BIOLOGYUnit 2 Cells and Transport

OCTOBER 15, 2015

• List as many things as you can think of that contain the word cell in their name. What do many, if not all, of these things have in common?

OCTOBER 16, 2015

• What are the 3 components of the cell theory?

OCTOBER 17, 2015

• Explain the advantages of a large surface area for a cell.

• Explain the disadvantages of a large volume for a cell.

OCTOBER 19, 2015

• Why is it beneficial for a cell to be smaller?

TEST CORRECTIONS

• List the number of the question that you got wrong and rewrite the question itself.

• Write the correct answer.

• Explain why that answer is correct.

• Explanations must be at least 3-4 sentences.

OCTOBER 20, 2015

• Is a larger surface area-to-volume ratio ideal or a smaller surface area-to-volume ratio? Explain your answer.

OCTOBER 21, 2015

• What does structure mean? What does function mean?

• How are structure and function related? Provide an example.

• Structure: refers to an object’s shape

• Function: refers to the job or task that the object performs

• An objects structure determines its function.

• Examples:

1. plane ➡ wings allow for movement

2. mail sorter ➡ more arms allows them to sort the mail more quickly

3. nerve cell ➡ transmits electric signals to target location, which produces a response

OCTOBER 22, 2015

• What are 4 things that all cell’s have in common?

• Hint: You may remember this from middle school, but if not look at the images on the wall. What do all of the images have in common?

4 COMPONENTS OF ALL CELLS

• DNA or Genetic Material

• Ribosomes

• Cytoplasm

• Cell Membrane

OCTOBER 23, 2015

• What is one key difference between prokaryotes and eukaryotes?

• After answering the warm-up question, please get out yesterday’s POGIL.

OCTOBER 26, 2015

• How do you prepare a wet mount?

OCTOBER 27, 2015

• What frustrated you the most about yesterday’s lab?

• What areas do you feel you need improvement on while working with microscopes?

CELL MEMBRANE

• also referred to as the plasma membrane

• surrounds and protects animal cells, i.e. the outermost layer of an animal cell

• determines what substances enter and leave the cell

CELL WALL

• surrounds and protects plant cells, i.e. the outermost layer of a plant cell

• provides structural support

CHLOROPLAST

• the site of photosynthesis

• only found in plant cells and algae

CYTOPLASM

• the region of the cell within the membrane that includes the fluid, the cytoskeleton, and all of the organelles except the nucleus

GOLGI APPARATUS

• a cell organelle that helps make and package materials to be transported out of the cell

• completes proteins and delivers them to the cell membrane

MITOCHONDRIA

• site of cellular respiration

• produces ATP

NUCLEUS

• contains DNA

• controls all cellular processes

RIBOSOME

• site of protein synthesis

VACUOLE

• stores water and dissolved minerals

• very large in plant cells

ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM

• a system of membranes that is found in a cell's cytoplasm and that assists in the production, processing, and transport of proteins and in the production of lipids
