Banda Aceh Psycho-social support programme (PSP) rehabilitation assessment

• Studied the education and training assessment for tsunami-affected families organized by PMI and Saudi Red Crescent.

• Coordinated with PMI to supply them with working equipment and tools.

• Waiting for quotation for all working equipment and tools from suppliers.

Beneficiaries are tsunami affected families and include: farmers; tailors; handymen; merchants; fishermen; entrepreneurs; breeders

• Two paediatricians and two paediatric nurses from Turkey are still working with local medical staff. This will continue until the end of August 2005.

Psycho-social support programme (PSP)

• American Red Cross: Programme manager in country. Assessments and discussions in progress with 10 communities and 10 schools in Banda Aceh. Purchase and delivery of 200 single mattresses / sheets / pillows and 350 notebooks, 200 sets of crayons, 200 sets of pencils to assist in education for Montasik orphanage residents. In partnership with PMI and Turkish Red Crescent, and as part of the PSP activities; benefiting 170 children.

• Three psychologists paid by Turkish RC (until end of 2005) are working with and through PMI.

• Two delegates will be working with Danish Red Cross / PMI the second week of August, and will then work with PMI to develop and implement programmes in communities where Canadian RC is rebuilding homes

• The initial six months (Jan-June) objectives have been met.

• Australian Red Cross has provided two consultants to review project implementation.

• The programme continues as planned with Danish Red Cross’ own funding, and will focus on consolidation of activities; the pace of the programme will be reduced to a more “normal” level.

• 60,000 beneficiaries have received information on psycho-social related issues. Schools have been engaged with activities for children. Activities in temporary living centres established.

• Distribution of PSP family kits is completed and benefited 25,000 persons.

• Volunteers and PMI staff have been trained. • “Call In” radio programmes have been on the air with

• An Australian RC delegate has been in the country for past 10 weeks and re-evaluated the situation of blood services in Banda Aceh and made a number of recommendations for the immediate, medium and long terms.

• The Global Advisory Panel (GAP) met in early June in Jakarta to consider the national needs of the blood programme in Indonesia. As a result, a reviewed implementation plan is being developed by Australian RC and PMI, is in alignment with the conclusion and recommendations of the GAP meeting in Jakarta.

• The Italian Red Cross sent three delegates to conduct an assessment of the regional blood centres in Sigli, Lhokseumawe, and Langsa. Findings and the report are being finalized for presentation to PMI and GAP.

• Further personnel from Australian RC will be deployed to Aceh and Jakarta.

Support of HIV/AIDS programme

• An Australian RC health delegate conducted an assessment in March. As a result, the project is currently being reviewed to accommodate local needs.
