Literature Circle Overview: During this unit, you and your group will read, discuss, and respond to your book. As a group, you must hold each member accountable for work, contributions to discussion, and respectful participation. Each day, rotate Literature Circle roles so that each day, someone has a different responsibility. Daily Assessment:

Daily Schedule and Absences: For 10 days of this unit, you and your group are responsible for sticking to a schedule to finish the assigned book. If, for any reason, you are absent, you will have to stay during 7th hour of the following day to read the pages that your group read during your absence. This is your responsibility, so please do not forget!

Literature Circle Roles Discussion Leader: After reading the book, your job is to develop the group discussion about the section you and your group read. You may create, or choose questions to pose to the group to start the discussion to reflect on the reading.

Sample Questions: What were you thinking about as you read? What did the text make you think about? How might other people (of different backgrounds think about this text/ passage? What one question would you as the subject if you got the chance? Why? What do you think will happen next—and why? What was the most important change in this section? How and why did it happen? What are note-worthy achievements of the subject so far?

Diction Detective: Your job is to carefully examine the diction (word choice) in the assigned section. Watch out for words worth knowing. These words might be interesting, new, important, or used in unusual ways. It is important to indicate the specific location of words so the group can discuss these words in context.

Sample Questions: What new words do you find in this section? What words seem to have special meaning to the subject, characters, or author? Which words are used in unusual ways? Summarizer: Following the discussion, your job is to summarize the section, in your own words, and share it to your group members. Have group members contribute to your summary to make it as accurate as possible. When a clear summary is made, restate it so that all members can write it down in the Literature Circle packet.

“I felt like a rescue worker, plucking faces from

the debris, brushing away glass and wood rot.

And though part of me wanted to hurry—there

was no telling if or when the floor might

collapse on my head—I couldn’t stop myself

from studying them.”

Summarizer:

In this section of the book, the main character, Jacob Portman, is roaming around the island of

Cairnholm, off the coast of England. There, he is searching for the old orphanage where his grand-father

spent most of his time after fleeing Poland during WWII. When Jacob finally finds the orphanage, he

finds it destroyed by WWII bombs. He crawls in the house to search for any clues about his grand-

father’s past and finds an old cigar box and a chest full of photos—photos that his grand-father had once

shared with him. While he rummages through old chests, a part of the floor gives and he falls deep

inside the basement. When he comes to, he is surrounded by children, and then all of a sudden,

mysteriously disappearing!

Prediction: I think that Jacob will go and find

the children that he woke up seeing. This

will hopefully help Jacob find out more about

his grand-father’s past and why he wanted

Jacob to go searching for “the Bird.”

Illuminator: Response

This quote is important in this section because

it is the point where Jacob is really able to start

investigating his grand-father’s past. He is

sorting through pictures of the old orphanage.

The way that the author describes this scene is

very detailed because I can visualize Jacob

being like a search and rescue worker, digging

through the mess of the orphanage.
