Idealist doctrine has it that the verbs ‘to live’and ‘to dream’are at every point synonymous Jorge Luis Borges, The Zahir

To understand who we are, we need to delve into the events that shaped our national identity

Always try to look over the rim of your tea cup

Art and culture are ways in which we give meaning to our existence. By studying the stories we tell and retell, in books but also online, I seek insight into human signification

Communication seems so straightforward, but how can things as simple as make people change their minds and alter their behaviour?

Each of us is made up Ian Hacking

I have always been fascinated by the question of how commu

nication enables people and organisations to persuade others

to behave in a certain way. Communication can be surprising

ly powerful, but its impact generally depends on a number

of factors that relate to human interaction and psychological

processes. At Radboud University, our staff and students are

dedicated to measuring this impact, and to understanding

the underlying processes. The excellent facilities, the positive

studentstaff interaction, and our international network

help us to achieve our goals of understanding the impact of

human communication at the level of the individual, groups,

and society.

A little over a year ago, I started working on my PhD thesis at

Radboud University. My project, embedded in the Depart

ments of History and Philosophy, studies practices of identity

construction in Dutch state reformatories for girls (18581975).

Combining theory and approaches from both disciplines, I

investigate the way in which identity is not just “there”, but

rather is something that is made through practices. This com

bination of disciplines opens up new and exciting areas of

inquiry. Moreover, the ability to exchange ideas with experts

from different fields helps me develop my own thinking and

certainly benefits my research.

Having carried out PhD research on medieval divination

at Leiden University, I transferred to Radboud University

Nijmegen in 2003, where I expanded my interests to include

the study of magic. In 2010 I accepted a visiting scholarship

at the International Consortium for Research in the Huma

nities at Erlangen University to investigate dream divination

and mantic alphabets, after which I returned to Nijmegen to

commence a postdoctoral research fellowship. In between

research trips and presentations at institutions from the

USA to China, it is a pleasure to work at a university that

facilitates and promotes individual research projects, and that

encourages researchers to integrate scholarly interests in

their teaching.

research fellow at Radboud University Nijmegen.

I joined the Radboud University community in 2002, following

appointments at universities elsewhere in the Netherlands

and abroad. Here, I found a stimulating environment in which

to conduct my research on rewriting by women and explore

how women retell old stories in new forms and in new con

texts, especially online. In Nijmegen we truly value teaching,

care deeply for our students, and foster innovative research

through interdisciplinary research groups, for instance the In

stitute for Gender Studies with which I am affiliated. As chair

of the Internationalisation Committee I am strongly commit

ted to an international climate of scholarly exchange.

I specialise in the Sociology of the Family, which is why I am

very interested in studying family formation. While I was doing

my Bachelor’s in Sociology, one of my professors kept telling me

that it is important to ‘look over the rim of the tea cup’ now and

then if you want to be creative and successful. Radboud Univer

sity gives me the opportunity to work in a group of researchers

with different academic backgrounds. This provides me with

the unique opportunity to broaden my views on the process

of family formation and helps me create new ideas. Now I am

working on a research project together with two other PhD

candidates from different countries and with different acade

mic backgrounds, analysing the effects of family and gender

systems, as well as spousal and kin relationships, on people’s

fertility behaviour in different European regions over different

periods of time.

I am associate professor of Early Modern Dutch Literature,

my main passion being the poetry of the true Dutch greats,

such as Vondel and Tollens. Last year I was awarded a Vidi

grant by NWO to do research on Dutch national identity

formation between 1648 and 1815. As part of this project,

I am studying how war and peace texts play an important role

in fostering sociocultural solidarity and promoting a spirit of

patriotism. Working at Radboud University makes me feel at

home in doing research: there is a lot of room for initiative,

and the smallscale setting really enables you to put your

plans into practice. Furthermore, researchers receive well

organised and highly professional support in managing their

projects.
