ABSTRACT
Biometric ATM machines as it seems to be an effective way of preventing card
usage and is also a channel to expand a banks reach to the rural and illiterate
masses. Union Bank of India installed a first such Kisan ATM at Siyagangai
branch Tamil Nadu. Dena Bank has launched the Bio-metric ATMs in Gujarat.
Andhra Bank has launched mobile biometricaccess ATMs, one each for the Twin
Cities of Hyderabad and Sceunderabad. Corporation Bank has also introduced
talking biometric ATMs. These ATMs talks to the farmer in their local
languages. Present study deals with new innovative model for biometric ATMswhich replace card system by biometric technology for operating ATMs. Proposed
model provides high security in authentication which also protects service user
from unauthorized access. In this proposed model user required to authenticate
himself with biometric identification (Thumb/ Fingerprint/Iris etc.), Personal
Identity Number (PIN) and selection of bank branch from displayed list if
necessary. This proposed model is designed for the rural farmers, semi-literate
peoples. This model reduces complexity with authentication as authentication is
always with you with high security. It also saves time, cost, and efforts compared
with card based ATMs and also saves environmental pollution problem of excessnumber of plastic card.

Introduction to Biometric ATM
A biometric ATM (automatic teller machine) recognizes customer not by an
ATM card or a personal identification number (PIN), but by some aspect of his
or her own body. And banks all over the world are starting to implement thiskind of technology. In Warsaw, Poland, the bank BPS has set up such ATMs.
(Poland has become a technological leader in recent years.)
These machines have also appeared in banks throughout the Middle East,
South America and Africa. The first biometric ATM in India was installed by
ICIC in 2005, in the state of Andhara Pradesh. Today, biometric ATMs are
especially popular in the rural sections of India, where many citizens seem to
dislike and avoid technologies involving PIN numbers.
These machines are especially popular in Japan. In fact, millions of Japanese
banking customers regularly use the nation's tens of thousands of biometric
ATMs. One bank in Japan advertised this machine with the line "you are the
cash card."
In the past, biometric devices usually scanned one or more of the following
items for the purposes of identification , fingerprints , palm prints , the eye,
either the retina or the iris ,vocal patterns ,a person's signature
The latest biometric ATMs, however, examine instead the tiny veins located
just beneath the surface of skin. Everyone has his or her own unique pattern
of "micro-veins" under the fingers, and reading those veins represents a much
more efficient and accurate system than reading fingerprints. According to
studies, biometric micro-vein ATMs will only make a mistake one in
approximately one million times, which is the same rate of accuracy as the
previous champion, a machine that scans irises.

How are Biometric ATMs Effective?
Biometric ATMs are an effective theft deterrent. People can leave their
fingerprints on surfaces, and cunning thieves are able in some cases to lift
those fingerprints, reproduce them, and use the reproductions to trick
machines that read fingerprints. In some gruesome cases, it would also be
possible to cut off one more of a person's fingers and use them to fool
fingerprint-reading machines. Such a hideous process would not work with
vein-reading technology, though. Additionally, with a biometric ATM there areno cards that ATM robbers can swipe, and no PIN numbers that they could
skim. These ATMs are also helpful in the immediate aftermath of natural
disasters. Customers who may have lost their ATM cards during such
disasters would still be able to withdraw much-needed cash.

Biometric ATMs have yet to catch on in North America. Part of the reason is
that many American consumers are suspicious of the idea of turning over
their personal biometric information to a large bank or other corporation.
Could this data be sold for the purposes of advertising and data mining? What
would happen if this data were somehow stolen? It's the kind of question thatconcerns privacy advocates. Another issue is that many banks feel the ATM
systems they currently have in place work just fine, and they don't see the
need for costly upgrades in their automatic teller machine technology. There's
another issue at play. Americans on the whole have become especially
concerned with sanitation lately. Look at how many hand sanitizer dispensers
have been installed in the last ten years they've been showing up not just in
hospitals and nursing homes, but in shopping malls, restaurants, and even
churches. Remember the swine flu scare of 2009, during which Vice President
Joe Biden said on national television that he'd advise his family to avoid
commercial airplanes for fear of germs? Many people in the United States,
therefore, would have reservations about using this hands-on technology,
especially during cold and flu seasons.
Biometric ATM
Biometrics ATM offer ATM type interface along with at-least one Biometrics
capture device like Fingerprint Scanner, Iris camera, Palm/Finger Vein
scanner , Face recognition camera. They are often called Multi-Biometrics
ATM, Wall mount Biometrics ATM, Biometrics Devices / Machine. Most of the
ATM in the past have been using ID cards to identify users but with the wide
acceptance of Biometrics , a new generation of Biometrics ATM are being
deployed for wide range of applications worldwide.

