BIONICS

Bionics in the current scenario has made it possible for many people to have several implants in their bodies powered by electronic motors.

Rebuilding the Body with Bionics

HUMAN BODY:- Amazing combination of muscles, sensory organs, neural networks.

BIONICS:-To restore or reconstruct a damaged human body.

TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES:-In the field of medical and electronics.

Worried about your body parts running down?

Concerned about growing old? What do you know about bionics? What can we expect and what can

we imagine?

ARTIFICIAL MUSCLES

Generating new muscle cells

Using Electro Active Polymers

• These are artificial muscles.

• Used by researchers to assist humans to overcome deformities.

• Respond exactly like our normal muscles.

ARTIFICIAL HEARTS

Heart Engine of the body pumping blood to various

organs.

Artificial heart developed in 1950

……….pacemakers introduced

Page 13: BIONICS.ppt [Recovered]

PACEMAKERS:

• It is a small, battery operated device, miniature electrical generator that helps the heart beat to regulate rhythm.

• It consists of battery that remains for number of years and a computer circuit encased in plastic.

• They can replace defective natural pacemakers and

blocked pathway.

Page 14: BIONICS.ppt [Recovered]

HOW IT WORKS?

Generates tiny impulses to the heart and regulates rhythm of the heart beat while a doctor controls the software.

• A pacemaker uses batteries to send electrical impulses to the heart to help it pump properly. An electrode is placed next to the heart wall and small electrical charges travel through the wire to the heart.

• They have a sensing device. It turns the signal off when the heartbeat is above a certain level. It turns the signal back on when the heartbeat is too slow.

BIONIC EYES

Human eye:• That enables sight.• Made up of millions of rods and cones.• Converts light energy into electrical impulses.• Travel along the optic nerve to the brain where

images are formed.

Page 17: BIONICS.ppt [Recovered]

Bionic ears

Human ear:

• Numerable cells that enable hearing.• The sound output reach from auditory nerves to

the brain.

Page 18: BIONICS.ppt [Recovered]

BIONIC NEURONS(BIONS)

• Bring back life • paralyzed muscles.

• It is injected into the human body.

• Power source is provided.

• Radio waves enabled by a small external controller.

• They deliver electrical stimulation to muscles

BRAIN MACHINEControls thoughts and actions.

CYBERKINETICS:

• Neural interface system.• Consist of tiny chip.• Embedded inside the brain of the patient.

Page 21: BIONICS.ppt [Recovered]

What it does?• It processes the

thought commands on to a computer screen by which the patient would be able to move the cursor on screen, send e-mails,and play games-all just by thinking.

Defense advanced research projects agency:

Carried out an experiment where electrodes were connected to the brains of monkeys and using their brain waves, the monkeys operated a robotic arm.

Page 23: BIONICS.ppt [Recovered]

•Brain machine interface:

One day fighter pilots might be able to operate certain controls just by thinking.

•Sensory perceptions:

a) Bionic eyes: to restore the sight to many blind people around the world

b)Bionic ears:(cochlear implants)hair cells that enable hearing

HUMAN ASSISTANCE• A boon to people

suffering from spinal cord and other injuries.

• Bionic suit equipped with an on-board computer.

• This suit uses sensors attached to the muscles and transmits signals to the on-board computer database.

• Helps a person to stand,walk,climb etc.

Page 25: BIONICS.ppt [Recovered]

Researchers Conclusion

• This technique when applied to humans would help people with damaged nerves to breathe easily.

• Human muscles would be powered by blood glucose from our own body itself.

CONCLUSION

In the quest for perfection, man is trying his best to develop biological systems with engineering precision, and somewhere in the near future we could have a truly bionic (artificial) man. The good thing is that this could help the disabled and the ailing in a great way.
