EXCRETORY

SYSTEM

The excretory system is a passive biological system that removes excess, unnecessary materials from an organism, so as to help maintain homeostasis within the organism and prevent damage to the body. It is responsible for the elimination of the waste products of metabolism as well as other liquid and gaseous wastes, as urine and as a component of sweat and exhalation. As most healthy functioning organs produce metabolic and other wastes, the entire organism depends on the function of the system; however, only the organs specifically for the excretion process are considered a part of the excretory system.

1. KidneysThe bean-shaped organs found just above the waistline

Renal FasciaThis is the thin fibrous layer, which anchors the kidney to the

surrounding structures to maintain the normal position of the organ.

PARTS OF EXCRETORY SYSTEM :-

The work of the kidney is to separate urine from the blood which flows through it.

Kidney plays a role in regulating the composition of the plasma by extracting excess wastes and other substances into the urine.

Each kidney receives the renal artery directly from the dorsal aorta and are drained by the renal veins which pass to the postcaval vein.

THE WORK OF KIDNEYS

•UretersThese are two tubes which function to convey urine from the kidneys to the bladder. Passes from the pelvis to the posterior aspect of the urinary bladder Peristalsis begins at the renal pelvis and ending at the bladder.

•Urinary Bladder•This sac lies posterior to the pubis. •Separated from the rectum by the seminal vesicles in the male and by the vagina and uterus in the female. •Serves as reservoir for urine, gradually fills and becomes distended

1. Skin Excretes wastes,

secretes fluid and make possible growth and repair of hair cells.

Through sweating, the skin excretes excess salt, water and other metabolic wastes in the form of perspiration through pores

2. Large intestine

12-24 hours are required for the waste products of digestion to pass through the colon and rectum.

INFORMATION

Green plants in darkness or plants that do not contain chlorophyll produce carbon dioxide and water as respiratory waste products.  Plants can get rid of excess water by transpiration. Waste products may be stored in leaves that fall off. Other waste materials that are exuded by some plants — resins, saps, latexes, etc. These processes do not need added energy, they act passively. Plants also excrete some waste substances into the soil around them.

Plants are not generally considered to possess special mechanisms of elimination. Photosynthetic activities of green plants, in the presence of light, produce oxygen, which diffuses out through openings in the leaves (stomata) or through the cell walls of roots and other plant structures
