How……will you use the award

money?• The award money will fund

the purchase of mountain bikes along with certain gear such as helmets, lights, uniforms and walkie-talkies.

• The award money will also sponsor the training of University Police officers to become certified in bike patrol. The training program is offered through the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council.

…will this benefit the Clark community?

• The bike patrol unit will have 3 major benefits: Environmental, Safety and Community.

Environmental Benefits

• By driving less and biking more there will be a sharp decrease in the amount of carbon dioxide emissions and help towards fighting global climate change.

• In the 2010 College Sustainability Report Card, Clark’s only grade of “C” was in the transportation category. As a form of sustainable transportation, a bike patrol unit will help improve this grade.

Have you ever seen U.P. cars idling in a parking lot?

Safety Benefits• The University Police cars are restricted to the

streets along the perimeter of the Clark campus, bikes would allow U.P. to continue patrolling the perimeter AND access the interior of the campus where students live.

• Officers will be capable of helping students and can respond quickly to emergencies such as first-aid, robbery, assault or burglary.

• After the bike patrol unit has been established, it will be possible to provide a bike safety course to teach students, faculty and staff how to safely ride their bikes in traffic and how to prevent bike theft on campus.

Page 5: Bike Patrol Unit

Community Benefits• University Police on bikes will be more

approachable to students.• U.P.'s visibility will provide an increased sense

of security for members of the Clark community.
