Big Data will emerge from its HyperHype cycle in an evolved avatar. The algo will be democratised very very soon. The competitive advantage in having the 'machinery' is likely to be short-lived.This is a re-purposing , nay , re-telling of an earlier deck...

THE BIG DATA HYPER HYPE

The noise around ‘Big Data’ is resounding , persistent and overwhelming. It’s omnipresent and, if all the hype is to be believed, will lead to Big Users of Big Data being omniscient!

After all, the information which tells you how exactly John will behave or Sally will buy or even what Asok is thinking is there.

All you need is the will and the resources to pan the gold nuggets/other precious stones (Variety!) from the wide ,deep, rich (Volume!) rapid-flowing (Velocity!) stream , sift them , refine them and you’re on your way!

As for the Luddites who doubt…well, what did you expect?

After The Flood :The Post

Hyper-hype Stage

The Big Data Flood with all the attendant changes is inevitable.• It will lead to short-term

competitive strength for effective early adopters.

• When it gets democratised and it will; the enormous pace at which this will happen will also be unprecedented.

• Wisdom and Creative Design Thinking will re-emerge as the game-changers!

BE REAL , BE AUTHENTIC"To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy who

is just like a hundred thousand other little boys…To you I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes…To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I shall be unique in all the world....”

“To forget a friend is sad. Not everyone has had a friend. And if I forget him, I may become like grown-ups who are no longer interested in anything but figures.”

Muder Chiba

When we deal with models and constructs , norms and metrics …we tend to ,over a period of time, lose touch with ‘real’ things. We tend to presume that map IS the territory*…

THERE’S LIFE BEYOND FIGURES“Grown-ups like numbers. When you tell them about a

new friend, they never ask questions about what really matters. They never ask: "What does his voice sound like?" "What games does he like best?" "Does he collect butterflies?" They ask: "How old is he?" "How many brothers does he have?" "How much does he weigh?" "How much money does his father make?" Only then do they think they know him.”

“But, of course, for those of us who understand life, we would not care less about figures.”

Numbers and figures tell us just part of the story. An old maxim comes to mind- quantitative data provides the skeleton , the structure and qualitative the flesh and the descriptive features. A barebones skeleton has no character and the flesh and muscles are a colourless pool without the structure of the quantitative…

CHILDLIKE CURIOSITY : DEVELOP A SENSE OF WONDER“I know …a certain red-faced gentleman. He has never

smelled a flower. He has never looked at a star. He has never loved any one. He has never done anything in his life but add up figures. And all day he says over and over, just like you: 'I am busy with matters of consequence!'”

“..no grown-up will ever understand how such a thing could be so important.”

"They are pursuing nothing at all," said the switchman. "They are asleep in there, or if they are not asleep they are yawning. Only the children are flattening their noses against the windowpanes.”

“Only the children know what they are looking for.”

ENVISION THE CATHEDRAL !

“If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.”

“A rock pile ceases to be a rock pile the moment a single man contemplates it, bearing within him the image of a cathedral.”

“You are beautiful, but you are empty", he went on. "One could not die for you.”

Page 9: Big Data Hyper Hype and The Little Prince

DISCIPLINE IN TASKS IS STILL ESSENTIAL…“My life is very monotonous," the fox said. "I hunt chickens; men

hunt me. All the chickens are just alike, and all the men are just alike. And, in consequence, I am a little bored.”

“It's a question of discipline,' the little prince told me later on. 'when you've finished washing and dressing each morning, you must tend your planet. You must be sure you pull up the baobabs regularly, as soon as you can tell them apart from the rosebushes, which they closely resemble when they're very young. It's very tedious work, but very easy.”

“But if you come at just any time, I shall never know at what hour my heart is to be ready to greet you… One must observe the proper rites.. .”

Page 10: Big Data Hyper Hype and The Little Prince

…ALLOW FOR SERENDIPITY

“And at night you will look up at the stars. It's too small, where I live, for me to show you where my star is.

'People have stars, but they aren't the same.

