H.J. O’Connell Construction Limited (HJO), a division of Bird, provided excavation, backfill and concrete placement services for two buildings at Vale’s Long Harbour Processing Plant. Additional work at the site included a storage tank, and pipe and conveyor support foundations.

During initial excavation for the two main building foundations, unexpected poor soil conditions were encountered. HJO worked with the client to mobilize additional equipment and craft resources to remove the poor soil and replace it with suitable rock fill from an on-site quarry.

HJO’s ability to resolve the issue quickly by using on-site resources to expedite work on the remote site allowed the project to continue with little disruption to the schedule. At the conclusion of the project, over 95,000 cubic yards of soil was excavated and 84,000 cubic yards of backfill was placed and compacted.

COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTIONS

As a community minded company, Bird has contributed to over 60 charities within the past year. Our contributions have included almost $25,000 to Cancer Care Manitoba, $10,000 to the SickKids Hospital in Toronto and $7,500 to Halifax’s IWK Health Centre.

On the right, Christina Almeida, Corporate Facilities Coordinator, Vicky Milner, SickKids’ Development Coordinator, and Tanya Ziat, Human Resources Coordinator, from the Corporate Office presents SickKids with a cheque for $10,000. Below, the Bird Winnipeg District team before their nearly 13-mile walk for Cancer Care Manitoba’s Challenge for Life.

Bird has completed the construction of five new buildings to upgrade the Kingsgate border crossing operations. Challenged by the remote location and scarce labour market, Bird secured local materials and labour before drawing on its Calgary District resources to expedite this time-sensitive project.

To keep the border crossing operational during construction, Bird implemented phased construction to accommodate traffic flow. In addition, construction of two of the buildings were delayed for five months due to unforeseen property ownership. To complete the project on time, Bird shifted its focus to fast tracking the other three buildings.

The new border crossing, targeting LEED Silver certification, is expected to serve Kingsgate for the next 60 years.

The new Riverway Golf Clubhouse can accommodate up to 225 guests. The exterior elements of the clubhouse include a glass entrance canopy accented by exposed glulam columns and beams. Once inside, the interior banquet room is comprised of a 40-foot vaulted ceiling.

Prior to construction, Bird faced the challenge of coordinating the tight fit of the complex geothermal, mechanical and electrical systems beneath the building. The 24-inch diameter main heating duct that encompasses the entire underground building perimeter limited access for the installation of plumbing lines. Additionally, the high water table from the adjacent lake inhibited the commercial kitchen’s mechanical lines from being placed underground. To resolve these issues, Bird elevated the entire site plot by six inches with additional sand fill. To ensure the facility is not affected by the settlement of the surrounding sand, the clubhouse is situated on a raft slab with concrete beams.

Bird understands the importance of quickly resolving unforeseen issues to ensure construction schedules are met. Exceeding the client’s expectations, Bird successfully completed construction in time for the golfing season.

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS WITH

With its sole mission to manage the supply of blood and blood products to all Canadians, Canadian Blood Services was in need of a consolidated Atlantic production facility to enhance the safety and efficiency of its operations. Bird’s project included the construction of an office building equipped with laboratories and a warehouse facility.

The two-storey building envelope has a total of nine glazing types incorporated into the design of the curtain wall. The facility contains 15 controlled environmental rooms for blood storage and sufficient backup power capabilities to ensure the facility operates uninterrupted.

Due to the time-sensitive relocation process, the team worked quickly to resolve unforeseen additional rock excavation, material changes and performance upgrades totalling $800,000. Rather than extending the schedule, Bird worked diligently with the consultants, subcontractors and owner to expedite the changes and ensure the target completion date was met.

Over 10,500 cubic yards of concrete was placed for the general civil works package at the Kirby In-Situ Oilsands Project located in northern Alberta. Work included several tank ring beams, almost one mile of pre-cast spill containment walls, over 500 driven steel piles, three building foundations with pre-fabricated steel floor trenches cast into the concrete floor slabs and large equipment bases throughout the site.

Bird maintained safety, quality and productivity through the winter months by working in large heated enclosures to expedite the project. The largest of which was a 130 x 360 x 55 foot enclosure. In order to retain the heat, there was only one point of entrance. At peak times, Bird managed over 60 workers within these enclosures along with 60-ton cranes, 30-ton rock trucks and excavators, and a 130-foot concrete pump.

Daily coordination was paramount for the management team to control safety and operations on the site. Due to Bird’s commitment to safety, this project was delivered without a single loss time injury or medical aid occurrence.

The new Hyundai dealership in Saint John opened its doors to the public in early March – four weeks ahead of schedule. The Hyundai building design includes a spacious 20-foot-high showroom with floor-to-ceiling windows that allow daylight to flood inside.

Construction work began late summer 2011 with the site requiring a large amount of fill for the parking lot and a 25-foot-high retaining wall. Bird imported and placed over 13,000 cubic yards of fill. Subsequently, the team was required to finish the asphalt parking lot prior to the asphalt plant’s seasonal closure in December.

With the earthworks complete and the site paved, the next challenge was to complete the building through the Maritime winter. This required high performance without exceeding the tight budget. Due to detailed project coordination, look-ahead schedules and excellent teamwork, Bird successfully completed the facility for the owner earlier than planned.

The new high voltage test facility for Manitoba Hydro is one of only three high voltage test facilities in Canada capable of assessing 550-kilovolt alternating and 500-kilowatt direct current equipment. Bird’s scope of work included an eight-storey clear-span test hall attached to a two-storey office and warehouse.

Among the special features of this project is an extensive grounding system that is incorporated into the entire test hall structure. Almost 17,000 pounds of copper mesh is cast within the structural slab. In order to prevent the entry or escape of an electromagnetic field, the mesh is connected to the metal cladding and foundation rebar directing the path of grounding through the driven precast piles. Our team’s accuracy and attention to detail was paramount to the success of the grounding system. If uncontained, a magnetic pulse used to test a large transformer could be released into the environment disrupting communication devices and air travel. Bird’s commitment to quality assurance and control has ensured that all tests performed within this facility can be executed safely.

As the inaugural building for the Mississauga campus of Sheridan College, the new Hazel McCallion Campus establishes a cornerstone for the future campus. The project was constructed in time to prepare for the 2011 fall semester and to qualify for full funding under the federal government’s Infrastructure Stimulus Fund. Aware of the difficult and tight timelines, the Bird team confidently accepted the challenge.

The team’s flexibility and ability to exceed expectations enabled a phased, fast track schedule for the campus building. Bird tackled multiple sections of the building in phases so floors could be occupied by the client once completed. The crew increased their work schedule, working six and half days per week, to ensure the project’s completion.

The new campus is leading edge in its design, incorporating unitized curtain wall and containing many sustainable design elements. Targeting LEED® Gold certification, features include a solar power-generated domestic water system and room occupancy sensors that automatically control lighting.
