“Your time islimited...… so don’t waste it livingsomeone else’s life”

said Steve Jobs. I wonder how long it took him to realise thisbefore his life came to an end?

And I wonder how many of us are actually guilty of this in oneway or another? It’s so easy to get wrapped up in the needs ofday to day life that you don’t stop to look around you and seewhat you are blessed with, or indeed how you actually got towhere you are.

You may not be living in a way that is true to yourself and whilstit might not matter right now, eventually your very self willerode away so that you, at worse, forget who you really are,and at best live a life that doesn’t fulfil you.

Without casting responsibility and sense totally adrift, why notspend some time with a pen and a pad and just doodle. Drawor write whatever comes to mind about your life. Let it allflow—nothing is right or wrong—feelings, facts and figures. You’ll end up with a picturethat might surprise you.

One inarguable fact is thatwe can only be sure of thevery moment so grab yourswith both hands and jollywell live it in the way thatYOU want to live it!

Much love until next monthCoralie and Sean x

If the suggestion of a trip to the seaside, afarm or swimming is greeted withexclamations of ‘Oh no!’ in your housethis May Bank Holiday, then you, like me,might find yourself thinking back to thegood old days when things like that wereconsidered fun.

Instead of beating yourself up as a parent, wondering where it all went wrong, theanswer may lie in screen-based research. It seems that frequent screen changes inchildren’s TV programmes are used as atool to maintain young children’s interest.

A consequence of this is almost speedingup life itself so that a trip to the seasideor a farm on the TV is so fast actionedthat the reality appears slow and boringby comparison. TV and screen time arelimited in our house, although my 9 year

old has cleverly found ways to circumventthis with an array of Minecrafthomework, from designing a fairgroundride, to making an Egyptian tomb or toy!We live in a computer and screen-basedworld where computers undeniably makeour life easier and enhance it in manyways, but are a poor substitute forchildren learning in a hands-on way. Theyprovide little, if any, enrichment for thesenses, the gateway to all learning, andno food for the soul.

Technology is such a huge part of ourlives that we positively need to embraceit, but setting limits is clearly important ascarefree time spent exploring outdoors, running vigorously and playing are key tothe development of well-roundedchildren and fighting the obesity battle.

With life itself so fast paced now, and theimmediacy provided by social networkingand other media priming children, andadults, to expect everything immediately, you can’t beat the feeling of releaseprovided by exploring how a wormmoves, discovering a new shoot, mixingup a witches potion, rolling down a grassybank, playing hide and seek or buildingdens.

Being outdoors and vigorous play are notonly good for the body and soul but alsofree. May is a great time to enjoy thegreat outdoors together as a family so besure to get outdoors this half term, wallow in the weather and find some Maymojo!

Sensei SaysSensei Rob Wood is a Fourth Dan in Goju-Ryu Karateand has taught children and adults for over 20 yearsin his dojo in the UK South Coast.

Is Karate just for Fighters?

I like to think of Karate being a paththat everyone can or maybe shouldtake. Clearly I’m bias, but thebenefits are immense and thefighting aspect is just a single entityin a huge collection of the Martial Artskill.

Many of the people I take on asstudents have varying degrees ofjustification for starting out.

Living in a part of the country wherethe Navy has a big connection withmany families appears to attractyoungsters that simply need a littlediscipline in their lives that may becontributed to Mums or Dads beingaway on service duty.

I’m not implying that Servicemenchildren are unruly, but I like to thinkthat it fills a gap in their lives wherethey have the opportunity to releasesome physical pressure, have funwith other children and understandthe importance of respect for otherinside a disciplined environment.

Understandably, when we begin togo through the age ranges I seevarying degrees of reasons forjoining. Some enjoy the wholeatmosphere of meeting likemindedteenagers whilst sadly there arethose that are being bullied ineveryday life.

The bully victims are the ones thatreally strike a chord with me. It’sunnecessary in society andabsolutely unforgivable that a personis forced to find ways of makingphysical aggression stop.Needless to say, Karate is not justabout facing physical violencephysically. The installation ofconfidence is a huge by-product ofbeing taught. Let’s face it, a

confident and assertive person is farmore unlikely to be a “target” for theundesirables in the world so ensuringmy students can confidently assertthemselves respectfully to peers andadults will forever stand them ingood stead right the way throughlife.

