AlanGraham isanenthusiastic farmerwithan involvement in finishingbeefcattle,arablecropping andpromotingdevelopmentopportunities. He is a partner in a family business(AndrewGraham&Sons),thatfarmsatGaviesideandHarwoodFarm,whicharebasedatthevillageofWestCalder.OngraduatingfromtheScottishAgriculturalCollegeinEdinburgh,hereturnedtothefamilybusinessandhasbeenheavilyinvolvedinallaspectsofthebusinessforthepastfifteenyears,developingarangeofskillsinlivestockmanagement,arablehusbandryandmanagement.Hehasrecentlytakenaveryinvolvedinterestinpromotingdevelopmentopportunitiesforthepartnership.Outwith his job he has awide range of interests includingwatching and playing varioussports,andheenjoystravellingtonewplaceswhenonholiday.

AlthoughClairehasbeeninthepotatoindustrysincegraduation,sheactuallygrewuponadairyfarmintheScottishBorders.AftercompletingheragriculturedegreeClairestartedasummerjobwithGreenvaleAP,theUK’slargestpotatocompany.Hersummerjobledtohersecuringafulltimerolewiththeorganisationwhichmeantworkinginvariousdivisionsofthebusinesssuchasagronomy,procurement,tradingandsupplychain.Bythetimeshejoinedusin2012,shewaswellversedinthebusinessofpotatoes!Partofherrolefocusesondealingwithchemicalcompaniestoensurethattheinformationsentouttogrowersispromotingthesamebestpracticemessagesandgainsgreatertractionbyworkingwiththebigcompanies.SheistheleadonAHDB’snationalprojectFightagainstBlight,aservicewhichreportsblight,the highest risk disease to the potato industry working together with farmers andagronomists.Clairealsoworksdirectlywiththefarmerstosupportandassistthemwiththeirtechnicalinput,eitheronaone-on-onebasisorpresentingtosmallgroups.ClaireisveryinvolvedinthePotatoesinPracticeevent,thebiggestfieldeventintheUKwithover600attendees.ThisisaneventdeliveredinpartnershipwiththeJamesHuttonInstitute,AgriiandScotland’sRuralCollege,withAHDB’skeyroleistoprovidetechnicalcontent.Inherfreetimewhenshe’snotplayingtennis,ClaireisoutcyclingintheScottishborders.

Sheena is the owner of Galloway Chillies, an artisan food producer combining traditionalmethodsofproductionwithinnovativesocialmediatechniques.Herfreshchillibusinessgrowsmore than 30 varieties of chillies in a commercial tunnel heated, when required, withrenewables. She sells fresh chillies direct to chefs and restaurants and she uses her ownproducetocreateanawardwinningrangeofchillipreserves,mustardsandhottoddies.She isanambassadorandvolunteer for theWigtownBookFestivaland is thechairof theWigtown Food Festival. Sheena completed the Scottish Enterprise Rural LeadershipProgramme in2016, is a lifememberof theRHASSand is amemberof theDumfries andGallowayEconomicLeadershipGroup.Inher(verylimited)sparetime,Sheenaenjoysreading,walkingandwatchingScotlandrugbyteamatMurrayfieldateveryopportunity.

Bornin1980,TomášIgnácFénixisanewentrantintofarming.Hehasbeenrunninga50haorganicfruitandwinefamilyfarminsouthernMoraviaintheZnojmo/ZnaimregionclosetotheAustrianbordersince2012.Hehasadegree inpolitical science, isengaged inCentralEuropeancooperationprojects,regionalpolitics,andcooperateswithagriculturalandenvironmentalinstitutionsaspartofhisfarmbusiness.HeistheforeignrepresentativeofSMAČRanditsdelegatetoCEJAsince2015,nowholdingthepositionofCEJAVicePresident.Hehasbecomeinvolvedinprojectsconcerningshortsupplychains,originlabelling,reducingbureaucracy,farmprocessingandotherdiversificationforsustainablefarming.Heisalsointheprocessofrebuildinganoldmanorhousetouseforagritourismpurposes.

