Kirk Morrison
Interim Board Chair
Dear Friends,
It is with great pleasure that we deliver the 2016-2017 Annual Report for Big Brothers of Regina.
This past fiscal year marks the 5th consecutive record-breaking year for growth in the number of youth served across all
programs in the communities of Regina, Weyburn & now Moose Jaw. While this year has seen a slight decrease in the rate of
growth, the emphasis for the last half of the year was to focus internally on our processes to ensure compliance and
sustainable development for the years to come.
This past year also saw the organization begin to engage the community for insight on our new strategic plan which will be
implemented in the upcoming year. We learned that our community would like to see us continue to forge forward and strive
for excellence in how we conduct ourselves from a service delivery to youth vantage point, and an organizational development
perspective as well. We are encouraged and driven by the confidence our community has in our ability to provide more and
more mentoring programs to the youth of our service areas.
As our journey continues onward, we remain focused above all, on being true to the mission and vision of the organization.
Every child who needs a mentor will get one, and it will always be through our people that we ensure this commitment to youth
is realized.

About Us
7
We believe every child should have the opportunity to reach his or her potential – both as individuals, and as citizens. –
and that by doing so, they will not only do well, they will also do good.
We believe that by changing the course of young lives we can in turn, be changing the course of our community’s
future. That it could lead to a reduction in poverty and unemployment, to safer schools and neighborhoods and to a
renewed optimism for economic and societal growth. That it could even lead to change on a broader, more far reaching
scale.
We believe that opening a child’s eyes to what is, opens their minds to what could be.
Since 1971, Big Brothers of Regina has been making a positive difference in the lives of Regina’s youth by developing
and implementing a wide range of mentoring programs for both in school and outside of school.
Serving as role models, our mentors teach by example the importance of giving and giving back, of staying in school
and of having respect for family, peers and community. Each time we pair a child with a mentor, we start something
incredible. A life changing relationship built on friendship, trust and empowerment.
Witnessing the transformation of a child into a confident, concerned and motivated young person is a remarkable thing.
Ushering them into adulthood, seeing them grow into a successful, responsible member of the community and society
at large is even more satisfying. Proudly, its something our staff, volunteers and donors help make happen everyday,
and we are very grateful for their generosity and support.

2016-2017 Highlights

2016 - 2017 represented another successful growth year for Big Brothers of Regina.
On the program front, the organization realized overall growth of 17% from the previous year, across all of our
mentoring programs. Our programing served 300 youth in total for 2016-2017 from 256 youth in the previous
year. We continued to deploy tried and tested marketing assets in Regina, Weyburn and now Moose Jaw and all
communities realized consistent and successful responses to all of our calls for new volunteers
We were also successful in increasing our revenues to sustain our reserves growing our overall revenue yet
again by annual budget also increased by roughly 3.5% with a modest surplus of just over 1% overall.
2016-2017 also saw another important step in the direction of regionalization occur, as we were able to
successfully bring back select mentoring programs to youth in the community of Moose Jaw. The community
has responded well to our return and we are confident that our programming will continue to gain momentum as
the community continues to embrace us and the impact we are having on youth in Moose Jaw.
Our regularly scheduled accreditation also confirmed that we have come a long way in the last 5 years with
some key learnings that will lead to even more continual advancement of the organization.

Testimonials
I decided to sign Braden up for the Big Brother program, because he was missing family in his life, especially the role of a father. I
thought this would be a great opportunity for Braden to have a male role model and mentor, and to give him a different
perspective. Braden was struggling at school and daycare with constant phone calls and letters coming home. The teachers and I
were trying to figure out how we could connect with Braden to give him a better outlook on his situation. We worked on different
programs and received counselling. He was having emotional breakdowns and feeling unloved and unwanted. When kids talked
about their family in regards to brothers, uncles and fathers Braden couldn’t understand why he couldn’t have this. This was a
constant issue bothering Braden and causing him emotional distress beyond what a little boy should feel so young.
Once Braden received his Big Brother he became excited. He was so nervous the first few times because he didn’t know how
long this would last. As time passed Braden would ask if it was “Big Brother weekend”. He became excited. His Big would take
him to the park to play, laser quest adventures, to his home to visit his dog, play board games and jam on his guitar. They are
planning so many more adventures together. Braden’s teachers have said what a positive impact this has had on Braden in
regards to attitude, behaviour and emotions. Braden is calmer and feels so much more important to the world. His Big has really
made a positive impact on him to make him feel important, loved and special. Braden has learned how to be more patient, more
pleasant and more relaxed about things to come. His Big has a nature about him that is so relevant to Braden, which has made
him realize his worth and potential. Braden is doing things he would never try before because of his Big. Moms are great and can
do a lot but mentors are priceless in helping to reinforce life and its value.
I can tell you Braden is now waiting for his Big so he sits on the step or by the window waiting with excitement but the real value
from Big Brothers is when he comes home. He enters the house with this intense aura, you can’t help but to feel the emotion of
happiness emitting from him, it is truly heart-melting. Big Brothers has given Braden confidence but most importantly self-worth.
This is a program I hope Braden will be a part of for a long time, even as a way to give back later in life, with what he has gained.
