ABSTRACT:• BIO- is the word which shows the

living system.• Biotechnology is one of the fast

growing area of scientific research.• It done wonders in helping the

mankind.• Bionic eye is the visual prosthesis-

restore the functional vision, for both partial and total blindness.• Its just by placing the chip in the

retinal portion of the eye.

CAUSE FOR BLINDNESS:• Macular degeneration.• Born blind.• Retinitis pigmentosa.• Due to diabetics. Blindness caused due to the above disorder can be rectified with the help of bionic eye.

COMPONENTS IN BIONIC EYE:

Bionic eye consists of • Image sensors.• Processors.• Receivers.• Radio transmitters.• Retinal chips.• VPU

CHIP:• Retinal chip: It is the chip

placed at the sub retinal portion in which the electrical signal of the image is processed and viewed.

IMPLANTATION:• It is the simple surgical process named

visual prosthesis.• Prosthesis- implantation with the artificial

organ.• Three tiny incisions no more than the

diameter of the needle in the white part of the eye.

• The portions (gel) in the middle eye is removed and replace with saline.

• Made a pinpoint opening in the retina to fit the ASR at the sub-retinal portion of the retina.

• ASR- Artificial Silicon Retina a replacement for the damaged retina.

ASR & ITS WORKING:• It is the microchip of about 2mm in

diameter silicon chip.• Consists ~5000 microscopic solar

cells called “microphotodiode”.• Has their own stimulating electrode.• It detects the light signal of image

convert it to electrical impulse which in turn stimulate the ganglion cells.

• The information sent to the brain via the optic nerve.

ADVANTAGES:

• Power requirement is ¼ milliwatt.

• There is no necessity to suffer from long and short sights.

• Reduction in stress upon retina.• No batteries implanted within

body.• No complicated surgical

procedure.

Page 14: Bionic eye an artificial eye for the blind 1

DISADVANTAGES:• There are 120 million rods and 6

million cones in the retina of every healthy human eye.

• Risky task.• Si is toxic to the human body and

reacts unfavourably with fluids in the eye

• It cost about 30,000$ (22.7 LAKHS and above).

Page 15: Bionic eye an artificial eye for the blind 1

CONCLUSION:• About 15 million across 35 million in the

world are blind.• Almost in India it stands for about 35%.• Reduction of sight for blind is no more a

dream for people.• Bionic eye is the breakthrough in the

world for blind people.

IN FUTURE?

• From the success of pacemaker and artificial hearing aid with the development of VLSI, embedded system, micro designing; bionic eye is the most saluting invention.

• As soon as in future we can expertise the bionic man with the replacement for all the organs…
