The friction necessary to maintain theproper interpupillary distance (distance be-tween the eyes) is created by eleven rubber0-rings installed in the grooves of the indexpin. Once this distance is set for your eyespacing, the reading on the interpupillary scale(5) can be noted for future reference.

Each telescope is comprised of eyecups (1),a housing assembly (2 or 3) and objectivecovers (4). These assemblies are opticallyprealigned at the factory and must not bedisassembled.

By rotating the knurled adapter ring (6) ofthe eyepieces, you can focus each telescopeto accommodate your particular optical charac-teristics. The reading on each diopter scale (7)should then be noted for future reference. Theeye lens cover (8) should be placed over theeyepieces when the binocular is not in use.

LASER PROTECTION FILTERS

W A R N I N G

Use of a binocular with a faultycoated lens may result in irreparableeye damage if laser light is viewedthrough the binocular.

The M22 Binocular is provided with laser protec-tion filters as indicated by the label (1) locatedon the objective lens filter frame. The laserprotective coating is contained on the insidesurface of the outermost lens. If this lens is lostor damaged the binocular is considered non-operational and must be turned in. Under the

4

special conditions when direct sunlightenters the binocular, a portion of thislight will be reflected back, producing asun glint which may be detectable atpositions in the general target field.

DO'S Handle the binocular with care. Dropping or jarring the binocular candamage or misalign the optics. Use the neckstrap to protect againstaccidental dropping of the binocular.

DON’TS

Keep the binocular as clean and dry as possible and always store inclean, dry place when not actually in use.

Follow the instructions outlined in this TM to obtain the best possibleusage and service from the binocular.

Do not use a dry cloth to clean the glass surfaces of the binocular.Specific cleaning instructions are given on page 13.Do not attempt to open or close the binocular beyond its stop limitsas this may damage internal and external parts.

Do not unnecessarily expose the binocular to severe weatherelements, Special precautions are noted on pages 11 and 12.

Do not force the knurled adapter rings beyond marked diopter scalereadings as this may damage internal parts.

W A R N I N GWhen using the binocular, never pointit directly at the sun. The heat gener-ated by the focused rays of the sun maycause serious damage to your eyes andto the optical elements of the binocular.

TM 9-1240-403-12&P

Interpupillary AdjustmentTo obtain the proper interpupillary setting

for your particular eye spacing, view a distantobject through the binocular. Then, rotate thetelescopes about the center of hinge until bothcircular fields of view have merged mto onecircle. Note the reading on the interpupillaryscale (1) for future reference.

Diopter Adjustment

Each eyepiece of the binocular has a diopterscale graduated from plus 4 to minus 4 inhalf-diopter increments and can be adjustedto suit your eyesight characteristics. Rotatethe knurled adapter rings (2) to obtain thesharpest focus and note the scale readings forfuture reference.

7

Page 18: Binocular

TM 9-1240-403-12&P

NORMAL OPERATION

(1) Place neck strap about your neck.

(2) Remove eye lens cover by first rotating binocular telescopesinward and then Iifting off eye lens cover.

(3) Unsnap objective covers from front of binocular and let themhang down from binocular.

(4) Close the telescopes of the binocular until the interpupillaryindex scale is at the proper setting for use (see page 7).

(5) Rotate the eyepiece adapter rings to obtain the proper diopter settings on the diopter scale (see page 7).

(6) When sighting through the binocular, hold it in a comfortableand stable position.

(7) Refer to pages 11 and 12 for precautions to be observedwhen unusual weather or atmosphere conditions prevail.

8

Page 19: Binocular

TM 9-1240-403-12&P

USE OF RETICLEOne of the telescopes of the binocular includes a horizontal and vertical scale reticle

graduated in 10-mil increment unit markings (1 unit - 10 mils, 2 units - 20 mils, etc.).

Fire corrections can be made by viewing the impact area and determining angularcorrections by use of the left or right horizontal reticle scale.

9

Page 20: Binocular

TM 9-1240-403-12&P

USE OF RETICLE (cont’d)In determining range, if an object fills one 10 mil unit marking on the horizontal reticle

scale and is known to be 10 meters wide, the object is 1000 meters away. If the same sizeobject fills two unit markings (20 mils), it would be 500 meters away. When this formula isused, the distance will be given in the same units of measurement (feet, meters, etc.) as isused in estimating the known size of the object. The same formula can be used todetermine range with the vertical reticle scale when the height of an object is known. Theuse of the vertical scale is preferred (especially on level terrain), since objects are oftenviewed obliquely along the horizontal axis.

10

Page 21: Binocular

TM 9-1240-403-12&P

EXTREME COLD(1) Avoid breathing directly on the optical ele-

ments of the binocular. The breath may condenseand freeze.

(2) Do not expose the binocular to sudden andextreme temperature changes, such as carrying itdirectly from a well-heated area into sub-zero temper-atures. Extreme temperature changes may cause theoptical elements to crack.

EXTREME HEAT(1) Do not allow the binocular to lie unprotected

from the direct rays of the sun. The intensified heatmay damage the binocular mechanisms.

(2) Place the binocular objective and eye lenscovers on the binocular before entering an air conditionedarea. This will permit the binocular to cool downgradually and prevent condensation from forming.

11

Page 22: Binocular

TM 9-1240-403-12&P

OTHER EXTREME CONDITIONSSand and Dust

(1) Always keep the binocular objective and eyelens covers on when not actually in use. Sand anddust will etch glass surfaces and can penetratethrough the smallest openings, thereby causing damageto adjusting mechanisms.

(2) Upon completion of operations, remove allparticles of sand and dust from optical elements asinstructed on page 13 before installing protectiveobjective and eye lens covers.

High Humidity or Salty Conditions(1) Avoid exposing the binocular to direct salt

spray. Salt water is extremely corrosive and can causeirreparable damage to the binocular.

(2) Always dry the binocular thoroughly after useand immediately clean lens as instructed on page 13and install objective and eye lens covers.

12
