Discovery Skill 1: ASSOCIATING
•Process of connecting seemingly unrelated questions•Medici Effect – leading to Renaissance•Human Brain always associates a word to some experience.•The more diverse our experience – the more connections can the brain make.•Associating leads to generating better ideas that can be recombined.
Discovery Skill 2: QUESTIONING
“ The important and difficult job is never to find the right answers, it is to find the right question.”
- Peter Drucker
Michael Dell’s idea came from the question – why a computer costs five times as much as the sum of its parts?
To ask the questions – “Why?” , “Why not?” and “What if?” Innovative entrepreneurs challenge assumptions. Ability to hold opposing ideas to come up with a superior idea. Constraints on thinking leads to out-of –the –box-insights.
Discovery Skill 3: OBSERVING
Producing uncommon business ideas by observing common phenomena.
Observing customers, suppliers and other companies.
Discovery Skill 4 : Experimenting
Like Scientists , innovative entrepreneurs actively try out new ideas by creating prototypes and launching pilots.
Innovative entrepreneurs engaged in some form of active experimentation , whether it was a intellectual exploration.
One of the most powerful experiments innovator can engage in is living and working overseas.
Discovery Skill 5 : Networking
Devoting time and energy to finding and testing ideas through a network of diverse individuals gives a radically different perspective.
Innovative entrepreneurs go out of their way to meet people with different kind of ideas and perspective to extend their own knowledge domains.
They attend the conference like Technology, Entertainment and design (TED), Davos and the Aspen Ideas Festival.
Practice, Practice,Practice
Innovators actively engage in the Discovery skills , and they become defined by them.
They grow increasingly confident by their creative abilities.
Though innovative thinking may be innate to some, it can also be developed, strengthened through practice.
The most important skill is to practice questioning – “why” and “why not” ??
