GOALS
Students learn how to collect water samples. Then, they will aseptically collect a water sample and use a microscope to look for fresh water organisms.
Students will perform chemical testing of their water samples and make and filter systems.
Extension: culturing and identification of bacteria in water samples.

WATER POLLUTION
• Water pollution is a major worldwide health problem. According to the World Health Organization more than 9 million deaths annually are attributed to waterborne diseases. One billion people do not have clean water.
• Video Water changes everything

WATER CONTAMINATION
• It is impossible to keep water 100% sterile or transported through streams or pipes. Water is going to come into contact with metals, organisms, chemicals ant other contaminants. We should keep water contamination at a minimum by keeping streams, pipes and reservoirs clean and separated from waste water, chemicals, sewage, dirt and other contaminants.

OBJECTIVES
• Students will learn how to collect water samples for quality testing
• Students will analyze water samples for common chemical contaminants
• Students will use a microscope and identify organisms in water samples
• Students will make a filtration system and remove contaminants from your water samples.
