An industrial biotech company situated in the CSIR Mining Innovation Centre, with over 6 years already dedicated to R&D in conjunction with the Council for Science and Industrial Research (CSIR) to develop sustainable biocides.

Based on the development of DECONT-X, a mild organic biocidal active ingredient, BiODX products have gained popularity due to its non-corrosive properties and non-toxicity surrounding microbial decontamination.

Who We Are?

• BiODX’s research was based upon a principal which assumed that triggering an action on sensory parameters of citrus would yield high dosages of biological yield from the target gene.

• BiODX’s innovative processes use the natural enzyme reaction occurring from the time of picking the fruit, where degradation of the antimicrobial component starts as the fruit converts all resources (sugars, bioflavonoids, antimicrobials etc.) in order to stay alive.

• Innovation is also seen in the formation of two active compounds that do not exist in the raw fruit; these two compounds are formed by virtue of the digestion process that converts citric acid and vitamins.

• Formulating preservative into the juice is a stoichiometric reaction. With reference to the formation of vitamin C, a citrus oxidation-reduction system has electron donating and electron accepting properties.

Active Citrus Extract

GC (gas chromatography) analysis identified active peak in citrus extract.

Bioflavonoids which is a main component of citrus has previously been reported as having a growth inhibitory effect on bacteria such as colibacillus, Staphylococcus aureus or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Stabilised Citrus Extract

The reaction between the citrus extract and QAC is a stoichiometric reaction causing an ion exchange between the two compounds allowing the big molecule (citrus extract) to digest certain sugars and other elements into newly formed compounds.

Regulatory Compliance

Originating in response to pollution laws in the USA, organic chemists use all the tools and training of traditional chemistry to create non-hazardous chemicals and processes

that are "benign by design".

Compatibility, Solubility & Stability

• DECONT-X is miscible with water and polar organic solvents.

• Stable in acid and alkaline pH environments from pH 2 up to pH 11.

• Compatible with a wide range of additives and auxiliary products including

surfactants, flocculants, dispersants, corrosion inhibitors and other biocides.

• In common with other non-oxidising biocides, strong reducing and oxidising

agents should be avoided.

• A potent antimicrobial with broad spectrum activity against Gram negative and

Gram positive bacteria, SRB’s, APB’s, anaerobes, yeasts and fungi.

• Possible anion replacement for stabilization under acid condition.

Product Advantages

One of many comparative examples of sustainable VS. conventional chemicals as applicable to cooling towers and there affect on water chemistry.

DECONT-X CHLORINE

Unaffected by ammonia & nitrates Affected by ammonia and nitrates

Non-toxic, no health & safety concerns Major health & safety concerns

pH Neutral Affects water pHPerceived as a protein/food - no resistance Bacterial strains can resist it

Non-corrosive Highly corrosive

Outstandingly effective against biofilm No efficacy against biofilm

No reaction to organic matter Produces trihalomethanes / carcinogens

Stand alone product Require extra chemicals

Stable at 5°c to 112°c Unstable

At 15-25 ppm (in water) is cheaper than chlorine Higher costs

• Stronger chemical concentrations

• Increased chemical costs

• Increased water / rinse costs

• Increased electricity / heating costs

• Increased process costs

• Increased labour / absenteeism costs

Bacteria do not identify DECONT-X as a poison and therefore do not imitate development of resistance.

Bacterial Resistance

Bacteria learn to acquire immunity to conventional chemicals, which means:
