Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, unpredictable disease of the central nervous system (the brain, optic nerves, and spinal cord). It is thought to be an autoimmune disorder. This means the immune system incorrectly attacks the person’s healthy tissue. MS can cause blurred vision, loss of balance, poor coordination, slurred speech, tremors, numbness, extreme fatigue, problems with memory and concentration, paralysis, blindness, and more. Theseproblems may be permanent or may come and go. Most people living with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20-50, with more than three times as many women as men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 400,000 people in the U.S., and 2.5 million worldwide.

The New York City Chapter of the National MS Society is committed tohelping the thousands of New Yorkers impacted by MS continue moving their lives forward. The chapter raises funds locally to support the Society’s critical research initiatives and to provide hundreds ofcomprehensive support services andeducational programs to people living with MS, their family and friends.

Early and ongoing treatment with FDA-approved therapy can make a difference for people with multiple sclerosis. To learn about the options, individuals should talk to their health care professionals and contact the National MS Society atnationalMSsociety.org or 1-800-344-4867.

FUNDRAISING 101Set a goal. All participants, regardless of age, are required to raise aminimum of $100 (this is separate from the registration fee) bySeptember 18 in order to receive your rider packet and bib in the mail – both are needed to participate. If you do not raise the minimum amount by September 18, you will need to attend a rider check-in prior to the day of the ride.

Set up your online fundraising campaign by personalizing your Web site and sending e-mails from your Participant Center online atwww.bikeMSnyc.org. Be sure to share why you are riding on both your Web site and in your e-mails.

Kick off your fundraising by making a personal donation. When yourdonors see that you are financially committed to the cause, they willsupport it too. After you have sponsored yourself, ask everyone you know to support your efforts to join the movement towards a world free of MS.

Plan a fundraising event!Fundraising events are a popular way for individuals and teams to meet their fundraising goals. Fundraising events may include wine and cheese parties, silent auctions, date auctions or garage sales. Many local restaurants will host a fundraiser by contributing a percentage of their sales from a specific night to you. In most cases, they will only require that you invite guests to the restaurant, and notify them of your party’s affiliation with the Society. Contact your favorite eatery to see if they will contribute to your fundraising success!

The New York City Chapter can support your fundraising events in the following ways:> We will provide materials about multiple sclerosis, and the Society. It is very important to remember to incorporate the mission of a world free of MS into your event.> We will provide the Bike MS logo for your events (within our branding guidelines). Please note all logo usage must be pre-approved by society staff.> A staff member may be able to attend your event.

For more information, view our third party event information at www.msnyc.org.

Double your donations with matching giftsThe Society appreciates the generous gifts from all of our supporters, and we appreciate it even more when those gifts are doubled! Many companiesoffer employees a matching gift benefit that doubles, or in some cases, triples, your gift to the National MS Society. By participating in these programs, you and your sponsors can double your dollars and significantly increase your contribution. Look up companies that participate in matching gift programs by visiting www.matchinggift.com.

Companies have various methods by which you can submit your matching gift request — online forms, automated phone systems or a paper form that you submit to the National MS Society when you turn in your donations. Contact your company’s human resources office to find out what youroptions are, and be sure to ask your donors to do the same. They will give you a matching gift application; just fill it out and send it to us, we will handle the rest of the application process.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSEVENT INFORMATION:

Where can I park on the day of Bike MS?You can find parking lot locations by neighborhood and estimated costs at http://nyc.bestparking.com. What do I do if I get a flat tire?We highly encourage all participants to know basic safety and repair skills, including fixing a flat tire.
