If you haven’t communed with your socks lately, thanked your shoes for their hard work or bowed (at least mentally) to your home in apprecia-tion, maybe it’s time to consider it.
“It is very natural for me to say thank you to the goods that support us,” says Marie Kondo, whose method of
lovingly connecting with belongings that “spark joy” and bidding a fond but fi rm farewell to the rest is popular in Japan and now catching on elsewhere.
Kondo’s book, “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing,” is a best-seller in Japan, Germany and Britain, and has recently been published in the United States. Kondo has been the subject of a movie in Japan, and the waiting list for her services, once three months long, is now so extensive that she has temporarily stopped accepting more clients.
Her “KonMarie Method,” as she calls it in the diminutive and illustration-free volume, encourages a rapid, dramatic and transformative one-time organizing event — completed methodically and lovingly in no more than six months. It’s not an
ongoing battle against clutter. Kondo sees “tidying” as a cheerful
conversation in which anything that doesn’t “spark joy” is to be touched, thanked and ceremonially sent on its way toward a better life elsewhere, where it can discover a more appreciative owner.
The result can be life-changing, she says. Clients suddenly fi nd themselves surrounded entirely by things that provide clarity, unencumbered by belongings that carry past baggage (unwanted gifts,
clothes that no longer fi t) or anxieties about the future (does anyone need more cotton swabs than there are days of the year?). Even her book, she says, should be quickly discarded when it’s no longer needed.
Part of what makes her method unusu-ally speedy is that instead of de-cluttering room by room, she tackles a household by subject, starting with what’s easiest to

Camellias make a beautiful addition to the landscape Q: I was given a camellia bush
as a holiday gift. It is so beautiful, but I am not sure where to plant it. Should I plant it or leave it in the pot?
A: Camellias are such a
beautiful addition to the landscape, I strongly encour-age you to plant it. But let’s make sure you put the right plant in the right place.
They prefer fertile, well-drained soil high in organic matter with a slightly acidic pH of 5- 6.5. You can amend your soil to provide more organic matter if it is really sandy.
Camellias do best in partially shady locations with good air fl ow. If the shade is too dense, the foliage will become sparse and they won’t fl ower well. The plants are cold-hardy. The best time to plant camellias is from November to February.
If you are amending the soil, add compost or manure to the entire bed. Then, dig a hole two times wider than the plant’s root ball. When planted, the

Q: I would like your opinion on these cocktail glasses that
have been in my family for at least 40 years. I have seven of them, though I am sure they started out as a set of eight, or
maybe even 12, with some being lost or broken over the years. They are 5½ inches tall and 3 inches wide. They have gold trim around the tops, and each depicts a beauti-ful songbird, such as a cardi-
nal, blue jay, oriole, etc. Each has wonderful detail to the point where I almost think they were hand-painted. I have checked them over carefully and cannot fi nd any names or makers marks at all. The only words are the names of the bird shown.
Since they are a family heirloom, I have no interest in selling them, but I am curious as to whether they were mass-pro-duced, or if they strike you as rare or special in any way. I have never seen anything like them.
— J., Dunnellon
A: I suspect these glasses will cause quite a few “Remem-
ber When” moments. They are in the Character and Promo-tional Glasses collecting category. Not long after World War I, glasses featuring comic and radio characters were offered as premiums. Shortly, they were being used to adver-tise a wide variety of commer-cial products.
Yes, you are correct, the water glasses have the look of hand-painting. In the late 1930s, a technique called silk screening was developed. A thick paste-like substance was forced through a cloth stencil onto the
glass, then placed in a kiln for fusing. The process gave the look and color of hand-painting, and could be produced in huge quantities. Food companies packaged their products in promotional glassware for use when empty. The bird drinking glasses you have likely were associated with some Audubon or state bird series.

Q: We have some nice furni-ture which is authentic
Victorian, with the name engraved into the back of the legs. We could not have afford-
ed it if we had been required to pay full price.
In 2005, we needed a new roof, and the roofer did a lousy job. While we were away a few days, we had big rain and a bigger leak! The upholstery on the couch, matching chair and a rocker was damaged. The wood fi nish was also wet, and discol-ored the carpet. We could not fi nd a reputable upholsterer, so we used the only one in town. He apparently added stuffi ng to the bottoms of the couch and chair, which are now bulging low enough to be seen from across the room, and are already partially torn or pulled away from the frame. Can you recommend a suitable someone to repair this for us? We really hope so.
Our second problem is our pump organ, dated 1861. It is an upright, and has a nice mirror with carved woodwork. I do not know if insects have damaged the bellows, or if age has caused them to begin to deteriorate. We have had it since 1964. It had only one owner-player when we purchased it. A gentleman on a mountain in South Carolina had purchased it and put it in his church where he played it. When the church purchased a
new “jazzy” piano, he carried it home. When he died, the organ and the mountain cabin became property of a nephew, a pastor, who wanted to sell it as he planned to use the cabin as a retreat for the youth of his church. He sold it to my hus-band, a pastor, at an unbeliev-ably low price. We sincerely hope you can help us fi nd someone to do this.
— J.H., Palatka

