From Editor’s Desk Greetings

CME Special Issue With great pleasure and pride we are releasing the fifth

issue of Biomed.

Another academic year has come to an end and a new

academic year is at our doorstep presenting with new challenges.

The academic year was highly successful with many research

publications to our credit, innovative teaching methods, student

seminars etc. The most highlighted event of the year was the

successful completion of our debutant State level CME on

“Biochemical Aspects of Cardiovascular Diseases –An

Update” on 11th

February 2014.

We are grateful to our beloved principal for his

encouragement and support and I am extremely thankful to my

team who have given more than cent percent in all our ventures.

We are also grateful to all the delegates from our institute,

various other institutions, medical practitioners, officers and

consultants for their active participation in making this CME a

successful one.

The function began with the invocation song by Ms Ashwini, MBBS Student. Welcome address

was given by Dr. Aliya Nusrath, Organizing Chairman. The dignitaries on the dais were felicitated.

Inauguration was done by lighting of the lamp by all the dignitaries. Dr. M G Shivaramu, Principal, AIMS chief guest of the function addressed the gathering. Following the inauguration scientific

session started at 10.30 am with the following topics delivered by the guest speakers.

Procalcitonin Procalcitonin (PCT) is a well-established biomarker for the diagnosis of sepsis. PCT reflects

the severity of bacterial infection and is in particular used to monitor progression of infection into

sepsis or septic shock, infectious diseases like pneumonia, bacterial meningitis and malaria It is

used to measure the activity of the systemic inflammatory response, in therapy and prognosis.

Experimental data have shown that PCT plays an important role during monocyte adhesion and

migration, and further has a stimulatory effect on inducible nitric oxide synthase gene expression in

patients with sepsis, representing key features of the atherosclerotic process. Studies have been

done on the impact of PCT on cardiovascular prognosis and levels were found to correlate with the

extent of atherosclerosis and were even associated with an adverse outcome.

Dr Reshma D, Asst. Professor, Dept. Of Biochemistry

Oxidative stress: Can it be the sole cause for disease progression Oxidative stress is the imbalance between free radical generation and scavenging of the

same in the body. Reactive oxygen species is a term used to define molecules with no free electron

but is very reactive, example hydrogen peroxide, nitric oxide, hypochlorous acid. In cardiovascular

disease oxidation of LDL in presence of several reactive oxygen species is known. This oxidative

modification of LDL is known to be a feature of atherosclerotic process. In diabetes mellitus,

hyperglycemia, atherogenic lipoproteins and advanced glycation end products are linked to

oxidative stress. Increased insulin level causes increased oxidative stress in response to which

recruitment of peroxisomes in hypothalamus will make neurons less susceptible to high levels of

circulating leptins. Regular exercise, healthy dietary habits and no alcohol and tobacco

consumption have been shown to reduce oxidative stress in healthy individuals and also help to

maintain blood glucose levels in diabetic individuals. Treatment with antioxidants have not shown

promising results after the onset of disease but healthy life style keeps in check oxidative stress can

surely help to prevent onset of disease

FetuinA : A Novel marker for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Fetuin, a binding protein synthesized in the liver and is secreted into the bloodstream. It is

more abundantly found in fetal blood, hence the name "fetuin". It’s α2- HS glycoprotein (α2-

Heremans-Schmid glycoprotein) which plays an important role in vascular calcification, regulation

of bone metabolism, insulin resistance, protease activity control, keratinocytes migration, and

breast tumor cell proliferative signaling. Fetuin-A has also been identified as a biomarker for

neurodegenerative disease. Normal range is 0.5 – 1.5 g/L. Higher levels of Fetuin-A levels is found

in conditions of insulin deficiency and insulin resistance. Higher levels of Fetuin-A is associated

with incident diabetes mellitus in older persons regardless of sex, race, or prevalent cardiovascular

disease status. Dr Shilpashree Y D. Asst. Professor, Dept. Of Biochemistry

Research is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought.
