Since 2011, Jürgen Telahr has managed the development and technical design of ROSE road bikes, triathlon, trekking and e-bikes. Since 2013, Christoph Krüppel and Max Sistenich have both been responsible for the mountain bike range. Until a bike is allowed to bear the ROSE logo, it has to go through a lot of stages to prove its high quality. Once the idea and the computer simulation has become reality and the first prototypes have been built, our developers and ROSE teams test these new bikes under peak loads. The ROSE rad-net team, the LKT TEAM BRANDENBURG and the Team Stölting Service Group thus provide valuable feedback for the development of road bikes. The ROSE Vaujany fueled by ultraSPORTS team helps to get the maximum out of our mountain bikes and to make them perfectly suitable for the intended use.

All bikes that could also convince the pros then go through a torture test for two-wheelers. This includes strictest bench tests that go far beyond legal requirements, stiffness tests, material fatigue tests and overload tests – all our bikes have to be taken to their limits and beyond to prove their quality. For many years, we have been working together with the engineering and consulting office of Dirk Zedler (www.zedler.de) as well as with EFBe Prüftechnik (www.efbe.de) managed by Marcus Schröder. My name is Prof. Dr. Christof Ehrhart. I am the manager of the department for Corporate Communications and Responsibility of the mail and logistics services group Deutsche Post DHL Group. As a welcome change from working life, I like to hop on my mountain bike in my free time to recharge my batteries on forest and field paths. I don’t compromise when it comes to my bike – I rely on high-end equipment. As a confessed bike enthusiast, I also like to go on fast MTB tours with my mates. For this, I need a bike with sufficient propulsion and precise riding qualities. Whether it is my job or my hobby – I always rely on best quality.

After a bike fitting with the ROSE team, I decided for the MR. BIG. I immediately fell in love with the race-oriented riding position that is achieved through the shorter head tube and the large reach of this hardtail with 29” wheels, as well as its high stability and top equipment. As I wanted to test a completely new groupset, I chose the electronic Shimano XTR Di2 shifting system. It allows for precise and almost effortless shifting and is individually adjustable – the shifting system has even exceeded my expectations. This bike offers the best possible combination of performance and riding pleasure. As the MR. BIG is extremely versatile, it is suitable for a wide range of riding ranging from cross country through to touring.

One mountain bike is not like another – there are bikes in different travel and weight classes, designed for different disciplines and terrains. But what kind of MTB is right for me? What are the differences between the diverse sys-tems? Is a full-suspension bike better than a hardtail? Or should I rather go for an enduro, all mountain or cross country bike? MTB product manager Julian Pöpping knows the answers to all questions about finding the right mountain bike!

1 Full-susser or hardtail? Julian: This is a question of the intended field of use. If you rather ride in challenging terrain, a full-suspension bike – a full susser – would be advantageous. As the bike’s rear wheel is always in contact with the ground, it offers improved traction and control. The suspension system simply swallows up bumps, and even jumps are absorbed by the suspension elements.

A hardtail comes without rear suspension and is only equipped with a suspension fork. It is thus lighter and stiffer than a full-susser and as there are no moving parts and no shock at the rear stay, it also requires less maintenance.

2 27,5 inches, 27,5+ inches or 29 inches? What are the advantages and disadvantages?

Julian: MTBs with 27,5” wheels have taken on the role of 26-in bikes. Compared to 29ers they are lighter, more agile and offer great acceleration. They are the first choice for winding trails where you have to accelerate more often.

The category of 27,5”+ bikes is completely new. The wheels of those bikes correspond to a rim diameter of 27,5”, however, the rims and tyres are significantly wider. The wheels are most commonly equipped with voluminous tyres with a width of 2,6 or 2,8”. The advantages are sensational grip, great traction, high comfort and safety. Yet the wheels are slightly heavier and their handling is not as agile.

29” wheels are primarily used for short-travel bikes as well as for hardtails. Those bikes easily roll over obstacles and bumps. This increases traction, which results in faster and safer acceleration. Moreover, 29ers roll better because of their larger rotating mass. Disadvantages: a slightly higher weight and a little less agility.

3 Which bike category is right for me? Julian: This actually depends on your personal preferences. There is no right or wrong. There are great differences between the different kind of bikes, which is why you should think about the intended field of use and your preferred terrain first.

If you attach high importance to speed, like to do endurance races and mostly ride in light to medium difficult terrain, a cross-country or marathon bike will be just right for you. In this category you can find both hardtails and full-sussers, the travel ranges from 100 to 120 mm. For weight reasons, the mater-ial carbon is used quite often. In general, marathon bikes offer more comfort and more travel and can thus also be used as lightweight touring MTBs.

The rougher the trail, the more travel you should have. If you like to do sporty day tours and love to integrate narrow single-tracks into your routes, you should look for a full-suspension touring bike with a travel of 120 to 130 mm. With these light-weight touring bikes, you can even do marathons.

If you like to ride on demanding tracks with steep descents or jumps, the All Mountain category will be just right for you. Those bikes have even more reserves thanks to a travel between 130 mm and 150 millimetres. In addition, they are equipped with robust components and offer a reliable downhill performance. All-mountain bikes are true all-rounders with excellent uphill and downhill qualities.

