Billboard Analysing a Magazine Front Cover Media Alevel

Brooke Kelly. Analysing a magazine front cover. Audience- the target audience of Billboard magazine varies from young teens of 16 to young adults of 26. This is because of the bright colours used and they can relate to the young artists as wel as enjoy their particular music type. Billboard is aimed at both genders as both male and female artists are featured in the magazine so both genders could relate to the magazine. The magazine would be aimed at those who’s enjoy pop music as the cover lines show a pop music theme due to including popular artists such as Ellie Goulding, La Gaga etc. Billboard targets a socio-economic group of D and E. This is because the majority of the audience would be students from ages 16-26. Representation- the masthead of the magazine is ‘Billboard’. The word billboard is partly covered by the main image which shows that the institution who created the magazine are confident that the audience will be able to recognise the magazine still. The mast head is also in bold white font which stands out well to the target audience due to being on a white background. The main image is of Justin Bieber who is a young music artist. Justin Bieber is making direct eye contact with the audience which shows he is trying to attract the attention of the audience. The way he is slightly bends over shows his personality as well as his status. The light blue background represents Justin Bieber as a young artist as light blue is usually associated with younger boys. If it was a girl they would more likely use the colour pink. Genre- the genre of this magazine is an American music magazine. It is clear to the target audience that it is a music magazine as a popular music artist (Justin Bieber) is shown on the front of the magazine. Also other music artists (such Ellie Goulding and lady gaga) are shown as being featured in the magazine as they have given short quotes and thumbnails around the main storyline of Justin Bieber. Billboard would also be recognised by their target audience as they have their own music charts e.g. ‘Billboard hot 100, billboard 200’ which ranks the top songs and albums regardless of genre. Language- the camera shot of the main image is showing Justin Bieber in a mid- long shot. He is showing direct address to the audience as he is giving them eye contact. This means he is trying to attract the audience’s attention. There has been quite high lighting used as the background is a light blue which suggests happiest and freedom. This effects the target audience as it will make them want to by the magazine due to the happiest they will feel from seeing it. Bright colours such as red and yellow have been used, this suggest the magazine does not have a specific gendered audience as red and yellow are stereotypically male and female colours. Also those colours suggest the magazine has a younger target audience as they are bright and not pastel colours. Institution- Billboard is headquartered in New York with bureaus in Los Angeles and Miami, and has editorial correspondents in major cities around the globe. Billboard is owned by Prometheus Global media and specialised in the music industry in the 1960s. This would influence the rest of the content of the magazine as Billboard would target a young audience as they track the most popular songs and albums across several categories on a weekly basis which a young audience would be interested in due to keeping up to date with everyone else.
