Tips and Best Practices for Bicycle Friendly Businesses
Offer Bicycle Parking
Install bicycle parking in well-lit, highly visible areas. If that's not possible allow employees to bring their bikes inside.
About eight to twelve bicycles can park in the same amount of space as one car.
One parking option is bike lockers.Choose the best option for your business
when you look for bicycle parking.
Install Showers
Install showers if your business doesn't already have them, or work with local fitness centers to offer shower-only or discounted membershipsIf your business requires formal attire some employees may not be sure how they can do that and bike to work. Offer storage so employees can bring a week's worth of clothing to change into after arriving at work.
Offer incentives to employees who pledge to bike to work.
The following slides have some ideas of incentives you could offer
Bicycle Commuter Incentive Program
Donate money to a charity for every mile your employees bike
Offer flextime or a fifteen-minute grace period for bicycle commuters.
Provide some company owned bicycles for employees to use on short trips or until they can buy their own bike.
Use the Bicycle commuter tax provision to offer reimbursement for bicycle expenses
Make sure your employees can get home safely by offering a guaranteed ride.
Bad weather, flat tires, or emergencies can make a bicycle inconvenient for getting home.
Offer a “Guaranteed Ride Home” Program
Offer Lunch & Learn workshops to inform employees about the benefits of bicycle commuting, plans for how to begin a bicycle commute, bicycle maintenance, and bicycle safety
Educate your Employees about the benefits of bicycle commuting
Create a Bike-Buddy Program
If a couple employees can commute together they will be more likely to do so.
Create ads for employees to get in touch with each other to begin bicycle commuting together.
Help new commuters find routes
Bike routes are usually much different than routes for cars, so keep that in mind when planning a bicycle commuter route.
Use local maps to help new commuters find routes that will work well for them.
Participate in Bike to Work Week
Getting involved in Bike to Work Week is a great way to jump start your bicycle commuter program. Encourage your employees to register for Bike to Work Week and offer incentives to those who participate. Create your own events for Bike to Work Week as well.
