MyFirstHOME

CathyTysonActressWhere was the family home where yougrew up and what was it like? The first home I can remember was 29 PrincesAvenue, and my mum and I lived in the atticbedsit. It seemed like it was in the heavens asyou had to climb so many stairs to get to it.We were doing a TV programme recently and Iwent back to it. It brought back so manymemories of my childhood.

What is your clearest memory of thehouse? There was a bannister and I used to slide downit. Our landlord was Mr Daniels and he wasvery kind. I was the only child in the house andthere was a fire escape at the back of thehouse that I used to stand on. They were veryhappy memories of me and my mum.

Where was the first house you boughtyourself and what did it cost?I have never bought a house but I have boughta flat. I can’t remember how much it cost butthe first flat I bought was in Camden in the 80sand I think I bought it from the money I gotfrom the film, Mona Lisa.

What made you want to buy it?I lived in it with my ex-husband. It was abasement flat and it was because of where itwas we bought it, being seen to be ‘upwardlymobile’ in Camden.

What are the important things you lookfor when buying a house? The location. I need somewhere peacefulbecause I need my sleep. I grew up in Toxtethamong all those gorgeous buildings but it wentthrough a dreadful time, and yet I have reallygood memories of it. So ‘bad areas’ or thosedeemed as such don’t put me off. But it’s goodto have a place where you feel unafraid. Myideal place would be by the sea.

Are you a DIY trier or do you leave it tothe experts?Being a single parent I have learned to do a lotlike painting my flat for myself. I have had to dothings so I’m not scared of picking up ascrewdriver.

What is the one thing you love mostabout your current home? The peace I have there. I have wardrobes thatare absolutely amazing because they go the fulllength of the wall and I can hide everythingaway! I love the serenity it gives me, I feel athome there.

DOWN on the prairie, something isstirring. A new style is comingour way faster than you can say‘Yee-ha!’ Banish that celluloidvision of tumbleweed, bunk beds

and bare board ranch houses – traditionalhome to the tough Wild West cowboy. This isa liveable look for today that embraces thesofter side of rustic, with bleached wood andcolour in woven blankets, Navajo rugs andreclaimed treasures.

“It’s a style that says ‘home’ wherever youare,” says author Fifi O’Neill, who celebratesit in her own house with folksy charm andan almost tangible welcoming atmosphere.

All the rooms in her converted 1920s barn, with its open rafters and raw wood walls, aredecorated in a subtle dove grey and chalkwhite palette.

Loosely woven linen curtains hang at thewindows, filtering the bright sunlight, andit’s the reclaimed furniture and intriguingpersonal touches collected over the yearsthat are allowed to star.

There’s no hall and the spaces flowseamlessly into one another. Everywherethere are examples of her creativity, from afake plank floor – plywood given a distressedpaint finish -– to a carved mantel as a focalpoint with a grate filled with artfullyarranged foliage and branches.

It’s a winning decor effect for those whoare on a budget (and these days who isn’t!)and attracted so many fans that Fif hasdistilled the essence into a new book,Romantic Prairie Style.

Although French-born, 20 years ago shefell in love with vast plains and the sweepinggrasslands of Canada and America, whereoriginally many European immigrantscreated humble dwellings which, dependingon their location, took on a variety ofdesigns from ranches and cabins to cottagesand farmhouses.

“Those homes all share commoncharacteristics, among them a love andrespect for traditions and honest materials, aneed for tranquility and simplicity and aspontaneity of design, be it rustic, refined orunderstated chic,” she says.

“What’s so liberating and appealing is thatprairie-style decorating doesn’t answer to aset of rules but spells freedom and creativity– the only essentials are conjuring apersonal sense of comfort and beauty. Whatcould be easier?”

Settler-style resourcefulness and necessitywork hand-in-hand in Fifi’s world.

“My own taste leans toward a refinedrusticity, a look easily accomplishedwith pre-loved pieces, whisper-softcolours, romantic accents, eloquentobjects and a ‘do it yourself ’attitude.”

Quaint shutters are made fromthe doors of an old armoire, pillow cases are hand-madefrom vintage fabrics andoutdoor metal furniture isgiven a gleaming finishwith metal paint, makingit elegant enough for abedroom.

“Peaceful, uncomplicated andcomforting, this barnis my prairie escape,my simpler life,” saysFifi. “I’m surrounded

by treasures I’ve rescued from markets andsecond-hand shops.

“If you surround yourself withthe things you love, you can’t help

but have a home in which you feelcontent.”With Fifi’s help it’s easy to create

your own little house on the prairie.

RUSTIC PRAIRIEThis is a down-on-the-farm look,

adaptable and versatile, which makes aneasy marriage with an existing rusticscheme.

