There is a large body of research supporng the applicaon of biochar in viculture specifically, as well as in soils and compost. A dozen of the most recent and relevant are highlighted in support of biochar’s use in viculture. While there are some caveats to be considered when applying biochar, if it’s matched appropriately to the soils at establishment, growers are seeing a 2 to 3 harvest payback. The growing need for improved water management is one of the prime benefits seen in vineyards, and that need is expected to intensify as a changing climate affects water availability further. An addional benefit to an investment in biochar is its longevity—measured in decades to millennia—which also opens the potenal for economic benefit from the developing carbon credit markets. A one percent market penetraon would require about 10,000 tons of biochar annually and though the bulk of grapes grown in the US are along the West Coast, the viculture market provides opportunity in almost every state. The Georgia Forestry Foundaon(GFF) invested in this work to broaden theunderstanding of PES programs, idenfypotenal opportunies, and to increaseengagement with private forestlandowners. It provides a context fordeveloping a PES program addressingforests and water in the state of Georgia, and potenally other areas located in theSoutheastern United States. This workbuilds upon previous research in Georgiathat explored and quanfied ecosystemservices and market opportunies.

This work also builds upon established watershed level projects and partnerships, includingthe startup and advancement of the Savannah River’s Clean Water Fund (SRCWF), the firstof its kind in the region. The partnerships established by the Southeastern Partnership forForests and Water in the Oconee, Middle Chaahoochee, and Savannah River watershedsgreatly enhance the opportunies to develop payment for ecosystem servicesprograms. The chapters in this report build upon the exisng foundaonal knowledge andaddress many dimensions of forest-water PES program opportunies in Georgia.

This project was made possible through a grant provided by the U.S. Endowment forForestry & Communies. The project involved coordinaon and collaboraon with severalorganizaons and experts, including the USDA Forest Service and the SoutheasternPartnership for Forests & Water. Partnerships with the University of Georgia WarnellSchool of Forestry & Natural Resources and the Georgia Forestry Commission are cricalfor connued landowner outreach and engagement. The project included forums that weresponsored by Georgia-Pacific.
