Term 3 Week 8 6th September 2017

Principal Peer Support This week the focus is on step 2 of the model, Plan. In Peer Support children learn the need to develop a range of coping strategies and be creative in drawing on these when planning responses. Responses include persevering, seeing the positive side to situations and engaging in activities they enjoy as a distraction for a short time. Encourage your child to talk with you about strategies they could use as difficulties arise.

Congratulations to the Stage 2 Cockatoos who received the Principal’s Award for Excellence in Learning, during this week’s assembly their outstanding questioning skills. During Science Week the Cockatoos participated in a "Wake Up To Astronomy" live streaming session run by CAASTRO. They submitted questions along with other Year 4, 5 and 6 students participating across the country and Arjuna won "best question" and received an astronomy goodie pack from CAASTRO. Cormac's question was also answered during the session. The whole class also received astronomy related resources and activities for our classroom. They were very excited and got a lot out of their interactive virtual excursion.

This week we are celebrating SASS Recognition Week, where we acknowledge all the great work our school support staff do to help the children, parents and staff. So thank you to these amazing people: Mel, Karen, Raylene & Angela (office), Amanda, Angela, Suzie (learning support officers), John (GA) and Karen (canteen). We appreciate all the things you do for us and all the effort you put in to your work.

Term 3 Week 8 6th September 2017

It was a timely reminder for our students, teachers and importantly parents to monitor and talk to the children about what they are doing on their devices. It’s also a timely reminder for parents to update their “nanny” software on devices. I have included the Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner ‘s age guide to social media below to help out any parents who are unsure what the recommended ages are. It’s important for parents to note the eSafety Commissioner’s recommendations are different to the App Store and Google Play ratings.

Thank you to all the parent’s who patiently dodged the playground works in the P to 2 playground. The fences are down and the work’s are finished. A huge thank you goes to all our families who have supported the PC, who paid for these works. It is an amazing, playing, learning and chilling place!

Hope your all enjoying the spring weather, Tracy Gray

It was great to have some preschool students visit me today to show me their prestigious writing efforts. It’s always great to celebrate our out of school achievements. Congratulations to Angela in the preschool who was football manager of the year! This was her first ever sport award!

Our local youth liason officer, Senior Constable John Brettle came and spoke to us about stranger danger. It was very informative and the children asked lots of good questions. There was an issues that came up widely across many of the students that as a parent you need to be aware of. Many of our students are on social media before they should be. Most social media is recommended for over 13 years of age. Many stage 2 & 3 students in particular reported they upload video’s to you tube. When Constable Brettle asked for a show of hands if you put up footage with your school uniform on… there were a lot of hands for up saying they did. Constable Brettle explained to the children this meant “strangers” would know where to look for them.

Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner - Is there an age limit for kids on social media? Most social media services and apps require users to be 13 years old to join. Why 13? This is usually to comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 What about APPS? App stores set their own age ratings based on the app’s content.

MUSIC NIGHT The hall was filled with the wonderful sounds of ALL of our Birchgrove ensembles last night. Congratulations to all of the children for their hard work and superb performances. It is undoubtedly one of my proudest nights of the year when we have a chance to experience the breadth and depth of music program. Special thanks to all of the teachers who supervised the rooms and helped to make the night run so smoothly. The parent co-ordinators for the ongoing management of your ensembles. To Emel for co-ordinating the food stalls (on her birthday!) and the army of interval helpers. Lisa and Dianne (stage management) and Lilly Copping for sound. To Tracy Gray and Rob Cormack for their help and support and finally to the Year 6 children who very capably hosted the evening. DATES FOR THE DIARY Music Committee Meeting : Tuesday 12th September Staff Room 7pm Music Camp : 12 -13 October, Thursday and Friday

We are excited to be taking part in the 2017 Woolworths Earn & Learn program. During the previous campaign, we were able to purchase some great resources with the points we earned, thanks to you. From now until September 19th 2017, you can collect stickers at Woolworths that go towards Earn & Learn points and deliver them to school or drop them in our box at Woolworths. Hint: ask your family and friends to collect or ask the person in the line before or after you if they are collecting tickets!