“Sometimes, there is no harm in putting off a piece of work until another day.”

“What makes the desert beautiful,' said the little prince, 'is that somewhere it hides a well...”

“It is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your rose so important.”

“It is only with the heart that one can see clearly. What is essential is invisible to the eye.”

BEHAVIOUR VS. ATTITUDE : BALANCE IS THE KEY

“I should have judged her according to her actions, not her words. she perfumed my planet and lit up my life”

“The house, the stars, the desert -- what gives them their beauty is something that is invisible!”

“The thing that is important is the thing that is not seen”

Page 12: Big Data Hyper Hype and The Little Prince

ADD PERSPECTIVE 1

“But I, alas, do not know how to see

sheep through the walls of boxes. Perhaps I am a

little like the grown-ups. I have had to grow old.”

Page 13: Big Data Hyper Hype and The Little Prince

ADD PERSPECTIVE 2“I showed the grown ups my masterpiece,

and asked them if my drawing scared

them. They answered why be

scared of a hat? My drawing was not a picture of a hat. It was a picture of a

boa constrictor digesting an

elephant.”

Page 14: Big Data Hyper Hype and The Little Prince

ADD PERSPECTIVE 3“'The stars are beautiful

because of a flower you don't see”

“The most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or

touched, they are felt with the heart.”

“What is essential is

invisible to the eye.”

HAVE GUTS TO STAND FOR…CHAMPION YOUR IDEA“What a queer planet!”… And the people have no

imagination. They repeat whatever one says to them . . . On my planet I had a flower; she always was the first to speak . . .”

“...My flower...I'm responsible for her.”

You are responsible for your flower , your idea! In the beginning the idea or insight is weak , with ‘four little thorns’ to protect it. You have the responsibility to support it , to protect it and to nurture until it can stand on its own!

VOID CIRCULAR LOGIC !“The Little Prince : What are you doing there?

The Tippler : I am drinking. The Little Prince : Why are you drinking? The Tippler : So that I may forget. The Little Prince : Forget what? The Tippler : Forget that I am ashamed. The Little Prince : Ashamed of what? The Tippler : Ashamed of drinking!”

“This was a merchant who sold pills that had been invented to quench thirst. You need only swallow one pill a week, and you would feel no need for anything to drink. Why are you selling those?" asked the little prince.Because they save a tremendous amount of time," said the merchant. "Computations have been made by experts. With these pills, you save fifty-three minutes in every week."And what do I do with those fifty-three minutes?“Anything you like...“As for me," said the little prince to himself, "if I had fifty-three minutes to spend as I liked, I should walk at my leisure toward a spring of fresh water.”

Oftentimes analysis leads us onto a nice circular path…it’s great analysis , it’s logically , elegantly beautiful but one has lost sight of the end-objective of the exercise , the decision at hand !

Page 17: Big Data Hyper Hype and The Little Prince

WORDS AND BIVALENCE :BE CAREFUL WITH MEANING-MAKING

“He had taken seriously words which were without importance, and it made him very unhappy.”

“I shall look at you out of the corner of my eye, and you will say nothing. Words are the source of misunderstandings.“

But this is the very condition of existence. To become spring, means accepting the risk of winter. To become presence, means accepting the risk of absence.”

Remember :A barebones skeleton has no character and the flesh and muscles are a colourless pool without the structure…a holistic view will provide real solutions!

*HYPER HYPE*

Use this term to try to adequately describe some of the

360-degree high decibel phenomena in the environment today which carry you away with sheer pressure.

You have trolls after you if you attempt to swim against the current.

Luddite! Will be the call if you try to undermine the ‘trend’.

It’s not hype , it’s Hyper Hype !

Hyper Hype build-up is all around us-politics, sports , consumer brands , service businesses…

*‘Googled’ the term and initially found a musician with this name but few references to the context I use it in.A brilliant, albeit ‘wicked’, use in this context :http://changearc.wordpress.com/2013/09/01/hyper-hype-curve/
