Figures from UCAS showed that 580,000 applied for undergraduate places in 2014 compared to just 559,000 in 2013. The figures also revealed that there was a gender gap in applications with more women applying compared to men.

February 2014- school closed!England saw some of the most dramatic floods in February 2014. The floods caused mayhem and chaos, resulting in school, colleges and universities closing. Were you affected by the floods?

May 2014- european electionsThe British public voted for their MEP (Member of European Parliament) in May 2014. These elections gained massive media coverage as people debated issues effecting education, migration, health and employment. The next general election will take place in May 2015 when we will elect our MPs (Members of Parliament) into the House of Commons. Which Political Party will come out on top- Labour, Lib Dems, Conservatives or someone else……

Interview questions you don’t expect!

What do you knoW about us?This is often one of the first questions you’ll be asked and is a great way to start the interview. The information you give will be different for each organisation. If you’re applying to work in a school, express information about the school size, student intake or new developments. If you’re applying to work in a private company, recite facts about the company size, team members and company history. useful tip: Information about companies/organisations can be found on the ‘About Us’ page on their website. Google is also a great place to search for information.

What is your salary expectation? Most jobs will have salaries displayed on the advert. It can be a set figure (£15k) or a figure range (£15-18k). When jobs are advertised without a salary, the interview will often ask the interviewee what salary they are expecting to receive. Do some research before the interview to check what salary is typical for the role. Your research should include checking job boards to see what other companies are offering for similar roles, researching the company to see what they‘re offering for other roles and speaking to friends and family for their advice.useful tip: Always start high- within reason- as it’s easier to negotiate down then to negotiate up!

do you have any questions? The answer to this question is always yes! The interviewer wants to check that you are interested and engaged in the company as well as interested and engaged in the interview. Fantastic questions to ask include does the company/organisation have any plans to expand this year? Will you be recruiting more people this year? What can this role lead to? useful tip: Do some research before the interview and plan 2-3 questions in advance.

Interview questions you don’t expect!

explain the gaps on your cv?If you’ve been out of education or employment for over 6 months, the interviewer will ask you to explain the gap on your CV. Always be honest about the gaps on your CV and don’t be embarrassed to explain that you have been job-hunting. The interviewer is simply trying to understand you work history and employment timeline. If you’ve been out of work for other reasons (e.g. medical) feel free to reveal this to the interviewer. useful tip: To avoid long gaps on your CV, try to find volunteering work, short courses or charitable work to fill your time.

hoW did you Find the intervieW?The interviewer is seeking feedback on how you found the interview experience including the questions asked, your responses and the general rapport. Express how you found the interview and give a summary of what you enjoyed most. This will often be the last question of the interview so be brief, clear and concise. useful tip: Always offer positive feedback – the aim is to get hired!

tell us about a current story in the press? It is important to stay up-to-date with current affairs and the interviewer wants to know that you’re engaged with what is happening. They’re not expecting you to know about every political development, names of cabinet members or facts about international relations. However, they are expecting you to know aspects of what is being reported in the news and any signification news stories that could affect the industry or sector you’re planning to work within. For example, if you’re planning to work in a car company, have there been any news stories about car prices or car factory closures? Keep updated with news within your sector. useful tip: On the week of your interview, read newspapers to stay updated on current affairs.

Marketing Professional Marketing is a booming sector

across the world. More companies are noticing the benefi ts selling their products and services in the ‘right’ way to increase sales. So this has created an exciting sector for marketing professionals. The role of a marketing professional is to promote a product, event or service to an audience. This audience can be local (100+ people),

national (1000+ people) or global (1million+ people). Marketing

professionals tend to specialise in one or two methods of marketing. For instance, some Marketing professional specialise in Print and Digital Marketing whilst others specialise in Television and radio marketing.

get into MarketingThere is not set route into marketing careers. Some people choose to study a marketing degree at university and then begin a career as a Junior Marketing Assistant. Once they’re in this position they can choose to work their way up or partake in a professional marketing course to further their skills. Alternatively, others can choose to join a marketing apprenticeship scheme. This will promote a combination of studying for a

marketing qualifi cation alongside with real paid work. It is important to know that you do not need a Marketing Degree to work in marketing. Anyone with or without a marketing degree can enrol in a professional marketing course to become qualifi ed.

tips:A great way to practice your marketing skills is to volunteer to help promote a local or community event. This could be a school fair, college ball, local sports match or festive play. Donate your time to marketing the event and share your ideas on the best way to advertise the event to the maximum amount of people.

