He grew $106,000 for a President’s Endowed Scholarship from acorns collected around the Century Tree at Texas A&M University. While on campus in September 2008 for his 30 th class reunion, Duffie saw the Century Tree laden with acorns. He thought it would be great to have a live oak grown from one of the acorns in the yard of his Vernon home. He collected and planted ten. None sprouted. “Only mature acorns will sprout,” he told Lions Monday, “and they aren’t mature until they fall to the ground in October. I was a month early.” In October 2009, Duffie was again on campus. This time he stuff his pockets with Century Tree acorns. He estimates about 50. Century Tree Funds President’s Scholarship

job for every Lion who can help.
Duffie learned that parasitic wasps lay eggs in live oak acorns. The embryos eat so many seeds, that only one in five will sprout. He also learned how to grow trees with fibrous, rich, dense systems rather
than one big tap root.
“It was time to go big or go home,” he said. “In October 2010, I spent six hours harvesting more than 3,000 Century Tree acorns.” The goal was to raise 500 to 600 trees and sell them to raise funds for the scholarship.
For two years, he raised 560 live oaks in three-gallon containers in his back yard. When they were four to six feet tall, he rented a U-Haul trailer a delivered around
180 trees to Grapevine, College Station and Abilene where Aggies selected their pre-paid trees. The trees were sold for $250 each with discounts for multiple trees. Two Aggies bought eight each.
“Marketing was mostly word of mouth. When Aggies find something unique, they cannot wait to tell their friends and classmates.
“I asked buyers to send tree planting photos. Everyone had a story. They were decked out in their Aggie gear, with dogs, grandparents, newborns, you name it. Most trees were sold in Texas, but I also shipped them to Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia, Louisiana, Tennessee and Washington. Many of the buyers were couples who got engaged under the Century Tree.”
The first Century Tree President’s Endowed Scholarship is scheduled to be presented to a freshman in August. If they maintain their grades, they will have the scholarship four years.

He and his wife, Donna, have lived in our community for thirty years. In that time, they have raised two beautiful daughters, and now enjoy two grandchildren, Jack and Mason. Rick must be a thrill seeker. Not only was he a school teacher and principal for CSISD – as if that is not dangerous enough, but his hobby is riding motorcycles. I’m sure you can agree that both can be classified as dangerous.
Serving our community is how Rick has chosen to spend his life. In fact, just like so many of our members, his love for serving brought him to our club.
Be sure to look for Rick at our next meeting and introduce yourselves.
Lions Notes Lion Dave Ruesink presented calendars of handmade paper to Lion President Don Dickenson and 2nd Vice President Diane Jones-Meier. The calendars were gifts from Lion Yuba Bajracharya of Kathmandu, Nepal, a visitor to our club earlier this year. . . . The club received a banner patch and rocker for our 400 percent participation in the campaign of Texan and PID Mike Butler who is running for second vice president of Lions International. The election is July 8 at the International Convention. . . . Last call for input on next year’s budget. Give input to Lion Treasurer Terry Rowan, Lion Diane Jones-Meier or Lion Don Dickenson.

Chocolate-Themed Fundraiser Needs Committee Members
If you are already part of the committee or would like to be involved in the planning of the chocolate-themed fundraiser, please come to the meeting tomorrow (Wednesday) at Jose’s, 3824 S Texas Ave, at noon. If you can, please come a little early to place your order before the meeting starts. First on the agenda will be to select the date. Then we will assign subcommittee responsibilities. We have a lot of work to do in seven months, but I know there are plenty of Lions who can get it accomplished.
