    BIOCHAR PILOTPLANT PREPROJECT

BiocharBiochar is proposed as an agricultural method forcarbon sequestration, while concurrently improvingsoil functions. The method is considered carbonnegative as it removes net carbon dioxide from theatmosphere and stores it in soil. Recent researchsupports the claim that carbon as biochar in soil isstable for several hundred years.

ProjectThe project is a preproject, reviewing the feasibility ofproduction and use of biochar. The project is locatedin a fertile agricultural district in southern Norway. Objectives of the preproject are:

To review the potential for biochar in the designatedagricultural area.

To review necessary requirements for the installationand operation of a pyrolysis plant in the designatedagricultural area.

Project descriptionWorktasks of the project will assess the opportunityof using mobile units for biochar production. Mobileunits facilitate the use of bulky feedstocks, normallyassociated with high transportation costs. Located ator near agricultural fields, mobile units will convertagricultural residues including straw to biochar andthereby greatly reduce transportation cost offeedstock to plant and backhaul of biochar to field. The use of low cost bulky feedstocks is expected tosignificantly ease the commercial introduction ofbiochar. Other workstasks will review biochar as anadsorbant of pesticides used in potato production and

biochar for storage of carbon in soil and as a soilimprover. Production of biochar allows for electricityand heat production and the best method for supplyof heat and electricity from a pyrolysis plant will besought in collaboration with local partners.
