Hello out there. Well
it's time to pass the
Presidential baton and
hopefully it will relay
into the stable hands
of a guitar picker who
will lead this organi-
zation into an innovative and inter-
esting youth band era! It has been an
honor to work with such great peo-
ple like Linda Michael, Edd
Burhans, Olen Dillingham, Rex
Barnes, the Elkans, Dave Reitz,
Chuck Webb and Tony Arana. This
hard working Board of Directors,
along with Doug Weiss has collec-
tively taken the Western Swing So-
ciety from shaky to solvent and they
will continue to lead it with dignity
and dedication into a bright looking
future. They all deserve a big hand
along with our other volunteers who
bring our dance to you every month.
So in January extend a big THANK
YOU to your board and to Cora,
Caroline, Eleanor, Bob and Virginia,
Gary, Don and Susan, Nancy, Cyndi,
Janet, Bob and Melody. It is because
of the efforts of all these good folks
that our Society's dance is the best
Western Swing dance that California
has to offer!
We had many terrific bands perform
for us within the last year. It is hard
to find any better than the likes of
Buck Ford, Robby James, Gary
Campbell or Bill Enyeart and their
respective gifted bands, for example,
but the Western Swing Society is so
fortunate to have these and numer-
ous other great bands who donate
their precious time and talents to
play for us every first Sunday of the
month. This is in large part due to
the natural charms of Ronnie Elkan,
our music director, who seems to

ALBUM REVIEW with MIKE GROSS
Album: Time Changes Every-
thing
Artist: Leon Rausch
This new CD features 15 cuts of
which 10 are brand new record-
ings featuring the voice of this
Western Swing vocal legend. The
remaining five cuts are four live
spoken word pieces of the great Bob Wills, Leon's
longtime boss and a 1987 intro to Leon and his
group at the White House. Leon is backed on this
album by so many wonderful musicians including
the steel guitars of album producer Tommy (Waco)
Spurlock on most of the cuts and that of the great
Bobby Koefer on two cuts. Also very prominent are
the fiddles of James Penni-
baker, James Faver and
Glen Duncan. So many
other wonderful musicians
are heard on this album in-
cluding the piano playing
of both Floyd Domino and
Wayne Glasson.
All of the cuts are from the
Bob Wills songbook with the exception of Rich
O'Brien's Bob Wills tribute Taking Bob Back to
Tulsa. The album opens with Fred Rose's Deep Wa-
ter and also includes Rose's Rose of Old Pawnee.
Also heard are two of Cindy Walker's masterpieces,
Dusty Skies and Bubbles in My Beer with Paulette
Carlson joining Leon on vocal on that one. Rodney
Crowell guest vocals along with Leon on Ida Red.
Both Bobby and Tommy's steel guitars are heard on
Corrine, Corrina. Also brought back are Fan It,
Tommy Duncan's Time Changes Everything and 4
or 5 Times with Bobby on steel.
This album can be ordered for $10 plus $3 for s&h
from Tommy Spurlock, 351 Buckhorn, Azle, TX
76020.

The Jam Room is proving to be a great success and
a lot of fun. Time often runs out on the main stage
for guest performers but that doesn’t mean you
can’t strut your stuff. Come on back to the JR
where Board member, Tony ‘Jammin’ Arana is in
charge. Bring your instrument, voice, fans, or what-
ever and share your talent. We’d love to hear you.
BILLY ROBERTS Inducted October 7, 1984
The Western Swing Hall of Fame has become
unique in an unexpected way, Father and Son mem-
bers, which means this form of American music is
very stable and in good hands for future devotees of
country music.
Already inducted are Vern and Jimmy Baughman,
Johnny and George Cecil, Truitt and Kirby Cun-
ningham , Loyd and Perry Jones. Today we are writ-
ing about the Hall of Fame son, Billy Roberts whose
father, “Cotton” Roberts, is also a member.
Billy is a drummer and vocalist who was exposed to
music all his life. His first vocal in public was “You
Are My Sunshine” performed with the Loyd Jones
Band at school when he was 9 or 10 years old. Not
much later he joined the Loyd Jones Band as drum-
mer. Loyd labeled Billy as one of the best he ever
used.
Over the years Billy has played with groups led by
Tiny Moore, Bill Pray, and Loyd and Perry Jones, as
well as traveling extensively playing with his own
group, playing everything from rock to blues to
country.

LARRY G. ANDERSON Inducted October 1,2017
I was born on March 29, 1942 in Wheeler, Texas.
My dad went to work for a pipeline company in
Fritch, Texas when I was 5 years old. I attended all
eight grades of elementary school in Fritch, TX. The
year I graduated from eighth grade, my father was
transferred to Miami, TX. I completed all four years
of high school in Miami, TX, graduating in 1960. I
attended and completed my college education at
West Texas State University in Canyon, TX, gradu-
ating in 1964 with a BBA degree in business man-
agement.
My dad had 3 brothers and 2 sisters, all who played
music. One of the earliest recollections was going to
country dances where my uncles played for the
dances. I became interested in learning to play when
I was 15 years old and my dad bought me a Sears
Silvertone guitar. I began learning to play and my
aunts and uncles would show me chords and I

listened to country and swing music and I tried to
learn all I could.
I met some guys in college and started to play more,
still working on playing guitar. After graduated from
college, I went to work for a company in Midland,
TX. I spent 8 months there and then was transferred
to Andrews, TX. It was there that I met a group mu-
sicians and started playing with them every week. I
became a pretty good guitar player.
Two years later I was transferred to Ft. Worth and
started playing with a group there. It was at this time
I started playing bass guitar with 2 or 3 groups in
that area. I moved to Amarillo, TX in 1978 and start-
ed playing with some local bands in the Amarillo
area and continued until now. I have had the privi-
lege of sitting in with musicians such as Hank Sing-
er, David Waters, Chuck Cusimano, John Buffing-
ton and many others thru the years. I have been a
member of the Western Swing Music Society of the
Southwest now for 8 years and have enjoyed playing
at all the functions. I was elected VP of this society
in 2014 and continue enjoying country/swing music
and getting to play with some great musicians.
I married Betty Bean of Iowa Park, TX in January
2015 and subsequently moved to Iowa Park after-
wards. Betty is also active in our Western Swing
music society. We love to dance to Western Swing
and do so 3 or 4 times a week, as well as playing
bass for 2 or 3 local groups as needed.
I was inducted into the Northwest Western Swing
Music Society in August of 2016.

BIG REQUEST!
Youth Band Director’s Main Goal of the Month:
“Get the word out!”
Dave Chan is distributing an email to music and
performing arts teachers at high schools all around
the Sacramento area, along with other music-related
institutions such as Skip’s Music and Kline Music.
The email serves to introduce the Western Swing
Society, the youth band and its director. We are
striving to make this information available to all stu-
dents, regardless of whether they are formally en-
rolled in a music class, through vehicles such as
school newspapers and school websites, as long as it
is allowed by the principal of the school.
It is also important to have resources available in the
form of printed music for the students. Edd Burhans
has already supplied music for teaching 10 bona
fide western swing songs. Also in the works is the
establishment of an email system specifically for the
youth band to promote open and efficient communi-
cation for exclusive use of youth band director, fu-
ture youth band members and overseeing board
members. This will be overseen by Dave Rietz.
