Magnificent
Frigatbird, Yellow-crowned Night-heron. We slept two nights at Ayampe
where it is an important place for the endemic Ensmeraldas Woodstar.
Burrowing Owl, Salinas, 21.07, Chris Venetz
22/07 (day 28) : Ayampe
We spent the morning on the trails with a guide looking for the endemic
Esmeraldas Woodstar but we didn’t find it. Apparently, during the austral
winter this endemic is not visible on its breeding grounds. Instead we saw
Watkins’ Antpittas, Little Cuckoo, Hook-billed Kite, Whooping Motmot, Tooth-
billed Tanager, Bran-colored Flycatcher, Black-tailed Myiobius, Black-
stripped Sparrow etc. The afternoon, we went to Puerto Lopez, a good
seawatch place. Here, someone offered us to do a 2 hours whale excursion
for 15 USD and we accepted it. From his little boat we saw many Humpback
Whale, Sooty Shearwater, Black Storm-Petrel, 30 Inca Terns, and a Red-billed
Tropicbird. A good last day

where we found Short-tailed Woodstar, Necklaced Spinetail and Short-tailed
Hawk. We drove during 8 hours direction Quito where we slept in Daniel’s
house. On the road, we had good views of Blackish Tapaculo.