Q: I noticed that 10 or 12 branches of my persimmon
tree have been cut and are on the ground. They are about 2 feet in length and look like they have been clipped. I didn’t prune them off. Do you know what hap-pened?
A: Persimmons are wonderful fruit trees that are easy to
grow. They need plenty of sun and regular irrigation to produce
consistent crops of delicious orange fruits. There are many different varieties of persim-mons to choose from. Gardeners can select astringent varieties such as Hachiya, Tanenash or Saigo. Astringent varieties must be eaten when the fruit is completely soft, or they are inedible. Non-astringent varieties like Fuyu, Jiro and Izu
can be eaten when the fruit is fi rm or soft; either way, they are delicious.
One of the reasons folks love to grow persimmons is because they have so few problems. Once established, they hold their crops well, and do not need too much extra care. There is, however, a beetle called the twig girdler that will prune tips of branches off the tree during the winter and early spring. The adult female beetle lays her egg on the tip of the branch, then gnaws the branch off. The cut is so clean it
looks like someone took pruning shears to it. Girdled limbs break and fall to the ground, but the damage is usually not life-threat-ening to healthy trees. Pruning dead or dying branches back to healthy wood usually is all that’s required. For more information about fruit trees and problems with fruit trees, contact the Marion County Master Garden-ers at 671-8400 .

DEED TRANSFERS TIDY: Key to organizing is storing things mostly in drawerspart with. So, all the clothes, then all the books, then documents, then miscellany and, last and most diffi cult, photos and mementos.
Instead of deciding what to discard, she says, the focus should be on what to keep: which few things spark suffi cient joy or are truly necessary.
How to contend with family members unready to join in the celebratory purge?
If possible, carry the bags out of the house yourself. “There’s no need to let your family know the details of what you throw out or donate,” she writes, although she advises against secretly disposing of other people’s things. “You can leave communal spaces to the end. The fi rst step is to confront your own stuff.”
After joyfully relegating mountains of unneeded or unloved belongings to the trash or charity, she then turns to organizing what’s left.
The key, she says, is storing things mostly in drawers, arranged so that everything can be seen at a glance and nothing is stacked, a practice decidedly unkind to items at the bottom.
So T-shirts and socks (the ones you’ve kept because they make you happy) are rolled — no painfully balled-up socks with moaning elastic here — and beautifully arranged like sushi in a bento box.
Closets are meticulous-ly arranged to fi t every-
thing from electric fans (at the bottom) and spare blankets (on top) to carefully arranged clear drawers of beloved belongings and a shelf or two with a few joy-spark-ing books.
Papers and documents — there won’t be many since few are truly necessary and they generally hold so little joy — are likewise fi led and not stacked.
Kondo says she has been obsessed with “tidying” since she was 5, opting to arrange shoes and pencils in school when other kids played in the playground. She began communing with her belongings in high school and, after years of work at a Shinto shrine, realized her calling as a professional consultant on attaining the joy of minimalism.
“The inside of a house or apartment after de-cluttering has much in common with a Shinto shrine ... a place where there are no unnecessary things, and our thoughts become clear. It is the place where we appreci-ate all the things that support us,” she says. “It is where we review and rethink about ourselves.”

Q: I plan to remodel my bathroom sometime
next year. For now, I’m just looking at fi xtures and getting a little confused. I really like the idea of having a “glass” bathroom sink, but
need help choosing the right one. Is glass a good material choice, and do glass sinks come in different styles, or just the traditional bowl-type design?
— Bernie, Rhode Island
A: Since glass is one of the most versatile
materials you can work
with, you’ll have a wide variety of sizes, shapes, colors, textures and “styles” to choose from. Along with natural beauty, glass sinks are carefully crafted for strength and durability, as well. So, a quality glass sink can be the focal point of any bath-room. To make things easy, here’s three basic glass sink styles you can look into, starting from the bottom up:1. UNDERMOUNT: Mounts under the vanity counter-top and can be lighted from below to create a very dramatic look.2. COUNTERTOP: This style is not only the sink, it can be the countertop as well, with the bowl seamlessly included in the design.3. ABOVE-COUNTER: This is
where part or all of the glass-sink vessel is installed above the vanity countertop.
Stick to these three easy choices and you’ll be able to see through all your glass sink confusion!

