    Olfaction

    Nose

    Sense of smell

Occurs in response to airborne molecules calledodorants

    Consists of Olfactory Neurons

    Olfactory Neurons

Bipolar neurons within the Olfactory Epithelium

Dendrites of the Olfactory Neurons extends to theepithelial surface and the ends are modied with lonthat lie in a thin mucuslm

    Odorants

a substance giving o a smell especially one used to giveparticular scent or odour to a product

Airborne Odorants become dissolved in the mucus onsurface of the epithelium and bind to receptor molecules

membranes of the speciali!ed cilia "he binding of the odorant to the receptor initiates action

potentials which are then conducted to the olfactory cortthe Cerebrum by sensory neurons

"here are at least #$$ Olfactory receptors in human%

    "aste buds

)re sensory structures that detect taste stimuli

Oval shaped structures located in the surface of thetongue%

Can also be found in the di% areas of the mouth and

    pharynx

Consists of * types of cells Speciali&ed Epithelia'ells +,xterior supporting capsule of each taste buTaste cells +.nterior supporting capsule-

    Contains hair li/e processes called 0taste hairs1

"aste hairs extend into a tiny opening in the surrounstratied epithelium called a 0taste pore1
