    INTRODUCTION

    The thirty-fourth Bilderberg Meeting was held at the Gleneagles Hotel, Auchterarder, Perthshire, Scotland on April 25, 26, an d 27, 1986. There were 109 participants from 19 European countries, the United States, an d Canada. Theyrepresented governm ent, diplomacy, politics, business, law, labor, education, journalism, the military, an d institutes specializing in national an d international studies.Al l participants spoke in a personal capacity, w ithout committing in any way theorganizations or governments to which they belonged. As is usual at BilderbergMeetings, in. order to permit frank and open discussion, no reporting o f the conference proceedings was allowed.

    In opening the conference, Lord Roll o f Ipsden, the Chairman o f the BilderbergMeetings, welcomed the participants to Gleneagles. He then read the text o f a message o f thanks and good wishes, sent on behalf o f all those at the conference, toHer Majesty Queen Elizabeth. The Chairman also took note o f the death o f OlofPalme, who ha d attended many past Bilderberg Meetings and had been scheduled to

    be a participant an d panelist at the Gleneagles Conference.
