y Bioactive glass-, glass-ceramic and composite coatings Bioactive glasses and glass-ceramics are commonly used for small bone substitutions. These materials are intrinsically brittle, but can be toughened by the addition of a certain amount of biocompatible inclusions; in this way bioactive composites could be prepared, with the advantages of tailoring and predicting their mechanical properties. These composites are prepared by viscous f low pressureless sintering or hot pressing and characterised by microstructural and mechanical methods. Bioactivity and biocompatibility tests can be performed on biocomposites by soaking in simulated body fluid or by cell growth experiments (animal fibroblast culture tests). Bioactive glasses and biocomposites can be used as coating materials for different substrates used for clinical applications, which are biocompatible but not bioactive (e.g. titanium alloys, alumina, zirconia,...). Their use is directed to orthopedics and dental applications were both mechanical strength and bioactivity are required. The coatings are deposed by VPS (Vacuum Plasma Spray) or by firing the glass powders directly on metal or ceramic substrates, using conventional heating. Especially designed bioglass and biocomposite compositions have been developed to improve both the adhesion to the substrate and t o the particles added to obtain the composites.
