If you want to close an object, you will need a close-assist gas spring (see page 1191). Note: All gas springs contain pressurized nitrogen gas as well as hydraulic fluid that lubricates the seal and provides slam-resistant damping at the end of the stroke. To avoid loss of force, you should store and install gas springs rod-end down. Your gas spring must have enough force to lift your object and hold it open, yet not too much force that you can’t push it back to its original position. To determine the right amount of force, you’ll need to know the weight of the object you’re moving. One way to do this is to use a force or tension gauge (see page 1561). Estimating Force—If you can’t weigh your object, use the following chart to help determine its weight so you can estimate the force you’ll need: Choosing the Right Extended and Compressed Length To determine the extended length that’s right for your application, open your lid as wide as you need and measure the distance between the two mounting points. For compressed length, close your lid (or lower it to where you need it) and measure the distance between the two mounting points. A Guide to Choosing the Correct Gas Springs The examples at left illustrate how the length, weight, and opening direction of your object as well as the mounting position of the springs can affect which gas springs are right for your application. Find an example that is similar to your application and use it as a guide to select your springs. The specifications are based on using two gas springs (one on each side of the object), a 90° opening, and the center of gravity at the middle of the object. Note: The recommended force rating is per spring. About Gas Springs

Choosing the Right Force

Gas springs are typically used to assist in opening lids, covers, windows, conveyors, and seats—similar to a hatchback opening on a car.

Estimating Force—If you can’t weigh your object, use the following chart to help determine its weight so you can estimate the force you’ll need:

Choosing the Right Extended and Compressed Length

To determine the extended length that’s right for your application, open your lid as wide as you need and measure the distance between the two mounting points. For compressed length, close your lid (or lower it to where you need it) and measure the distance between the two mounting points.

A Guide to Choosing the Correct Gas SpringsThe examples at left illustrate how the length, weight, and opening direction of your object as well

as the mounting position of the springs can affect which gas springs are right for your application. Find an example that is similar to your application and use it as a guide to select your springs. The specifications are based on using two gas springs (one on each side of the object), a 90° opening, and the center of gravity at the middle of the object. Note: The recommended force rating is per spring.

Gas SpringsFor information about gas springs, see page 1186.

(Continued on following page)

The most versatile gas-spring fittings, these ball-socket fittings rotate in any direction to compensate for misalignment. They require a ball stud or ball bracket (sold separately below) to mount your gas spring. The ball sockets easily snap right onto the stud/bracket ball—just make sure

the sockets and studs/brackets have the same ball size. All sockets have safety clips for secure attachment to studs/brackets except for quick-release sockets, which do not require clips (nylon socket has a snap-on cover to securely hold the ball; steel socket is spring loaded).

Need to mount your gas spring? We offer an array of fittings, mounting studs, and mounting brackets to meet your requirements. You can use the same or two different style fittings on each end of your gas spring. Be sure to match the rod and end thread size of your gas spring to the thread size of the fittings. The fittings will increase your gas spring’s extended and compressed lengths, so add the (A) value for each fitting you attach.

Gas Springs with Ball-Joint Fittings

Pair an eyelet fitting and eyelet mounting bracket (each sold separately below) to mount your gas spring, unless noted. Eyelet fittings with a 0.39 eyelet dia. require a bolt or pin (not included) to mount a gas spring. Your bolt or pin must be compatible with the 0.39 eyelet dia. Eyelet mount-ing brackets have 0.24 dia. mounting holes for attaching to a lid, wall, or other surface. Fasteners for attaching brackets are not included.

Just use the included hex key to open the hex socket and bleed off the gas—no disassembly required. All of these gas springs come with the most versatile fittings: ball-joint fittings consisting of a ball socket and ball stud that rotate 360° to compensate for misalignment. The ball-joint fittings can be easily removed.

The cylinder and piston rod are made of steel. The seal is rubber.

Temperature range is –40° to +212° F.Locking Gas Springs—Reduce damage to equipment—an external

sleeve automatically locks these springs in their fully extended position. To release, pull the sleeve. Note: When using two gas springs in a locking application, use one locking spring and one nonlocking spring.

