What has been happening in Secondary English?

Stage 4 – Stage 4 students are getting close to finishing their Popular Poetry unit. Students have been exploring techniques, themes and the way texts create meaning through the exploration of popular music. The pictures show some of their own poetry creations using colour symbolism, personification, simile and metaphor as well as blackout poetry.

Stage 5 – This week, Stage 5 English will be concluding their Bingara Nine-Nine unit. Students have enjoyed exploring crime fiction and have made inferences supported by evidence from the texts and answered complex text-dependent questions. They have also liked responding creatively to texts, in particular developing a closing address to the jury as either the prosecution or defence in the case of the murder of Mr Patrick Maloney (Lamb to the Slaughter by Roald Dahl). This persuasive task will be the first piece of their term long portfolio assessment.

Stage 6 – Stage 6 will finish their close study of the novel ‘Raw’ by Scott Monk at the end of this week.

This unit has seen them develop some impressive multimodal presentations in the form of a character

life box. Students have represented their chosen character from the text using both tangible and

intangible elements and supported these with detailed reference and analysis of the text.

School bus drivers have made contact with staff regarding safety issues with school students and buses. Please DO NOT call your children across the road in between buses as they arrive at school. This has been happening at home time when parents pick up their children. Obvious safety concern here as the parents should instead come and collect their children from the school grounds and walk across the road together.

NEWSLETTER If you have provided the school with an email address you will receive the Newsletter via email. If you wish to receive a hardcopy, please see the ladies in the front office.

Tell Them From Me student feedback survey (Term 1, 2020)

Bingara Central School, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department

of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures

factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of

the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback

on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways

that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have

used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will

help improve how we do things at our school.

I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will

typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours be-

tween 9 March and 8 May. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.

If you do not want your child or children to participate, please contact the school by Friday 6th

March.

Copies of FAQs are available from: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents.