WHEN SELLING OR BUYINGREAL ESTATE, REMEMBER TOCONTACT A REALTOR® FORPROFESSIONAL SERVICES.
Randy Alvord2014 PRESIDENTOCALA/MARION COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®
www.OMCAR.com
Last week the Ocala/Marion County Association of Realtors® held their annual installation luncheon where
the incoming Association President (Donna Dunaway) and the incoming MLS President (Gayle Lowry) were
sworn into office commencing 1 January 2015 along with the rest of the leadership team and the two boards
of directors. Of course I took the opportunity to give a farewell speech and one of the things I mentioned that I
would miss is writing a letter for the Star Banner every week (yes I know I missed a couple of weeks, my seven
faithful readers pointed that out to me). I tried this past year to give you one person’s point of view, most people
would call that an opinion, but I am emphasizing the words point of view. Past presidents have written about
everything from winterizing your home, landscaping tips and I even remember one where they wrote about not
keeping your dog chained to a tree. All of these are important topics, I realize, but I wanted to be a little more
thought provoking and I certainly hope I accomplished that throughout the year.
I wanted to share with you some good news. This past week in Washington both the Senate and the House of
Representatives passed legislation extending the mortgage debt relief for homeowners who sold their homes in
2014 that owed more than house sold for. This is only retroactive for 2014 but it is a good start. Also included
in the bill are one year retroactive extensions of the 15 year depreciation schedule for leasehold improvements
and the deduction of mortgage insurance premiums along with a few other important tax changes relative to
property owners.
I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and you all are in great hands with the incoming leadership. It was
an honor serving as President of the Ocala/Marion County Association of Realtors® and I hope to see all of you
in our wonderful community.
Professionally…and then some!Randall Alvord, President

The holidays are a time of magic, and mania, aren’t they? Take a moment to
stop and refuel yourself. Here are my top fi ve re-fresh strategies:REFRESH 1: POUR YOURSELF A CUP OF CHEER: When you’ve wrung the last ounce of energy from your hard-working holiday-making self, what is your favorite beverage to indulge in? Mine is hot cocoa .
Filling yourself with your favorite beverage is only half the fun. The other is enjoying the indulgence of serving it up in a beautiful mug or glass, stirring things up with a sweet little spoon, perhaps balancing it all on a lovely plate. REFRESH 2: GET YOUR BEAUTY SLEEP: A good night’s sleep does wonders for our physical and mental well-being.
I am convinced that a good night’s sleep starts with the sheets. I like high-quality cotton sheets that are freshly ironed (yes, I literally iron my sheets, and yes, I can see you rolling your eyes right now!). There is something magical to me about slipping into those crisp, soft sheets. Next, I like to pile up my bed with layers of blankets. I sleep best when the room is chilly, buried under a stack of blankets. REFRESH 3: INDULGE IN SOME EYE CANDY: Those of us who love beautiful spaces need to indulge ourselves in books and magazines and Pinterest boards fi lled with decorating eye candy, don’t we? These beautiful tomes, fi lled with gorgeous photos of homes we’d love to live in, restore our creativity and
rekindle our passion to feather our own nests.
My prepare-myself-for-the-world morning ritual
includes 30 minutes with a decorating book. Bundled up under a throw, cup of coffee in hand, I join homeowners and designers on their journeys to make their spaces beautiful. Right now, my decorating book faves are:
“One Man’s Folly: The ■
Exceptional Houses of Furlow Gatewood,” by Julia Reed
Besides having a fabulous name, Furlow Gatewood has a singular ability to use antiques in his decor so they look fresh, not like your grandmother’s parlor. Furlow is an antique deal-er in New York who refers to his homes as “laboratories.” One of the tips I gained from Furlow was to use light colors with my antiques so they don’t look stale and stuffy.
“Veranda A Passion for ■
Living: Houses of Style and Inspiration,” by Carolyn Englefi eld
I will never live in a luxurious European home. But I can visit them every day through indulgent books like this one. Chock full of take-me-away photos, the book features 30 stun-ning homes in France, Italy, Switzerland and Sweden. Threaded throughout the photos are tips from top design-ers on how to create drool-worthy interiors.
REFRESH 4: TREAT YOURSELF TO LUXURIOUS BATH PRODUCTS: Give yourself a mini spa break with some luxurious bath products. It may be as simple as keeping some lovely scented hand cream in your purse to keep those dry winter hands happy. Or a favorite body butter to use after you shower to hydrate and heal your body, mind and spirit.
Since I end every day with a long, indulgent soak in the tub, I’m always on the lookout for fabulous bath products. Right now I’m hook-line-and-sinker in love with Lollia prod-ucts.
I discovered them at market a few years ago, and knew I had to start carrying them at Nell Hill’s. My favorite scents are the Relax foaming bath and the Calm hand cream.
REFRESH 5: NOSH ON SOME YUMMIES: When I’m bone-dead tired from the holiday crazies, I crave baked goods. Rich, gooey, fl akey, sinfully high-calo-rie croissants and eclairs and cookies and cakes and pies and ... oh my good-ness, I got carried away there.
My friend, Tracy, who owns the French Bee Bakery in Parkville, Missouri, keeps me supplied with the best pastries in the world. I fi ll up a box with an assort-ment of bite-sized treats to give to guests when I entertain.
What is your favorite binge food, the little treat you give yourself when you are ready to indulge?