4. Low transaction value
Micro ATMs from BioEnable Technology is a one stop solution for banks bring
ATM services to the unbanked rural areas in a secure manner.
Micro-ATM will be operated by the Bank appointed Business correspondents
(BC )The Bank appointed BC handle the physical currency , not like a regular
ATM machine. All transactions will require online biometric authentication
with the UIDAI authentication server in order to be processed.
This Biometric Micro ATMs will allow customers to perform basic financial
transactions using only their AADHAAR number and their fingerprint as
identity proof (along with a Bank Identification Number for inter-bank
transactions). Unlike an ATM, the cash-in / cash-out functions of the micro
ATM will be performed by an operator, thus bringing down the cost of the
device and the cost of servicing the customer. The micro ATM will support the
following financial transactions:
Cash Transaction :-
1.Cash Deposit ,Cash Withdrawal

Iris Detection System:-
Iris detection is a process of analyzing various patterns of human iris using
iris recognition device, and storing the image in the database. To make iris
detection process work faster, iris recognition system uses certain algorithms.
Iris detection process in iris recognition device automatically detects humaniris and snaps a photo of it.
In Iris detection process, image of the iris is captured. Once captured, iris
detection system determines the outer and inner borders of iris. Iris detection
system then filters the usable structures for analysis, and calculates the iris

code which is saved into the database. Iris detection system verifies the
identity of a person by comparing the code with the one that exists in it.
BioEnable is offering Iris recognition based Time Attendance & Access control
system. Recognition ?
Iris recognition technology offer Dual or Single eye capture and automatic
identification again large databases in just 1-2 seconds.
Iris recognition is considered more secure compared to fingerprint and other
biometric technologies.
Many people have improper fingerprints that are not suitable for fingerprint
recognition systems. Iris is second best alternative to fingerprint.
Children fingerprints are difficult to scan and can go thru changes overtime,
making it not a suitable biometric identification. Iris is suitable for all ages.
Eyes are highly protected part of the body and does not go thru much changesover the complete lifespan and good for long terms biometric recognition
Iris recognition technology is worldwide used in National ID, Visa entry exit
applications

Advantages of Biometrics:-
Biometric identification can provide extremely accurate, secured access to
information; fingerprints, retinal and iris scans produce absolutely uniquedata sets when done properly.
Current methods like password verification have many problems (people
write them down, they forget them, they make up easy-to-hack passwords) &
sometime our ATM cards are also missed .
Automated biometric identification can be done very rapidly and uniformly,
with in a minimum of time. Its a rapid process.
Your identity can be verified without resort to documents that may be stolen,
lost or altered.
Disadvantages of Biometric ATM :-
The finger print of those people working in Chemical industries are often
affected. Therefore these companies should not use the finger print mode of
authentication.
For people affected with diabetes, the eyes get affected resulting in
differences. Sometimes people have some eyes problems also.
Biometrics is an expensive security solution.

Conclusion
Proposed conceptual model is designed for ATM users for various transactions like
withdrawing cash, balance enquiry etc. Point of Sales (POS) machines will alsouse biometric authentication. This system requires biometric authentication (finger
print, iris recognition) which is always with user, PIN code and selection of bank
branch, which then creates virtual account (V-ID) it helps for identification and
authentication of service user. This is card less e-banking technique for ATMs,
which reduces efforts of handling, operating and various risks associated with
cards. The same and simplified procedure will be helpful for Internet, Mobile and
POS transactions. Due to unique method of authentication it reduces cost, time,
and efforts of both banks as well as service users.