So, the fighting (Kumite) side of whatwe do… personally it’s the part Iactually enjoy the most right now.The reason I say “right now” is thatover a long period of time, I, like somany others find training runs intrends. For a couple of years I gettotally absorbed in Kumite but then Ihave a transition to Kata and that willbecome my passion for a time. Thiscould then be followed bygroundwork, pad work etc. It needsto be highlighted that, although oneaspect becomes my focus, it by nomeans makes the other aspects oftraining are less enjoyable or gounattended, it just means that whenwe cover those parts in class, itactually just makes the adrenalineget going quicker!

Obviously there are students thatonly join the dojo to learn to fight(for all the right reasons of course!)and that’s fine. To be quite honest, most of them don’t appreciate theeffort it takes to even become areasonable fighter and most will fallby the wayside in the process (or finda different part that appeals tothem). I’m assuming that somereaders may have concerns thatthose “fighters” may be too physicalon those that aren’t quite intoKumite as others and thereforemight become swamped by thoseoverzealous students. To be honest,if the respect foundation isadministered correctly from day 1then this is never a problem.

Students understand that whenfacing an opponent of junior grade /ability, they should nurture them, build their confidence and becompassionate in their approach. Allthese things go into making a greatpupil and decent person. That said, when students face anequal adversary and the friendship isfirmly in place, stand back and watchthe fireworks!

Looking back on my earlier yearstraining, friends and I often had somepretty horrific sessions and it wasinevitable that there were going tobe some injuries I’d rather spare youthe details of. At the end of itthough, we’d have a laugh, shrug itoff and wait for the next session.

So is Karate just for fighters?...absolutely not. You can take whatyou need from a dojo, respect, discipline, fitness, sport, confidence, social interaction and life skills.

LEARN TO LET GO

Remarkable Relationships

Letting go allows life to flowbetter, to be able to see what isbefore us and move through itrather than holding on to thingsfrom the past that no longerserve us. For so many years Iwent through my life totallyattached to the outcome. It wasalmost like I had the whole of mylife mapped out in my mind andall I had to do was get to the end.

I woke up the day an old friendasked me if I liked my life and didI want to be living it when I wassixty? The answer was no.

I realised that I could endure lifeand get to the end or I could liveit, moment to moment. I thinkmany people endure life and miss

out on the magic. I often workwith people who have for manyyears just stuck at what they hateso that they can get toretirement and then enjoy life. However they realise that thatmeans they will miss out on mostof their life and then commit tochange.

And that’s great, if you see it anddecide you want the magic.Trouble is if you do not make thatchange and continue to ‘stick atit’ you do not fully live for overtwo thirds of your life. And bythe time you get to that last third(if you’re lucky!) you are soexhausted from the slog of lifewith no magic that it all feels toolate.

For me since leaving behind thelife I did not like my life has beenvery much like a roller coaster. And that is the magic. I am aliveto both the ecstatic joys and theblack times of sadness. And toenjoy the magic you need both.Sure you can go through life on aflat-line – no highs no lows butthat is rather like a living death.Life is supposed to have bothhighs and lows, without a lowyou would not even know thehighs when they came along.

Personally, for me the rollercoaster is an odd analogybecause I actually hate them. Many years ago we were at anamusement park in Spain and afriend went on the corkscrew

rollercoaster. Shecame off with thebiggest smile on herface saying “You haveto ride it – it iswonderful!”. For somereason in that momentI forgot (caught up byher enthusiasm) that Iactually hated rollercoasters and gaily gotstrapped into the ride.

It was awful!

But - and this is the bigbut, it taught me ahuge lesson. Becauseafter I got off andcomplained loudly howawful it was she asked:

Page 13: Big Voice in Whiteley May 2015

13

“Did you let go?”

“Let go, let go?” I replied, ‘Areyou crazy?”

