What You’ll Learn with Mrs. Heupel
The Study of Life
Biochemistry -We’ll study basic chemistry & the organic compounds found in all living organisms. We’ll also build & identify organic compounds by their structure and function.
Cell Structures & Functions - The organelles of plant, animal, viral, and bacterial cells will be studied to find out what they look like and what they do. We’ll experiment with cell membranes & model their functions in lab.
Cellular Reproduction - We’ll study how different types of cells replicate & what happens when those processes go wrong.
Genetics & Molecular Biology- We’ll study DNA, how it replicates & is used in the production of proteins in your body. We’ll also study mutations, inheritance patterns, & recent advancements in biotechnology.
Body Systems - We’ll learn about the organs of 4 of the body’s systems their function, and connectedness. We’ll study them in greater detail by dissecting a fetal pig.
Data Analysis - Throughout every chapter we’ll perform labs to find the answers to specific questions & create tables & graphs to help us analyze our data. Data analysis includes interpreting trends, predicting results in future experiments, identifying independent, dependent & controlled variables and more.

Communication with your Instructor
🏫Our Biology class will incorporate a blended learning format, meaning some of your assignments will be on paper & some of them will be turned in digitally with Google
Classroom. Sometimes you’ll get information by reading & taking notes, other times there will be teacher lead instruction, or video lectures. Activities & labs will be used to reinforce & apply Biology concepts. Most make up work can be done through Google Classroom. If you cannot attend school, check Google Classroom for your assignments & materials. When
you turn in an assignment using GC, you’ll receive comments and scores there as well. Don’t forget to check the Private Comments section under your Google Classroom assignments for
individual comments. Last, but not least, remember to regularly ✅your school gmail account for messages from you instructor.
Personal devices 📱 will be allowed in our classroom for use in labs,
activities, and accessing instructional content. For Example: for some labs
you’ll need a calculator, a timer, stopwatch, or camera. If you don’t have a phone with these features,
don’t worry, there’ll be other options.
Late 🕗 work will be accepted
until the end of each unit. Contact your
instructor if you need more 🕒 or more
support.

WIN TIME REFERAL
Online & In Class Instruction
The blended learning format we’ll be using will facilitate both in class and online instruction. Some of the assignments given may not be exactly the same based on my ability
to modify the assignment or lab. However, the intent or standard that assignments are developed for will be aligned.
If you are an online student, you may be asked to participate in lab by watching a video of the lab procedures, or recording data collected by your lab partners who are performing the
lab. Online students will still be involved in the data analysis and reasoning skills assessments associated with the labs.
If you normally attend school, but for some
reason cannot, check Google Classroom for your assignments &
materials and join the Google Meet at the time
our class normally meets.
Online StudentsShower & get dressed for
school. Eat breakfast & find a workplace so you can join our
class each day by using the Google Meet Link “heupel”.
You’ll find your tasks & assignments listed in
Google Classroom.
In Class StudentsWear your masks & sit at your
assigned seat each day. 😷
I invite you to wash your hands as your arrive &
leave my class each day.

Content StandardsIf you do not reach
proficiency on a priority standard & still need support
on that standard after the unit assessment, more
support will be provided by your instructor during
WIN TIME.