Q: We have had such a bad time this year with
the power going off and staying off that I’ve decided to buy a generator. I found so many different models. I was hoping you could provide some advice on what to buy.
A: First, you need to determine what
appliances are necessary during a power outage. In addition to lighting, you will need to know the wattage of your refrigera-tor, furnace and devices for communication, such as telephone and/or television. You always can use a battery-operated radio to keep you in-formed of changing conditions.
When a motor-operated appliance fi rst comes on, it takes an additional surge of power, known as surge wattage, until the motor is at full operating speed. An average refrigerator will need 1,600 surge watts and 800 running watts. A furnace fan rated at ½ horsepower will use 2,300 surge watts and 875 running watts. You can survive without an air conditioner, but a smaller unit rated at 24,000 BTU’s will use 6,235 surge watts and 3,750 running watts. Appliances without motors generally do not require surge wattage. For instance, an average-size fl at-screen television will use approximately 180 watts, and light bulbs will use the accumulated wattage rated for each bulb.
You simply add together the number of bulbs used. For example, two 100-watt
bulbs will use 200 watts of power. Rather than use esti-mates, you should obtain the wattage usage listed
on each appliance, add all these together and then purchase a generator that exceeds your needs.
Once you have a genera-tor, it is very important to follow all safety precau-tions. The two main safety issues are to keep the generator a safe distance from the home’s windows and doors, and do not place the unit under the roof’s vented overhangs. Never use a generator indoors. Carbon monox-ide fumes produced by a gasoline-powered motor are colorless, odorless and tasteless, but can be fatal in higher concentrations.
To operate safely, the generator needs to be connected to the main electrical system by means of a transfer switch installed by a licensed electrician. You cannot simply connect the generator to the main electric panel and then trip the main switch to “Off.” Doing this can feed high voltage back through the incoming electrical wiring to an unsuspecting utility worker once the power to your area has been restored.

Minnie Driver, who starred in the TV miniseries “The Red Tent,” has
pulled up stakes, sell-ing her Hollywood Hills home for $1.5 million.
The Spanish-style house, built in 1926 and boasting original details, features a central courtyard. Designed
for outdoor entertaining, the colorful garden courtyard has a fi replace, terra cotta pavers and accents of vintage Mexican tile.
The 3,055 square feet of
living space contains formal living and dining rooms, a sunroom offi ce, a wine cellar, three bedrooms and three
bathrooms. The breakfast area opens to a dining terrace with canyon views. Among other features are custom
woodwork, custom tile and a fi replace in the wood-beamed living room.
Driver, 44, stars in sever-al 2014 fi lms, including “Return to Zero,” “Stage Fright” and “Beyond the Lights,” as well as the TV series “About a Boy.” The actress will star next year in the cyberterrorism fi lm “A Conspiracy on Jekyll Island.” She was nominat-ed for an Oscar for her supporting role in “Good Will Hunting” (1997).
The singer-songwriter recently released “Ask Me to Dance,” her third album.
The property previously changed hands in 1998 for $775,000, public records show. Driver sold because
she bought another home in the Los Angeles area.

Comic and radio personality Adam Carolla, who stars in the recently renewed Spike TV series “Catch a Contrac-tor,” has parted with his retreat in Malibu for $3.6 million — exactly what he paid for the property in 2007.
The 1.7-acre property, with ocean, coastline and sunset views, contains a main house, a guesthouse and a swimming pool with a spa.
The 2,810 square feet of living space features vaulted ceilings, skylights and two fi replaces plus four bedrooms and four bathrooms. The master suite has a dressing area that could be used as an offi ce.
Carolla, 50, has hosted radio show turned daily podcast series “The Adam Carolla Show” since 2009. The actor-producer-writ-er’s credits include writing for “Jimmy Kimmel Live” (2003), voicing the part of Death on “Family Guy” (2000-14) and executive produc-ing “Catch a Contractor.”