After this you can join the companies Head Offi ce working in Hr, Operations or Logistics. Many retailer Board Members started off on the shop fl oor!

tips:If you’re still in education, get your foot into a great retail company by applying for a weekend job. This is a smart way to get vital retail experience. 1 day a week in a retail job will offer invaluable experience.

BakerBaking has never been so popular in the UK! The British public are now obsessed with baking and cooking shows such as The Great British Bake off, Hell’s Kitchen and Master Cher. There has also been a rapid increase in the number of Baking shops and café’s on our high streets. If you have a passion for baking, now is a great time to enter the sector. You choose to bake cakes, pastries or pies. You can even choose who to sell your product to: individuals (café), companies (order online) or retailers (factory production).

get into baking:Although some people have a natural ability for baking, most people enrol on a baking course or cooking apprenticeship. Cooking courses are widely available at local colleges across the country. Entry requirements for these courses tend to be less strict as they are looking for people with passion and interest. Cooking apprenticeships are equally fantastic for people seeking hands-on ‘real’ experience whilst they are training.

tips:There is no to spend money on expensive baking books, there are 100s of free recipes online for you to try at home. Try to fi nd some work experience in a baking shop. If this is unsuccessful, widen your search to include restaurants, cafes, pubs and catering companies- they will all practice an elements of baking in their kitchens.

Gap Year Advice with Frontier – Part 1

13

GAP YEAr ADVICE

We asked david david Fairley FroM Frontier to advise our readers about gap years. read on to see iF a gap year is right For you!

Why should young people consider taking a gap year?

Gap years are fantastic. They are allow you to learn new skills, do something worthwhile, and have amazing experiences that you will remember forever. It can also provide really good time to think if you’re not certain of what you want to do with your life. Being exposed to new sights, cultures and customs might inspire you with new career ideas that you are passionate about. Another huge benefit is the qualifications you can gain that look really good on your CV, or when applying to university. From scuba PADI qualifications, to Teaching English as a Foreign Language, or simply just the obvious skills you will be able to list such as fund-raising, working in teams, problem solving under pressure, and understanding of other cultures. It puts you ahead in the highly

What types of costs are involved?

Costs vary greatly depending on the length and nature of the project. A two week teaching project will cost a few hundred pounds where a long-term marine conservation placement, with PADI dive training qualifications, may cost a few thousand.

What types of projects can young people take part in overseas?

There are a great range of worthwhile gap year projects around the world. Those interested in conservation can live on an established beach or wilderness camp, learn conservation surveying techniques and contribute to ongoing grass-roots conservation projects. You can even earn a qualification in Tropical Habitat Conservation.

Volunteering as a teacher is a great way to experience the true nature of the country you are travelling in whilst giving something back by offering your skill and enthusiasm to help kids from poor backgrounds. no previous teaching experience is necessary and you can gain a TEFL qualification during your placement.

Ethical Adventure trails offer the chance to travel through a variety of countries with a group of like-minded travellers and an experienced guide, visiting the most unforgettable locations and spending some of your time helping at a teaching or marine conservation project.

5 TIPS FoR FIRST TIME TRAvEllERS First time travel can be daunting, but if you make sure you carry out the right preparation, then it can be far less nerve racking. often, many people’s venture into travelling on their own for the first time comes when they embark upon a gap year; and by following simple tips can be all it takes to have a stress free time away, and will allow you to have much more time to be excited about the trip you are about to take. 1) Before you have booked your flights or figured out exactly when you want to go away, an important thing to do is check the Foreign Commonwealth office website, as it will tell you what the political and economic situation in the country that you want to visit is, and will alert you to any disturbances that may have occurred recently.