Not sure what force you need? A bleed-off valve allows you to release gas to permanently reduce the force. All gas springs come charged to their maximum force.

Note: Release gas in very small increments and then test your application. Once gas is released, the force is permanently reduced. Steel Gas Springs with Ball-Joint Fittings

Reducible-Force Gas Springs with Fittings

The choice for corrosive environments, these gas springs have a Type 316 stainless steel cylin-der and piston rod. They also have a rubber seal and come with an eyelet fitting on each end. You can easily remove the eyelet fittings. Temperature range is –40° to +300° F.

All gas springs have a bleed-off valve to release the gas. Note: You will have to remove the end fitting to access the bleed-off valve.

Rod Protectors—Slip one of these protectors over the gas-spring rod and under the eyelet fitting to protect the rod from debris and minimize damage to the seal. All are made of Type 316 stainless steel. The 240-lb. models are 1 dia.; 500-lb. models are 1.25 dia.

Regulator Kit—Once you release gas from your gas spring, you can’t go back. Attaching a kit lets you monitor how much gas you are releasing as you do it. Each kit contains a pressure gauge, manifold, and bronze fittings.

Mounting Brackets—To mount your gas spring, use a mounting bracket. They’re made of stainless steel and have mounting holes for attaching to a lid, wall, or other surface. Fasteners for attaching brackets are not included.

Gas SpringsFor information about gas springs, see page 1186.

When you team one of these gas springs with a release control (each sold sepa-rately) you can lock the gas spring in place and then release it with a push of a button or lever.

Gas Springs—A valve on the rod end interacts with the release control to operate the gas spring. The cylinder end comes with the most versatile fitting: a ball-joint fitting consisting of a ball socket and ball stud that rotate 360° to compensate for misalignment. The ball-joint fitting can be easily removed.

All gas springs have a steel cylinder and piston rod. Seal is rubber. Temperature range is –22° to +176° F. To Order : Please specify force from those available below. If you don’t see the exact force you need, round up to the closest available force.

Release Controls—Have an eyelet connector that threads right onto the threads at the rod end of the gas spring. The eyelet hole diameter is 0.32. To mount the gas spring with a release control, use an eyelet bracket (not included; see page 1188) for the push-button style control; a bolt or pin for the lever-style control.

Push-button style has a hydraulic cable that lets you actuate the gas spring from a distance (see listing). It has a 1.97 long M16 threaded body for panel mounting.

Lever style has a 5.12 long lever that attaches to either side of its eyelet connector.

Small in size, but not in strength, these gas springs are often used to replace coil springs in metal stamping and die-spring applications. They match the diameter and stroke length of coil die springs, but offer much more force. Compared to other gas springs, they exert high force with short stroke lengths. They can also be mounted with the rod in any position.

All springs have a steel cylinder and piston rod. Seal is polyurethane. A rod scraper protects the seal from debris, prolonging the life of the spring. Temperature range is 32° to 176° F. Color-coded labels help ensure you choose the correct replacement. To Order : Please specify force from those available below. If you don’t see the exact force you need, round up to the closest available force.

Mounting flanges allow panel mounting. They slide onto a groove in the cylinder body and stay in place with included clips. Mounting fasteners are not included. Gas SpringsExtend.Lg. (A)

Also known as tension or traction gas springs, the force on these springs pulls the piston rod inward, operating in the opposite direction of other gas springs. At rest, the spring is compressed; you have to pull to extend it. Great for use on doors and hoods that need to stay shut.

All of these gas springs come with the most versatile fittings: ball-joint fittings consisting of a ball socket and ball stud that rotate in any direction to compensate for misalignment. The ball-joint fittings can be easily removed. The ball diameter is 13 mm.

The cylinder and piston rod are steel. Seal is rubber. Temperature range is –22° to +176° F. To Order : Please specify force from those available below. If you don’t see the exact force you need, round up to the closest available force.

Compact Gas Springs—Offer shorter compressed and extended lengths without sacrific-ing stroke length.