Neilhasakeeninterestinfarmingandhasdoneforaslongashecanremember.Hisgrandfatherwasatenanteddairyfarmeronalocalestate,sohehasbeenexposedtoagriculturefromanearlyage.AftercompletinghisA-levels,heattendedReaseheathCollegetostudyAgriculturewiththeintentionoftakingoverthefamilyfarm.Unfortunately,thiswasnotaviableoptionandasaresulthewentontospendhis20’sworkingintheconstructionindustry;keepingintouchwiththeagriculturalworldthroughthefarmingpress.Attheageof30hethought“ifIdon’treturntoagricultureIneverwill”.Nowattheageof37heisrunninghisownfarmbusiness.FarmjustoutsideChesterinCheshire,anareahehaslivedmostofmylife,theyhaverelativelysmallfarmatjustover32hectares.Hecontractfarmshisin-lawsfarm,rearingdairyheifersaswellasraisingdairybeefcrosscalves.Theyarealsocurrentlyintheprocessofconvertinganoutbuildingtoaccommodateguests.AwayfromfarmingmostofNeil’stimeistakenupwithhiswife,2yearoldson,andplayingrugbyforWhitchurchRUFC.

26-year-oldJannesMaesgrewuponhisfamily’sdairy,sheepandarablefarminAalter,EastofFlanders.Hehasbeenpassionateaboutagricultureandhorticulturesincechildhood.JannesattendedsecondaryagriculturaleducationandthenobtainedaBachelor’sDegreeinAgriculture.Today,heworkswithhisfamilyonthedairyfarm,cooperatingwithotherfarmersincollectingandprocessingtheirmilk.For several years, he has been an active member of Groene Kring (the largest umbrellaorganisation for young, Flemish farmers and growers), representing them at regional,nationaland international levels.Prior tobeingelectedasCEJAPresident in July2017,heservedtheorganisationfortwoyearsasaVicePresident.

Kate is a fifthgeneration sheepand suckler cow farmer fromahill andupland farmnearPeeblesintheScottishBorders.KatetrainedattheRoyalDickVetSchoolandgraduatedasaveterinarysurgeonin1995,thenspentnearly8yearsworkinginamixedpractice inthedalesofCountyDurham.AftertheFootandMouthoutbreakin2001Kateandherhusbandmovedbacktoherhomefarmtotakeoverthebusinessfromherparents.In2012theywerechosenasQMSMonitorFarmersandoverthenext3yearshostedatotalof18visitsforlocalfarmersandothermembersofthe industry.Thiswas initiallyquitedaunting,buttakingupseveralofthesuggestionsputforwardduringtheprojecthasgreatlyimprovedtheefficiencyofthebusinessandresultedinmanylastingfriendshipsandconnectionsthroughouttheindustry.KatebecameamemberoftheBoardofQualityMeatScotlandin2015anddidtheSERLPin2015-16,whichshethoroughlyenjoyed.ShehasrecentlytakentheChairoftheQMSCattleandSheepStandardsSettingBodyandisalsopartoftheScottishSheepIndustryGroup.SheisapastPresidentofPeeblesshireAgriculturalSociety,amemberofNFUS,lifememberofRHASSandmemberofNSA.ShefrequentlyvolunteerswithRHETandalsorunsaGirlGuideunitinPeebles.InherfreetimeKateenjoysreading,playingbadmintonandwalking,aswellasspendingtimewithherhusbandandfourchildren.

AlthoughbeingafarmerallherlifeLouisefirstbecameapigfarmerin2015asshewantedtodoahogroastforher30thsoshefinishedafewpigsanddidafewmeatboxestofriendsandfamily.SincethenLouisehasidentifiedagapinthemarketforlocaloutdoorrearedfreerangepork.ShehasrecentlystartedtosellsomeofthemeatfromtheirfarmundertheLouise’sFarmKitchenbrand.ThediversificationintothemeatboxbusinesshasbeenagreatassettothebusinessandLouiseishopingtobuildanonfarmbutcheryinthenexttwelvemonthstofurtherincreasethroughputoftheirownmeat.