2) Booking early is a great way to save money on flights and keep your budget as big as possible, but always be sure that you know exactly what you are planning on doing so that you don’t book a flight and discover it is for the wrong location or date.

3) Simple but important things can sometimes be forgotten in the excitement of getting ready to go away, like making sure you have the right visa and insurance for where you want to go, and what you want to do when you get there (such as work, or just travel). Photocopying important documents and keeping these photocopies away from the originals is a great idea, just in case anything happens to your real passport, visa, driving licence or insurance.

4) Taking a cash card or cash passport as well as previously exchanged currency is another handy way to make sure you will always have some money, if anything were to happen to your bank cards or notes.

5) Get hold of a medical kit that will have the basic items needed for the specific country you are going to, and learn how to use it. Make sure you have asked your GP what vaccinations or tablets you might need, and get them sorted well before you go away. And one of the most important things to remember, pack light!

EMBArrASSInG qUESTIOnS

1) do cvs have to be printed in black ink?It is always best to print your CV in black ink. Black ink is widely accepted by most employers. Exception to the ruleSome job vacancies require a unique CV using colour and images. Such CVs are common for graphic, art or design jobs. 2) can i have a 4 page cv?Most employers expect CVs to be between 1-2 pages of A4. A good CV will show a clear outline of your work experience, educational history and key skills. Employers will gather in-depth information from the cover letter, personal statement or application form. 3) should i include my dob (date of birth) on a cv?Including your DOB on a CV is a matter of personal choice. You do not have to disclose your current age or DOB on a CV. Exception to the RuleSome jobs might have a strict age criteria (e.g. 16-24 apprenticeships). This will require disclosing your age. 4) do companies accept hand written cvs? Most companies will expect a typed CV that is clear and easy to read.Remember Using a computer to create a CV will have the added benefits of spelling and grammar programmes checking your work.

1) Why should i dress smart to an interview?Dressing smart to an interview will make you look professional, formal and credible to the interviewer. A face-to-face interview is often the final stage of the recruitment process, so it is essential to create a good impression and sell yourself as the best candidate for the job. Remember You don’t have to dress smart all the time. Some companies have causal dress policies or uniforms. 2) Why are interviews in stages? The competition for jobs is huge. Companies can receive up to 300 applications for 1 role which means they need to filter out the best candidates in stages. Unsuitable candidates will gradually leave the recruitment process at each stage until they find the right candidate. 3) What is a telephone interview? The telephone interview is usually the second stage of the recruitment process (after the application stage). Telephone interviews last between 10-20 at a prescheduled date and time. Telephone interviews tend to be informal conversations used to gather a better understanding of your application or CV.

eu new lawTreaty of rome 1957 signed by West Germany, France, Italy, Belgium and Luxemburg. Britain’s membership was accepted in 1973. reason for lawThe European Union was set up to allow movement of people, commerce and travel between the nations signed up to the treaty. It also laid out powers and laws for all member countries to follow.

iMportance For youThe EU offers you great opportunities to work, travel and study in another EU country. There are fewer restrictions for EU members (i.e. no need for a VISA when travelling) and benefits of citizenship rights when working or living in another EU country (i.e. access to their education or health system).

today 1000s of young Brits are taking advantage of their EU status. Some have migrated to work in Germany’s booming economy while others are studying in French university which offer lower tuition fees.

Business ownership can come in all forms. You can own a shop, gym, café, hotel, design agency, car park, bakery, nightclub, dental surgery, butchers, cab office.... the possibilities are endless! However there are some common skills and traits that are shared by all businessmen and businesswomen- regardless of their business.

do you share these traits?

common skills & traitsvisionary: Business owners have visions of what they want from their business. This vision drives them to succeed and offers them direction. self-Motivated: Unless you’ve started a business with friends or family, most businesses start off as a 1-man-band or 1-woman-band. Therefore, business owners need to be extremely self-motivated to achieve success. hard-working: Business is not easy and the first 5 years (or sometimes longer) can be really tough. Business owners need to be hard-working to keep their businesses open and their vision alive
