BirthLeonardo was born on 15th April 1452, "at the third hour of the night" in the Tuscan hill town of Vinci. His full birth name was "Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci", which means "Leonardo, son of (Mes)ser Piero from Vinci".

Historical background

When he was older, renaissance humanism made him interested in drawing. He drew over 13000 pages of notes and drawings in his journal.

ChildhoodHe spent his first five years in the hamlet of Anchiano, then lived in the household of his father, grandparents and uncle, Francesco, in the small town of Vinci. His father had married a 16 year old girl named Albiera, who loved Leonardo but she died early and young.

There was not much recorded in Leonardo’s early life.

Schooling: Early Years

Leonardo was given the best education that Florence, the appealing and artistic center of Italy, could offer. When he was about 16, he was working for another as a studio boy to Andrea del Verrocchio, the leading Florentine painter and sculptor of his day.

Schooling

When he was 26, Leonardo became an independent master. His first commission, to paint an altarpiece for the chapel of the Palazzo Vecchio, the Florentine town hall. His first large painting, The Adoration of the Magi, left unfinished.

His dreamsFrom 58 to 68 years old he collaborated with the doctor Marcantonio della Torre. Leonardo drew many images of the human skeleton, and was the first to describe the double S form of the backbone. He wished to learn about “the miracle of pregnancy”, he often drew muscles and tendons of the cervical muscles and of the shoulder.

DeathLeonardo died at Clos Lucé, France, on 2nd May 1519 at the age of 67.

Leonardo Da Vinci contributed to the revival of artistic and intellectual achievements. He is recognized as the "father" of the High Renaissance.