“You don’t have to opt for a bare look,”says Fifi. “Just don’t over-clutter and keepthe palette subdued. I like to play withtextures and then add colour in accessories.”

Emulate a chic pairing of vintage andindustrial by featuring stout woodenfurniture, hessian and linen fabrics thatallow grain and texture to star and utilityaccessories such as farming tools orcraftsmen’s implements.

GUIDE ... tohome improvement

IT’S that time of year when yourlawn and hedges are growing fast.

To trim them safely, keep yourmower or hedge trimmer in

front of you, feed the power lead(if there is one) over your

shoulder, use a residual currentdevice or power breaker andwear sturdy boots or shoes,

whatever type of mower you’reusing, to protect your toes.

● IF YOU are thinking ofgetting the hammer and

nails out this weekend youmight want to think carefullybefore starting any workbecause new research revealsthat DIY disasters cost UKhomeowners a staggering

£2.1bn a year.More than 24% of those

surveyed bywww.myhammer.co.uk saidthey had experienced a DIYdisaster in the last 12 monthswhich had cost an average of£145 to put right.

With 60% of UK

homeowners planning homeimprovements they may liketo consider the advice of thosewho’ve tackled jobsthemselves in the past – 42%of those polled said theywished they’d hired atradesman before attemptingjobs themselves.

Q. What’s the difference betweencorded and cordless power tools, apart from the power lead?A. Cordless ones are moreconvenient because, providing thebattery’s charged, you can pickthem up and use them anywhere.

They’re also generally safer becausethere’s no lead, plug or mainselectricity involved (other than thecharger), but they can run out ofcharge mid-job and not all powertools come in cordless versions, sosometimes you have no choice.

DIY can be dangerous, butnot if you follow this guidefor playing safe with plugs, sockets and corded powertools.● If you’re washing downwalls in preparation fordecorating (after sanding orremoving wallpaper, forexample), turn off theelectricity at the mains firstor tape plastic bags over thesockets and switches. If youaccidentally get water intoany of them, don’t use themuntil they’ve dried out.● If you’re using cordedpower tools outside or indamp conditions, play safeand use a residual currentdevice or power breaker, which will automatically cutoff the electricity if anaccident happens or the toolmalfunctions.● Whenever you’replugging corded power toolsin, be careful not to overloadthe socket with plugs. This,of course, applies to socketsin general. And if you haveto change or check a plug, ensure that the connectionsinside are secure and theright way round and that thecord grip is tight around thelead, not the wires. Neverrewire a plug unless youknow where the wires go -a new plug should comewith a diagram.● If a cordedpower tool stopsworking, changing thefuse is the firstthing to try(after checkingthat the plughasn’t comeout of thesocket!). Withconventional plugs, you have to unscrewthe casing and carefullyprise out the fuse, but withmoulded plugs, you can onlyget to the fuse, which is easyto do - no unscrewingrequired. The fuse must, ofcourse, be the right amp forthe power tool for it to workproperly.● Whenever you’re usingan extension lead or cordedpower tool, make sure thelead is uncoiled because itcould overheat if there areknots in it. Damaged leadsmake power tools unsafe, sodon’t use them. Andremember not to adjust orclean corded power toolswhen they’re plugged in.

FOR a long time settling down was thefurthest thing from the minds ofVicky Wray and Rob Williams.Instead, the engaged couple wantedto see the world and set about

covering as many miles across the globe asthey could.

Destinations stamped on their passportsinclude Australia. But now they want ahouse of their own – and they havediscovered there’s no place like home!

Vicky, 25, and Rob, 27, have bought a homeon Gleeson’s Montreal Gardens developmentin Huyton and they used the company’s“Aspire to Own” purchase enabling schemeto do it.

The scheme saw Gleeson Homes matchthe 5% deposit the couple had worked hardto save.

Both Vicky and Rob, once they had

decided to settle down, wanted to buy theirown home close to their childhood homes inthe Huyton area.

After carefully considering other newbuild developments around Liverpool as wellas city centre apartments, they fell in lovewith Gleeson’s Montreal Gardens in Huytonwhere two, three and four bedroom homesare available from £91,995.

The couple chose the three bedroomNapoli.

Vicky says: “As a young couple we wantedto stay close to the city centre but have theinside space and garden to entertain ourfriends now and, possibly, raise a family inthe future.

“Montreal Gardens ticks all the boxes, the

buzz of Liverpool city centre is close by yetthe development has a real communityfeel.”

Vicky and Rob were determined to savefor the 5% deposit which many first timebuyers think is unachievable. Rob explains,“Once we returned from travelling we wereobviously low on funds but knew we wantedto settle down and get on the propertyladder.

“We decided to move back in with ourrespective parents instead of renting.

