Why did this happen?

Bay Area has been a leader in the industry for over 25 years.

Local media such as the San Jose Mercury (December 4, 2002) point to the industry’s desperate need for a well educated workforce and mention in particular the need to draw more minority students into the sciences.

Skyline College and Carlmont High School sponsored a BIO-Bus Tour of the South San Francisco Biotechnology Industry.

Twenty-seven Carlmont Students, toured a circular route through the area with stops at Genentech and Cell Genesys for on-site tours.

The tour ended at Skyline College with activities in the new Science Facilities and lunch in the new Student and Community Center.

Skyline faculty led experiments to provide the students with experiential learning in biotechnology.

• Students conduct research and invest $1,000 in a minimum of two Biotechnology companies.

• Weekly, students check progress of stock.

• Students may sell and buy new stock after 60 days.

• Final project is a PowerPoint presentation to the class explaining:

1. Stocks Price Per Share as it changed over time.

2. Stocks Total Value Per Share over time.

3. Reasons for fluctuation in the stocks.

•Students use existing scientific knowledge to design an experiment that tests for the presence of protease in unknown samples.

•Formal lab write-up.

•Story board (including camera angles, camera person, narrator, actors, etc.).

•Procedures are filmed in iMovie. Each group of 4 students gets 1 digital camera and 1 iBook.

•Final experiment is presented in PowerPoint with iMovies converted to QuickTime.

Page 29: Biotechnology In Every School

You know how protease works. It breaks down proteins. You are going to plan an awesome experiment. With this experiment, you will make millions of dollars.

To protect your money, you need to patent your experiment with the government. However, the government is only accepting experiments that show procedures in movie form.

Page 30: Biotechnology In Every School

Objective: (for your group of 4) To design an assay (test) for the presence of protease (protein-digesting enzymes)

Materials: Protease (Adolf’s Meat Tenderizer) and 3 unknown samples. Any other chemicals from the lab or grocery store. Include glassware. You list your own materials in this section.Procedures: You design a valid, controlled experiment to test for protease in unknown samples. Make sure your experiment has:

1. Positive and Negative Controls

2. Multiple replications

3. Everything the same in each trial except the variable being tested.

4. “reasonable” volumes and concentrations

5. MEASURABLE DATA

Page 31: Biotechnology In Every School

•Students work in groups of 4 and choose a scientific concept.

•Students must review concepts to be taught and write-out a script (Step-by-Step Procedures).

•Students similarly storyboard project (camera angles, etc.)

•Students turn in a QuickTime movie for peer review.

•Fellow students watch one another’s videos and check for scientific inaccuracies.

•Groups re-film and re-edit to make a final movie.

Page 33: Biotechnology In Every School

• Working solo and acting as a sales and marketing specialist, a student chooses a biotechnology product they are interested in.

• Research is conducted, a letter is sent to the company requesting an annual report, and an expert is encouraged to be found on that specific product (contact company, etc.)

• Students are to become an expert on his/her product and turn in a final PowerPoint presentation to the class.

• Examples are Roundup Ready Soybeans, Nerve Growth Factors, Pulmozyme, ABD #3948 DNA Synthesizer, etc.