At the extreme end of the spectrum you can find enduro, freeride and downhill bikes. Those bikes are true experts designed for use in bike parks, as well as for demanding trails and fast downhills. They impress with sensitive suspension systems, perfect traction and control. When it comes to downhill riding, modern freeride and enduro bikes almost offer the same qualities as downhill bikes. However, they are also suitable for riding up the mountains.

4 Recently, a new technology has been introduced – the “Boost Standard”. What’s that?

Julian: The Boost standard is a new axle standard. Thanks to wider hubs and a resulting wider bracing angle, the wheels are noticeably stiffer.

But no matter how much travel your prefer or which wheel size or drive concept you choose – you can live the fascination of mountain biking with all ROSE bikes!

CROSS COUNTRY

THE BIG RACE

Cross country bikes are the race bikes among MTBs, designed to ride across the country as fast as possible. They are the work tools of the pros, including the ROSE Vaujany fueled by ultraSPORTS team. Our team riders chase the title in XC races, marathons or sprints; their bikes are the smooth-running race hardtails MR. BIG and PSYCHO PATH as well as the potent race full-susser THRILL HILL. However, even if you are part of the large pack of riders somewhere between relaxed evening rides and tough races, a XC bike will be just the right choice. The two hardtails THE UPRISING with 29” wheels for best running and our agile 27,5” bike COUNT SOLO represent the fascination of mountain biking just as well as our marathon full-suspension bike DR. Z. Once you are driven by the chase for the ideal line, it’s hard to quit!


DAMPED – A FLYING VISIT OF THE ROCKSHOX SET-UP CAMP

There has to be a good reason to get a reporter like me away from his local domain and to tempt him to travel to the Mediterranean coast around thousand kilometres away. Even though there was only limited leaked information, the words “secret test rides” murmured to me in confidence left me no other choice than travelling southwards and finding out more on behalf of Cycle Stories…

Fog is slowly setting into the mountains. I can only make out the silhouette of the trees. The old military buildings look threatening. A shiver is running down my spine. Actually, I’m in Finale Ligure in Bella Italia. Okay great, this is the place I was supposed to go. In this deserted region I have a conspiratorial appointment in my position as a tireless reporter. An appointment with Max Sistenich, ROSE developer for mountain bikes. I’m irritated and kick something white into a juniper bush with my worn out slippers. But hang on, what’s that?

A note? Curiously, I fish the wadded piece of paper out of the bush to take a closer look at it. All I can see are mysterious abbreviations: MM, ML, MH – SAG 30% - METRIC SIZING… I don’t have the foggiest idea of what this could mean. Are these the coordinates of a secret rocket launching site? A special recipe for date rape drugs? A decryption riddle?

Suddenly I’m flinching. A hand lays down on my shoulder. “Have you found something interesting, sport?”, a deep voice says with a snarl. “I think that’s mine!”

“Er, yes”, I stammer, “that may be. It just laid here on the ground and I wanted to destroy it, well, to swallow it up…” “That won’t be necessary”, the person behind me says with a laugh. “I’m Max, we have got an appointment!” That’s taken a load off my mind. “…and by the way: Italy has far more to offer when it comes to culinary delights!” “What exactly

are we doing here or what are YOU doing here?”, I try to transform my regained professionalism into editorially useful input. “We are working on the rear shock setups for our new mountain bikes!”, Max blurts straight out. I look surprised. “Here on top of the mountain? How come?” “Come, I’ll show you”, Max answers. “Just grab the GRANITE CHIEF over there and stay close to my rear wheel!”

No sooner said than done, I follow Max onto the trail. Let’s keep it short: The following descent into hell from the NATO base can surely be found as a fail video online on bike-channel.tv soon. Title: Worst Rider EVER. Starring me.

Three-quarters of an hour and a painful mountain bike lesson later, we are sitting on the terrace of a little pizzeria located directly at the wonderful beach promenade of Finale Ligure.

While I’m trying to find an almost bearable position for my tortured limbs and to look somehow relaxed, I ask the person opposite me: “That’s what you call work?” “Exactly”, Max says with a smile, “however, it is more than that. We are searching for the right setup for the three new MTB full-sussers ROOT MILLER, GRANITE CHIEF and PIKES PEAK.” “And what does that mean?”, I reply. “Every time a new full-suspension frame or a new rear shock generation is launched”, Max explains, “the rear suspension performance must be precisely adapted to the frame and its kinematics. To do so, several different parameters are defined beforehand such as compression,

rebound and progression. This is how we choose a basic setup which is then perfectly adapted to the bike.”

“And this is what you do for all your bikes?”, I dig deeper. “Exactly,” Max continues. “The basic setup of the suspen-sion elements is adapted to the intended use of the bike: Enduro bikes like the PIKES PEAK for instance need more suspension progression to prevent the elements from bottoming out. A touring rider on the GRANITE CHIEF however would need less progression yet more compression to avoid a bobbing of the suspension elements. Here, it is all about

using the full range of travel. As those bikes are not subject to stresses as high as for enduro bikes, the suspension elements are really unlikely to bottom out.

When time is your enemy, you need a bike like the AERO FLYER. This high-end triathlon bike was developed to look as if made from one piece. Stem, handlebar and fork form one entity and represent the core of this powerhouse. An “invisible” cable routing was realized at the cockpit so that neither the bike’s aerodynamics nor its look will suffer from cables in the wind.