“This allowed us to save one wage anduse the second wage for monthly livingexpenses. By using this approach we hadour 5% deposit saved in just six months.”

Maxine Baxter, Sales Manager forGleeson Homes adds: “Vicky and Rob took avery clever approach to saving for theirdeposit and we are extremely pleased thatwe were able to match their 5% deposit pluscontribute to their legal and valuation feesthrough our Aspire scheme.

“However, we know how difficult it is foryoung people to save for a new home so wealso offer schemes which allow parents tofinancially help their kids buy their firsthome.”

Rob goes on: “We were able to move intoour new home in record time.

“We did have to forego a couple ofluxuries while we were saving but now ourmonthly mortgage repayment is cheaperthan the rent on a smaller apartment.”

And Vicky Vicky adds: “I love our newhome. As first time buyers I never thoughtwe could afford a three bedroom home withen-suite and I love the fact we can decorateit in our own style”.

Now Vicky and Rob are settled in theirnew home they are saving for their next bigadventure – their wedding and honeymoonnext summer.◆ Gleeson Sales Office & Show Homesat Montreal Gardens are open Thursdayto Monday 10am to 5pm. HAPPY HOME: Gleeson’s four-bedroom detached Baslow style home is amongproperties at Montreal Gardens

by JANET TANSLEY

ASPIRING: Vicky Wrayand Rob Williams in theirthree-bedroom home

BUYING a new house should be anexciting time, but according to one in fourhomeowners in the UK it is the moststressful thing you can do!

But don’t let stress take over – if youknow what to look out for when you areconsidering buying a property, it canmake things a lot smoother.

Specialists in property law, PaulCrowley & Co Solicitors explain a few ofthe most common problems and howthey can be avoided…

* It might seem like cutting cornerswill save you time and money, but itrarely does. Make sure you get aprofessional survey done because themortgage lender’s basic valuation is justa ‘valuation’ and is not a detailedstructural report. It is always best toidentify potential problems and repairsbefore you buy rather than after you’vemoved in.◆ It is a good idea to visit the propertyat different times of the day as it willallow you to spot something you missedon a previous viewing - such as a problemwith noisy neighbours or anti-socialbehaviour in the area. Make sure it reallyis your dream house before you make anoffer.◆ You should also make sure yourmortgage is agreed in principle beforemaking an offer – you need to be surethat you have the funding first.◆ Do your research properly about theproperty and the neighbours. Check outthe local schools, shops and otherfacilities. Always get the searches offeredby your solicitor – such as a ‘flood check’search, as this will tell you if the propertyis in a ‘flood zone’, if so it could have animpact whether or not you can obtaininsurance on the property.◆ Take time to choose a solicitor that isexperienced in conveyancing to take careof all the legal aspects of buying a house. You should do this before you even startlooking for a property, so that you don’tend up making an important decision ina rush.

So much for buying, but what aboutselling?

One of the most common issues thatcould cost you your house sale is nothaving the correct planning permissionor building regulation approval for analteration or extension.

This can be a major drawback forbuyers after a sale is agreed. They mayask you to reduce the price of theproperty as a result or even end uppulling out altogether – so make sure youdiscuss this up front.◆ If any issues are identified on thebuyer’s survey, you should also beprepared to renegotiate the sale pricerather than risk the buyer pulling outcompletely. Often this is a far morecostly option in the long term.◆ Try to be as proactive and flexible aspossible with your buyers throughout thesale process - whether that’sby filling out paper workquickly or by offering arange of differentpotential movingdates. Make sure youare as realistic aspossible about thetimes scales for yourmove too. Often whensellers do not managebuyers’ expectations, itcan lead to setbacks anddisappointment too – somake sure youcommunicatewith them well.

Driftwood, reclaimed bricks andcockleshell edgings were among theitems which featured in thedisplays. Yet you shouldn’t have tolook too far to find bits and piecesthat can add historical, elegant andquirky touches to your own garden, whatever the setting.

Second-hand shops, reclamationyards and even car boot sales canprovide an Aladdin’s cave ofunusual containers and statues, chimney pots which can be upendedto house colourful plants, quirkygarden seating and ornaments.

Old railway platform seats andseating from boats have been put touse in the past, while DIYenthusiasts have constructed seatsfeaturing little more than a shortpiece of scaffolding plank resting ontwo neat piles of old bricks. Funkybenches have been made using oldtyres at either end supporting seatsof painted scaffolding planks.

If you live near the sea, explorethe beach to search for large piecesof driftwood, or shells out of whichyou could make a feature mosaic to

hang on your house wall. Mosaicsand patterns can also be made outof pebbles or broken coloured tilesarranged Roman style.

