“Don’t feel you have to pigeon-hole yourself into a specific role straight away.” Biography Name: Keri Bunnell Location: Leeds Educational background: MA/MEng Engineering, University of Cambridge (2002); MSc Aerospace Dynamics, Cranfield University (2012); BSc Open (Open) The Open University (2014); IAM Asset Management Certificate (2015) Background First job: Structural Site Engineer, AMEC Infrastructure Current job: Asset Strategy Investment Analyst, Northern Gas Networks Most notable job to date: I really enjoyed the practical aspects and challenges of my first job. I provided engineering supervision for the construction of motorway bridges and structures on the A1(M) Darrington to Dishforth. This included everything from setting-out for all aspects of construction including temporary works, measuring and ordering materials, to landing bridge beams on bearings. Unfortunately, as sometimes site work could be transient, I didn’t feel challenged enough. As a young and inexperienced engineer, instead of asking for more challenges I decided to leave the engineering industry for financial services, which is something I regret with hindsight. What is your greatest achievement? As an Investment Analyst in NGN’s Asset Strategy team I have been working on the development and implementation of a common methodology that will be used by all UK Gas Distribution Networks (GDNs) to assess the health, criticality and monetised risk value of gas network. This has involved project managing several asset groups. This includes coordinating data collection, analysis and validation, risk assessment, risk modelling and scenario/sensitivity analysis. This methodology will help us think about how we optimise asset interventions and investments. And your greatest challenge? One of my greatest challenges was coming back into engineering after working in the actuarial profession for six years. I decided that I wanted the practical and tangible aspects that an engineering career offered as well as the technical challenges. To get myself back into the right mind set I decided to take an engineering MSc course. It was after this I got a Graduate Engineer position with NGN. In time I have been fortunate enough to progress on to an Investment Analyst role in Asset Management. This role has allowed me to continue to develop both my engineering and financial skills. What does the future hold for you? On a personal note, I would like to increase my commercial and project management experience. I also have an interest in the UK energy mix and think that the next 20-30 years will be a very exciting

There are plenty of opportunities available – be open to these and confident enough to go for them. Don’t feel you have to pigeon-hole yourself into a specific role straight away. I would also recommend finding a good Mentor as it is something that has helped support my development at several key stages throughout my career.
