How do I prepare my hides for tanning?

1. Pack hides in a plastic bag like the picture below to prevent any leakage

2. Place frozen hide in a plastic bin and insulate with newspaper. NO PACKING PEANUTS PLEASE!

3. Seal well with packing tape

4. Send frozen hides ONLY on a Monday or Tuesday by two-day shipping service so we receive your hide before and thawing occurs

Tip: Preventing Slippage/Bald Spots After Tanning

Slippage and balding occurs when a hide is NOT prepared quickly and decomposition sets in due to the animals natural bacteria. This bacterium starts working immediately and will, until the hide is frozen, scrapped(fleshed), dried and salted, or Stop Rot is applied. Generally speaking, if an animal smells, expect trouble. Pay extra attention to the ears, and dry carefully or use extra salt to prevent slippage. Just remember, the tanning process can NOT make the hair come off, only improper handling (too long or too warm) PRIOR to tanning will make this happen.

Solution: Skin And Dry Or Freeze Your Hide As Soon As Possible

FROZEN Preparation

• To prevent hair slippage, skin AS SOON AS POSSIBLE and put in freezer immediately

• DO NOT SALT A HIDE before freezing as salt prevents freezing. (Only salt and dry a hide if it has been fleshed)

• Lay hide flat and allow at least one hour for entire hide to cool. (If folded immediately, the inside of the hide may not freeze properly and rotting or slippage may occur.)

• Once cooled, fold hide skin to skin and freeze until hide is FROZEN COMPLETELY (this could be an extra day untill the inside of the hide is frozen)

My Hides are DRIED.

FLESH/DRY Preparation

SEND FROZEN HIDES TO US ON A

MONDAY OR TUESDAY ONLY!

If you live in these states, send your

frozen hides by regular UPS, FedEx, SpeeDee

Delivery or Priority Mail. We’ll get your shipment from the

above states in 1-2 days and that is fine.

If you live in these states, send your frozen hides by 2 day Fed EX or UPS Blue Label. You do NOT need to send overnight, simply confirm with your carrier that your shipment will be delivered in 2 days or less. Be certain you do

NOT send by regular UPS or FedEx or US Mail; you

are risking spoilage of your valuable hides.

• To prevent hair slippage, skin and flesh AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

• Remove all fat and tissue layers COMPLETELY. (Failure to do so may cause slippage and hard, brittle patches on hide after tanning.)

• DO NOT FREEZE AFTER FLESHING (Try to avoid the freezing/thawing process as much as possible)

• Lay flat and salt hide (Make sure there are no overlapping layers or rotting may occur.)

• Heavily salt skin to dry hides on a rack or off the ground if possible until they are mostly dried. Then, fold hides fur in, drain the moisture and heavily salt again until dried completely for easier shipping. This may take a week or so.

We can also make vest, jackets, garments and blankets from your tanned African

animals. We can either tan the hides or use your tanned hides (or the back half of your tanned hide) to mix and match to custom design the garment of your choice. It will be unique and you will love wearing your

special design. Just call and tell us what you have to work with and a few ideas of what

you want for a garment and we will custom make your garment accordingly.
