IntroductionThe most efficient way of gettingheating equipment to run on low tozero carbon fuel (woodchip & pellet). When heat is required on demand, the Broag-Gilles modulating fullycontrollable automatic Biomassboilers are the solution.
The boilers have an increased servicelife because of their modulatingoutputs which range from 12.5kW-2000kW (output up to 5000kWavailable subject to projectcircumstances-Contact Broag Ltd).
Fuel choicesThis guide is to help the designer decide which wood fuel tochoose and assumes that the choice to burn wood chips or pelletsas a fuel has been made and that the different characteristics ofthe fuel need to be considered before making a final decision.
Wood pellets vs wood chips- Pellets flow freely whereas chips do not- chips can require
some manual labour input once or twice a year
- Pellets are a more dense form of fuel than chips therefore takeless storage space per kw/hr
- Pellets are more expensive per kw/hr than chips
- Chips are more environmentally friendly than pellets as theytake less energy to create
- A wood chip boiler can burn pellets whereas a pellet boilercan’t burn chips

Climate changeGlobal climate change is the most pressing environmental challengeof our time and one of the major causes of climate change isemissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) from burning fossil fuels. One ofthe most important environmental benefits of using sustainablyproduced wood for energy in place of fossil fuels is its positive impactin moderating long-term global climate change.
Fossil fuel combustion takes carbon that was locked awayunderground (as crude oil, gas, or coal) millions of years ago andtransfers that carbon to the atmosphere as new CO2. When wood isburned, on the other hand, it recycles carbon that was already in thenatural carbon cycle, which is recaptured through sustainable forestgrowth. Consequently, the net long-term effect of burning wood fuelis that considerably less new CO2 is added to the atmosphere, as longas the sources from which the wood came are sustainably managed.
Since wood burning uses a LZC fuel source and burning fossil fuelscauses climate change, when wood replaces fossil fuelled heating thenet impact should be that, over the long term, CO2 levels in theatmosphere are reduced. If a fossil fuelled heating system is convertedto wood, net CO2 emissions for heating are reduced. For this reasonwe believe, heating with wood is one of the most powerful tools foran institution or community interested in meaningfully addressingclimate change and renewable energy through its own energy use.

Wood fuel storageConsideration now needs to be given to the type of fuel store suitable for the different fuels as eachhas a different requirement. There is however one overriding consideration to bear in mind for bothfuels: it is easier to move the heating system water than wood fuel, so try and keep the fuel storeas close to the wood boiler as possible, the simpler the fuel route the better!!
Wood pellet storageAs mentioned earlier pellets will free flow so they can be kept in a fuel store with a sloping floor toa central feed auger as shown below (A) - ideal slope 35 degrees or more.
A B
C D
The fuel can then be moved using augers (worm screws) to the boiler (B).
Or feed another auger to take the fuel further using extra augers (C).
Pellets can also be stored in a silo similar to the one shown (D).
Broag are able to put the customer in contact with suppliers of siloswhich can be delivered to site and bolted down to a pre-prepared base, the dimensions of which they will supply.
In brief summaryIt can be seen that wood chips are more environmentally friendly but take up more storage space.
At the time of writing (Summer 2008) chips are about 60% of the cost per kw/hr of Natural Gas andpellets are about the same as Natural Gas, therefore chips do have the possibility of giving a paybackas well. Pellets are about 50% the cost of Gas Oil per kw/hr.
But if fuel storage space, on site labour or a local supply of chips are unavailable, it is evident thatpellets will give a significant carbon reduction over traditional heating fuels.

Gathers and delivers wood chips from store
As mentioned earlier, chips don’t free flow so are not suitable for the sort of storage used forpellets. To move chips from the store to the transport system, a Sweep Auger needs to be used- see below.
Wood chips storage
In operation the auger, which is driven by an electric motor, transfers its drive into a gearboxunderneath the circular disc which then makes the arms rotate and drag the fuel to the auger. Thefuel is then transported to the boiler via the auger(s) like wood pellets.
Choose the largest diameter sweep collector that will fit between the fuel store walls to minimisefuel left around the edge.
Sweep collector operation undermines fuel causing it to fall inwards and then be fed into the feedauger – 1 motor drives sweep collector and feed auger.
The wood chip store should be as square as possible to minimise fuel left in the corners.
Above: As mentioned in ‘Fuel Choices’wood chip stoking equipment is morerobust than pellet equipment- here wehave fully welded auger flights on a solid50mm shaft.
Left: Circular flat bottomed bins similar tothese also suit sweep augers.

