Literature Circle Roles Discussion Leader: After reading the book, your job is to develop the group discussion about the section you and your group read. You may create, or choose questions to pose to the group to start the discussion to reflect on the reading.

the debris, brushing away glass and wood rot.

And though part of me wanted to hurry—there

was no telling if or when the floor might

collapse on my head—I couldn’t stop myself

from studying them.”

Summarizer:

In this section of the book, the main character, Jacob Portman, is roaming around the island of

Cairnholm, off the coast of England. There, he is searching for the old orphanage where his grand-father

spent most of his time after fleeing Poland during WWII. When Jacob finally finds the orphanage, he

finds it destroyed by WWII bombs. He crawls in the house to search for any clues about his grand-

father’s past and finds an old cigar box and a chest full of photos—photos that his grand-father had once

shared with him. While he rummages through old chests, a part of the floor gives and he falls deep

inside the basement. When he comes to, he is surrounded by children, and then all of a sudden,

mysteriously disappearing!

Prediction: I think that Jacob will go and find

the children that he woke up seeing. This

will hopefully help Jacob find out more about

his grand-father’s past and why he wanted

Jacob to go searching for “the Bird.”

This quote is important in this section because

it is the point where Jacob is really able to start

investigating his grand-father’s past. He is

sorting through pictures of the old orphanage.

The way that the author describes this scene is

very detailed because I can visualize Jacob

being like a search and rescue worker, digging

through the mess of the orphanage.
