CELEBRATING OUR 100 YEARS
Les was born in the NSW town of Temora. Like most lads growing up in the pre-war period, Les
along with brother Herb was an avid and willing participant in all types of sporting endeavours.
While still at school, Les was born a keen soccer player, and as a member of the school team
distinguished himself on many occasions. His prowess was such, that he was rewarded for his
efforts by being named ‘All schools soccer champion’.
Moving down to Sydney, Les continued his interest in sport, and showed that he was no slouch with
a tennis racquet when he won the Illawarra District ‘C’ grade singles championship. This was no
mean feat when you consider the calibre of the players that came out of Illawarra District, John
Bromwich and Ken Rosewall to name but two of them.
The true sporting loves of Les’s life however, were billiards, snooker and lawn bowls. Les won the
major state Snooker Chyampionship in 1938, and followed this in 1939 by winning the Minor
State Billiards Championship, and also the big double, billiards and snooker Championships in
the same year.

CELEBRATING OUR 100 YEARS
A promising career was interrupted by the advent of the Second World War, and Les being the
true patriot and proud Australian, enlisted in the A.I.F. in 1940 and served till the end of the war
in 1945.
At the conclusion of hostilities, Les returned to civilian life, and immediately took up where he left
off in the sport, by winning the Major State Billiards and Snooker Championships in 1946. In all
Les annexed 13 State Titles in billiards and snooker, and also represented NSW with distinction
and success in the Interstate R.S.L. Championships.
In lawn bowls les also achieved championship status, and was runner-up in the State Bowls singles
in 1955. A green keeper by profession, Les won the Australian Greenkeepers Bowls Singles
Championship in 1972.
Always the consummate gentleman, Les has won the respect and friendship of everybody he has
come into contact with in all walks of life. As a direct consequence, Les has had no less than 5 life
memberships conferred on him including, Sutherland School of Art, Victorian Billiards and
Snooker Association, Cronulla Bowling Club, Cronulla RSL Club and St George Leagues Club.

Life Memberships are something that are not given lightly, and the fact that so many
organisations felt that Les was worthy of the honour speaks volumes for the quality of the man.
One of the most brilliant and fluent cueists that this state has ever produced, Les still an active
participant in the game, and is even now a formidable opponent at any level of competition.
Having been on the end of Les Mangelsdorf hiding on many occasions, (it seemed I ran into him
almost every year), I can honestly say that Les is one of the most gracious winners in Sport, and it
goes without saying, that whenever he lost to anybody, he lost with dignity.
The great games of Billiards and Snooker are far richer for having Les Mangelsdorf as a
champion player, and an ‘Ambassador Nonpareil’. Les has been an ornament to the sport, and
we sincerely hope he continues to grace the game for many more years to come.
This article was supplied by Cronulla RSL Snooker and Billiards Club and was written in 1999 for their 5o year celebrations of Club.