This high-performance boiler is produced as a tension-free welded construction. The heat insulateddoor at the front swings out completely permitting free access for cleaning all the boiler flues. It isconstructed in accordance with the natural combustion process of the wood fuel. The combustionchamber is lined with ceramic (replaceable) radiant fire bricks.
The high combustion temperatures and the length of time the gases persist in the furnaceguarantee clean combustion.
The boiler is suitable for automatic combustion of both wood chips and pellets. Also, thanks to anadditional combustion chamber opening and grate, pieces of wood may be used in case ofemergency operation, without the necessity of any adjustments to construction.

Calculation is dependent upon a number of factors:
- What output is the biomass boiler in kw?
- How many hours a week will it be in operation?
- Which type of fuel – chips or pellets?
- How often is it desirable to have fuel deliveries?
- What capacity is the delivery lorry?
For exampleA 145kw boiler in a primary school working say 6hrs a day at full output burning wood chips willburn the following amount of fuel per week
145kw x 6hrs per day x 5 days per week = 4350 kw/hrs per week
4350 divided by 800 (the amount of kw/hrs per m3 of chips) = 5.43m3 per week.
Most fuel delivery lorries carry about 30m3 of fuel so in this instance if a 36/38m3 store could becreated a delivery would be needed about every 6 weeks without the store needing to be fullyempty to receive a full load.
A suitable store would be about 3.5m x 3.5m x 3m deep.
Another exampleA 100kw boiler in a sports centre working say 12hrs a day at full output burning pellets will burnthe following amount of fuel per week
100kw x 12hrs per day x 7 days per week = 8400kw/hrs per week
8400 divided by 3000 (the amount of kw/hrs per m3 of pellets) = 2.8m3 per week
That would be a full lorry load approx every 10 weeks or a half load every month or so.
What capacity does the fuel store need to be?