“Nope” she said. “The magic ofthe roller coaster is to let go andallow yourself to go with the ride.If you hold on you are bumpedaround all over the place, whenyou let go – that’s when the funstarts”.

That’s when the ah-ha happened.I suddenly saw that I had beentrying to ensure a ‘safe passage’.But when we do this either onthe roller coaster or in life westop the magic. Because if weonly have one way of getting tothe end, getting to the result, wedo not even see what else life hasto offer us. We get tunnel

visioned and the best of the funand opportunity – the magic -might be just beside us and wewalk straight by.

We need to be open to whatcomes, to allow it to give us evenmore than we have set ourintention for. We can have a ‘thisor something better’ attitude.

In the Passion Test we say thereare three steps to living apassionate life:

Intention – being clear on whatyou are passionate about andsetting an intention to go for it

Attention – putting your attentionon your intention, both by takingaction – action engages attention– and energetically focusing on it

too.

But the magic is the third key:

No Tension – simply knowing thatonce you have done all you can, putting your full attention on yourpassion, that you can now let go.Let it go with the feeling of it isdone – this or something better.

Now that’s magic!

It looks like a bloated beast andoccasionally it handles like one.

The Porsche Panamera’s swollenexterior is more obvious at the backof the car; it’s too bulbous to lookathletic.

But there is no disguising the ability ofthe vehicle. Two enormous tail pipesjut from the car’s stern like horizontalsteel chimneys; these more than hintat the clout that the corpulent car iscapable of serving up.

The front of the Panamera is far morePorsche-like, with its sweeping curvedbonnet and ever-so-slightly ‘hang-dog

-eyed’ headlights. Approaching itfrom the front, or when peeringdown its long, wide, snout, itsform starts to draw you in.

Through its proportions alone, the Porsche Panamera standsout clearly in its marketsegment. It measures 1931mm(76.0in) in width and 1418mm(55.8in) in height, while itsoverall length is 4970mm(195.7in). And this particular oil-burner model can be recognisedby the lettering ‘diesel’ on thefront doors.

Step inside, and the plush cabinreeks of cowhide. Thesumptuous seating-for-four andlengthy legroom, both front andrear, provide the comfort youwould expect from a car costingover £60,000.

Indeed, every Panamera, has ahigh level of standardspecification. This includesPorsche Active SuspensionManagement, which adaptshandling to suit your preferreddriving style. In ‘Normal’ modethe car delivers a blend of

performance and comfort, and thenthere’s a ‘Sport’ setting where thesetup is much firmer.

The Porsche also comes with vivid Bi-Xenon headlights; parking sensors;tyre pressure monitoring; automaticdimming rear view mirrors; touch-screen satellite navigation and audiocontrols, as well as cruise control. Inaddition, the car is available with rear-wheel drive and uses a highly efficienteight-speed automatic gearbox asstandard.

For the majority of time spent behindthe portly Porsche’s wheel, it pleaseswhen its hefty haunches launch thecar forward with as much effort as ittakes to throw a dart. The formidable

engine chucks themonster from 0 to62 mph in 6.0seconds, andcarries it to a topspeed of 161mph.The 3.0 litre sixcylinder turbodiesel car is madefor touring - thatmuch is obvious. The 100 litre fueltank and claimed44.1 mpg will takeyou across agenerous slice ofthe Europeancontinent withoutthe need to stopfor fuel. To giveyou an idea of itsrange in the UK,the Germangoliath is capable of taking fourpassengers from Lands End to LochNess without refuelling.

Performance and low consumptionare accompanied by smooth runningand low emissions. An additionalcontributing factor is the auto start/stop function, which is de rigueur.

Porsche has never suffered from apoor image. Sure, like mostautomakers, there have been tinyblips in its history, but nothingdetrimental. The arrival of thePanamera Diesel has definitelypolarised the opinion of the petrol-headed purists though. Many don’tsee it as a 'proper' Porsche, and itsstyling certainly doesn’t achieveuniversal acclaim.

That said; it’s an awesome car to golong distance travelling in with threeother’s to accompany you. You’re alsobound to get lots of looks – but notalways for the right reason.
