Why bio-reprocessing plant

• A large amount of biodegradable waste is generated everyday.

• It is estimated that about 300-400 gm of biodegradable waste is generated per family per day. ( 4 person/family)

• All this waste is left in dumping grounds.

• Dumping of the waste at dump sites or in water bodies causes health hazards.

BARC’s NISARG-RUNA• BARC’s NISARG-RUNA plant for solid waste management offers a

– Zero garbage, – Zero effluent

By now about 20 plants based on the 'Nisargruna' technology have been set up in and around Mumbai in association with the urban local bodies and NGOs.

e.g. BARC Canteen’s The Training school complex, Anushakti nagar,Mumbai http://www.barc.gov.in/technologies/kitchen/kitchen_br.html

What of kind waste can be processed?

• NISARG-RUNA plant can process almost any biodegradable waste

• kitchen waste- Rice starch, wash water of rice ,used tea powder, coffee powder, waste atta, left out rice, sambar, over ripened fruits, vegetable waste, waste edible oil and other cooked waste from kitchen

– paper, – grass, – gobar,– dry leaves etc.

Quantity of Bio-gas and manure

Under ideal conditions input of 1000 kgs/day of wet biodegradable canteen waste should give

• 100 – 120 m³/day of biogas (40-48 Kgs of LPG)• (1 cubic meter of Bio gas is equal to 0.4 -0.43 kg’s. of L.P.G.)

• 80 – 100 kgs/day of manure

Major Benefits of this project • Saves the natural resources

Environment Energy (petrolum products) Unskilled labour-Job creation.

EnvironmentLand fill will vanish.Saves land and water bodies from pollution.Energy It avoids dependence on petroleum products.

LPG, CNG & Natural gasTransportation of waste to dump yard cost reduced by 75%It creates lot of jobs for poor people .Our surroundings will be clean and eco friendly. Future generation will be happy.

Carbon credit

• One credit is equivalent to one tone of CO2 emission reduced.

• CC is available for companies engaged in developing renewable energy projects that offset the use of fossil fuels.

• Developed countries have to spend nearly $300-500 for every tonne reduction in CO2, against $10-$25 to be spent by developing countries.

• In India, GHG emission is much below the target fixed by Kyoto Protocol.

• India sell surplus credits to developed countries.• Every tone of CO2 not emitted is considered as one credit and

every carbon credit fetches the company $3-6.04/11/23 organic waste bio-reprocessing 10

Page 11: Bio Gas Plant- Details 2013

Advantage of carbon credit

• Advantage of implanting cleaner and sustainable technologies is the ability to avail funding from Prototype carbon Fund which is under the aegis of the World Bank.

• The fund is formed by contributions from many developed nations.

• The only catch being that the carbon credit trading will be at a discounted price.

Total land area , power, water

04/11/23 organic waste bio-reprocessing 13

Total land area required for setting up of NISARGRUNA 1 tpd (ton per day) biogas plant will be:

Actual plant built up area – 40 sq. mtr.Area for movement, landscaping & other maintenance – 100 sq. mtr.Total Plot size required – 9 mtr x 17 mtr. (OR) 30 ft X 56.6 Ft

Power requirementThe Auxiliary power consumption would be 6 - 8 units per day.

Quantity of water required per day

For 1 tpd (1000 kg/day) biogas plant water in this case it would be 1000 liters per day.

Bio gas Vs LPG

• 1 cubic meter of Bio gas is equal to 0.4 -0.43 kg’s. of L.P.G.

• About 5 kg’s of kitchen waste (depends on type of waste) is required for 1 cu m. plant per day.

Running DG set by Bio gas

• The Diesel generator (D.G) sets can be easily modified to run on the methane gas. If aD.G. set is of 10 KW capacity,

• Then Biogas Engine will give assured 50% power, (which comes to 5 KW.).

• The gas consumption is about 1 cum. for 1 KWH power.

• Conversion kits are available in the market. One can install directly the gas engine for running the generator.
