POETIC BILDUNG

” The folk high school is the only non-religious institution in our contemporary society that emphasize that which we do not know.” (Head of Folk high School)

• Establishing a space where questions, regarding existential issues can be raised.

• ‘Weak’ approach (Biesta), in the sense that it represents a counter-position to more instrumental approaches to Bildung

POLITICAL BILDUNG

The folk high school represents a smaller forum, where students can practice democratic skills in order to engage with issues related to the current global issues such as climate change, economical crises, immigrants og rising poverty. (Teacher – Folk high school)

• Emphasizes attitude, action, responsibility and critique

• ‘Strong’ approach, with potential for action oriented overload.

CULTURAL BUILDING

Our task is to build students' ability to engage in and in communities when they leave school.

• community, identity, participation and experience

• ‘Weak’, approach emphasizing open processes. Who am I? Who are we?

PROFFESSIONAL BILDUNG

“The professional perspective itself is not the most important at the school. The perspectives about the learning that takes place is more important.” (Folk highschool teacher)

• Skills, Immersion, interest, perspectives

• ‘Strong’ bildung perspective, offers specific skills for further studies and work life

FOLK HIGH SCHOOL PEDAGOGY AND THEIR POTENTIAL FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Bildung Continuums: Weak/strong – Negative/positive

• Different forms of intellectuality – the narrative as the central theme.

• A rational language vs. a narrative language.

Bodily experience based education vs. rational education on sustainable development

• The folk high school pedagogy contains both a existential and a political perspective

• 24 hour “learning experience” that is not bound to the class room, but rather combines education and lived life.

Alternative arenas for developing meaningful strategies in order to deal with “schlüssel probleme”

• Open and curious approach, rather than fixed agendas or end goals

• Experiencing and understanding thinking and acting responsible in relation to a common and practical human existence.