Uniquely, the Broag-Gilles biomass boiler has the combustion process under full control - please asklocal Broag Area Sales Manager for full explanation if required, contact details onwww.uk.remeha.com. This means that a buffer vessel doesn’t need to be fitted if the boiler is pipedinto a low loss header as shown below.
Typical Broag-Gilles biomass schematic showing option of extra boilers if required. Biomass boilerpump and divert valve supplied as standard- up to 160 kW, position of 3 port valve varies dependingupon boiler output (isolation valves etc omitted for clarity). The diagram above shows that thebiomass boiler can be piped up like any other boiler and also in conjunction with any other boiler. The 3 port mixing valve and boiler pump are supplied with the boiler(up to 160kW) and aredesigned to get the nominal flow through the boiler and keep the return temperature up to 55-60deg C. They are controlled by the boiler so require no extra electrical supply.
When would a buffer vessel be desirable?A buffer vessel can be used for 3 main reasons:
- If ‘instant’ heat is required at any time e.g. in a greenhouse that has to be kept warmimmediately once the inside set temperature falls in the evening.
- A buffer vessel can be used to effectively increase the size of a boiler by letting it create andstore heat overnight ready for the cold morning start - this applies to all boilers not just biomass.
- If the boiler is connected only to a Plate Heat Exchanger/s and there is a possibility of the demandfor heat being taken away without any overrun e.g. only looking after air handling units whichmay all switch off at the same time once a set outside temperature is reached or similar situation.
Any other hydraulic considerations? No, this is the main benefit the Broag-Gilles boiler has over its competitors, treat it as if is a normalboiler with pump overrun at the end of the heating day and it will operate correctly. It is bestoperated on a pressurized system which should be connected as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
Piping a biomass boiler up to a heating system
Water treatment
24
It is generally considered good practice to treatthe system water. The biomass boilers have asteel heat exchanger so a suitable inhibitorshould be used for steel and all other metals inthe heating system.
Combustion air requirementsThe combustion air requirement for the biomassboilers is as follows:
- Kw output of the boiler(s) x 3.222 + 80cm/2
- For example a 145 kW boiler wouldneed 547cm/2 of free area air inlet
- A 100 kW and 45 kW together in the sameboiler house would also need 547cm/2
Any conventionally flued appliances e.g. pressurejet, water heater, atmospheric or conventionallyflued Quinta/210 etc will need their combustionair in addition to the above in accordance withstandard BS6644 calculation.
Flueing requirementsReference should be made BS 6644 & the cleanAir Act.
Only clean wood fuel may be used & cangenerally be regarded as a Very Low Sulphur(VLS) fuel.
- The boilers must have their own flue, theycannot share with other boilers, waterheaters or biomass boilers.
- The flue gas temperature is between 130deg C and 200 deg C, the flue fans havequite high residual duty so this should beborne in mind when choosing a flue.
- Consideration should be given to smokecontrol areas - currently all boilers up to300 kW are ‘Exempt Appliances’ for S.C.areas. In Autumn 2008, 360-1600 kW will beexempt. It is anticipated that in Spring 2009the 2000 kW boiler will also be exempt.Boilers operating in these zones must burnfuel derived from clean wood containing nohalogenated compounds.
- The services of a specialist flue companyshould be considered for final flue design, which should include clean out hatches.
Flueing environmental issuesAll combustion causes pollution. When selectingyour fuel you are also inevitably selecting thepollution that comes as a consequence of that
decision. All Broag-Gilles boilers when correctlyinstalled are certified by AEA Technology* assuitable for use in Smokeless Zones and meetwith all UK regulatory standards. All equipmentcertification is given based on the use of cleanfuel. Clean fuel is essential otherwise you maybe in breach of emission regulations andcause harm.
Other air pollutants of concern, but by nomeans exclusive to biomass combustion include:
PM10 Particles - Broag-Gilles fullyautomated boilers are class leaders withlow PM10 emissions.
PM10 Levels will vary significantly with fuelquality. Pellets produce less PM10 than chipsand may be a more suitable fuel choice for builtup areas. PM10 emissions are of less concern inrural and suburban areas where existing PM10levels are likely to be low
Sulfur Oxides (SOx) cause acid rain. Modernwood systems have 1/6 the SO2 emissions offuel oil.
Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) produced by allcombustion processes cause ozone, smog, acidrain and respiratory problems.
Carbon Monoxide (CO) is produced by all fuelcombustion processes. The level produced bywood combustion depends very much on howwell the system is set up and maintained.CO emissions from wood burning are ofrelatively minor concern to air quality, except insome areas that already have high levels of COin the air from traffic exhaust.
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are a largefamily of air pollutants, some of which areproduced by fuel combustion. Some are toxic, others are carcinogenic. VOCs elevate ozone andsmog levels in the lower atmosphere, causingrespiratory problems. Both wood and oilcombustion produce VOCs—wood is higher insome compounds and oil is higher in others.VOC emissions can be minimized with goodcombustion practices.
Most of these issues are relevant to allcombustion processes not solely wood biomassand can be resolved by ensuring the correctchimney height. As with all installations, reference to the Clean Air Act and BS6644 isrecommended. AEA Technology* can carry outan on-site environmental impact study to fullyasses all of the air quality issues surrounding aninstallation if the client feels this is necessary.

This high-performance boiler is produced as a tension-free welded construction. The heat insulateddoor at the front swings out completely permitting free access for cleaning all the boiler flues.
It is constructed to optimise the natural combustion process of wood fuel. The gasificationcombustion chamber, built on the direct-electrical principle, is lined with a ceramic variable(replaceable) radiant ceiling. The high combustion temperatures and the length of time the gasespersist in the furnace guarantee clean combustion.

The data in the following table should be observed when considering the push rods dischargesystem: static calculation was made for wood chips of size G 50 and W 50, the maximumapparent density of 440 kg/m3.
Walking floor system 180 – 2000 kW
The permissible width of the push rods depends on the required length and intended delivery height.
Example:Intended bunker length is 10.0 m, intended delivery height is 4.0 m.Push rod may be used within 2.0 m at maximum. In order to avoid the over bridging, the distancebetween push rods or wall should be 10cm - 15cm at maximum.

*The minimum distance for opening the heat exchanger door is equivalent to the width of the boiler, but
**for maintenance reasons we recommend a clear space, equivalent to the length of the heatexchanger, is left in front of the boiler - outward opening plant room doors in front of boiler canhelp achieve space required.