Fallen logs can be used to edgepaths, while those on a budget maybe more inclined to go for localgravel.

Eye-catching containers can bemade out of anything you mayotherwise dump, from old food canspainted with brightly colouredweather-resistant paint, to sinkswhich can house a myriad of rockplants, and teapots, mugs and rustybuckets with holes drilled in the

bottom which can be planted up andstrategically placed to brighten upthe scene.

Old wicker baskets can also makegood plant pots, stained, varnishedand lined with black plastic, whilebroken pots can be used for adisplay of rock plants such assempervivums.

Wine aficionados who are luckyenough to have had their winedelivered in wooden boxes withlovely embossed logos shouldconsider growing salad crops inthem. See if your local winemerchant might have any boxes

spare and preserve the wood withDanish oil to weatherproof it aswell as drilling holes in the base fordrainage. Port boxes can also act asgood containers.

You can also grow crops in olddrawers, weatherproofing the woodfirst and then drilling holes fordrainage and lining the drawerswith plastic. You may also have toadd corner braces to the drawers tostop the wood from warping, butthey will make eye-catching vegcontainers.

Use your own home-grown stemsof bamboo, when the canes are

green and flexible, or red dogwood,to cut and weave into plantsupports.

If you want to create an archwhich will be smothered inflowering plants, but don’t want tospend a fortune, you can do itcheaply by bending old lengths ofmetal pipe or builders’ reinforcingbars, which will all be hidden by theclimbers.

You don’t have to go to Chelsea tofind inspiration in recycling yourjunk - just think twice beforechucking out that old chippedteapot...

WELL-KNOWN for their huge blooms in latespring and early summer, these blousyperennials will add a romantic, feminine touchto any border.

They take a couple of seasons to settledown and produce flowers, hate being movedand prefer an open sunny spot, shelteredfrom cold winds – but the reward is a vastarray of large blooms in colours from creamto deep red. The common peony, P. officinalis,is a cottage garden favourite, growing 60cm(2ft) high and producing 12cm (5in) blooms ina variety of shades, flowering in May and June. The most popular are P. lactiflora, whichflower in June. Good scented varieties includeDuchesse de Nemours or Sarah Bernhardt. For big, bold flowers, go for Bowl of Beauty, which produces pink flowers with a creamcentre. Others to watch out for include PeterBrand’, which produces deep red blooms andwhose foliage turns red in autumn, contrasting well with ornamental grasses andbearded irises.

Peonies need mulching in spring, stakingand feeding with a general fertiliser in latesummer. The stems should be cut down toground level in autumn.

● Tie in new growth of climbers toprevent severe tangles later on. Tiein climbing roses horizontally toencourage flowering.● Fill gaps left between spring andsummer with tender perennials andeasy-to-grow annuals includingcosmos, nigella and pot marigold.● Buy potted lilies in bud and plantthem in the border for quick colourand fragrance.● Harden off aubergines, courgettes, marrows, peppers, pumpkins and tomatoes grown fromseed before planting outside.● Sow French and runner beans anderect supports for climbing beans.● Ensure fruit trees and busheshave enough water while the fruit issetting or fruitlets are often shed.● Cover the ground understrawberries with straw or mattingto protect the ripening fruit frommud and from slugs and other pests.● Give tired lawns a liquid feed for aquick pick-me-up.

IT’S NOT one of the easiest herbs togrow as it blackens at the first signs offrost and slugs love the foliage, but itsdelicious flavour which goes so well withsweet, juicy, home-grown tomatoes isamong my favourite tastes of summer, soit’s worth having a go. There are so manyvarieties it’s difficult to recommend justone and there are all sorts of flavoursincluding lemon-flavoured, minty andorange-flavoured. Basil is best treated likea tender annual and sown in pots in awarm, well-ventilated spot indoors

before placing outside in a sunny, sheltered position. By mid-June you canstart sowing seeds outside, shallowly, inpots alongside tomatoes and peppers, which like the same conditions. Pick theend leaves, because more will then beproduced from sideshoots. Once it hasgone over, just pull it out and putsomething else in its place. You’ll needseveral pots on the go if you use a lot ofit. After picking the leaves feed the plantwith balanced liquid feed and let it growagain.

when it welcomed pupils fromStockton Heath Primary School toits Walton Locks development.

During the visit, the childrenwere given a tour of Walton Locks,as well as receiving an informativetalk on how to stay safe aroundconstruction areas. They also learntabout how David Wilson HomesNorth West build and use certainproducts.

We wanted to raiseawareness of the dangers buildingsites can harbour among those closeby, particularly local children.

“We have really enjoyed workingwith Stockton Heath PrimarySchool, and are pleased to say thatthe talk and information was verywell received among the pupils. The
