Next Big Bend Chapter Monthly Meeting - November 20, 2014 Hello FES! I don’t know about all of you but I am really enjoying this colder weather! Most nights I can leave my window open and be lulled to sleep by the sound of crickets. Once it starts hitting the freezing temperatures I have no doubt I will be changing my tune! By the time you all will be reading this, the mid-term elections will be over. Whether you voted for Rick Scott or Charlie Christ, Steve Southerland or Gwen Graham, it was an exciting voting season. I hope everyone had a chance to vote and understands how politics affects our business and our day to day concerns in engineering. A wonderful opportunity to learn more about how politics affects us as engineers, or to learn more about how to get involved in politics would be attending Legislative Days. True the event is a ways off, February 3 rd and 4 th , it should be on everyone’s calendar. FES, as an organization, is very involved in the professional interests of all engineers in Florida. The reservation deadline is January 23 rd and if you have not been, you really should try to attend. Finally, in this busy month of November, I hope everyone has a wonderful start to the holiday season. With Thanksgiving almost upon us, I hope everyone has a chance to give thanks for all that we are fortunate for. Christmas is just around the corner (I even saw Christmas decorations at Target already!) and things are about to get more chaotic. With all that is going on, don’t forget to stay involved in FES and I hope to see everyone at our meeting on November 21 st . Audra Hayden, P.E. The State of Bridge Building in North America Presented by: Mr. Dwight Dempsey, PE, SE, Regional Director, Figg Bridge Engineers

According to the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 25% of the 600,000 American highway bridges are either structurally deficient or functionally obso-lete. With the U.S. population expected to increase by 140 million people over the next 50 years, the nation’s transportation system is faced with many challenges. A variety of construction contract delivery methods are currently being used to build new and replacing bridges that are being tailored to best meet the needs of the owner for their project. Current and future trends in bridge construction highlight the use of the latest innovative materials and technologies to create longer, slender bridge spans with long-er service life and less maintenance while reducing their carbon footprint on the envi-ronment. Bridges are being built quicker through accelerated bridge construction (ABC) methodologies with use of modular bridge elements that are prefabricated off site to reduce onsite construction time. With an eye towards the future, there are am-ple opportunities to get more bridges built through creative solutions using leading-edge technologies and innovative financing. Dwight Dempsey, P.E., S.E. is a Regional Director for FIGG Bridge Engineers, Inc. based out of Tallahassee, FL. FIGG has exclusively specialized in bridges for 36 years providing bridge design and construction services in 41 states and 6 countries while being honored with 355 bridge design awards for our customers. Dwight has been in-volved in the design and construction of major bridge projects totaling more than $1.4 billion in construction. He was on site as project engineer for the new I-35W bridge in Minneapolis, MN and the new South Norfolk Jordan Bridge in Norfolk, VA. Dwight has a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from The Citadel (2001) and his M.S.C.E. from The Georgia Institute of Technology (2002). He is a Registered Professional Engineer in Florida and a Registered Structural Engineer in Hawaii. Dwight was honored by the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Tallahassee Branch as 2009 Young Engineer of the Year.

FAMU-FSU Student Chapter News http://famufsuasce2014.wix.com/2014 Student chapter meetings are regularly scheduled every other Thursday at 7:30pm in Room B-221.

Order of the Engineer ASCE-FES FAMU-FSU Student Chapter will be hosting the Order of the Engineer ceremony this December at the College of Engineering. This is a very exciting opportunity for eligible students to become involved in a tradition that began in 1970, and one that will be recognized by countless professionals in the future. What is it? The Order of the Engineer is a ceremony in which engineers take an oath which signifies the pride and responsibility that they will uphold as they further their careers in the field of engineering. Who is eligible? Students who are within two semesters of graduating or graduates from an ABET accredited engineering school, or licensed professional engineers. When and where? The ceremony will be held at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering (2525 Pottsdamer Street) on December 1, 2014 at 6 pm. Cost? Registration for the event costs $15, and this includes a ring (which is sized to fit your pinky finger) and an official Order of the Engineer certificate. MOST IMPORTANTLY: How do I sign up? All you need to do is fill out the attached registration form and bring $15 cash or check to me, Annemarie Riecken, and I will size you for a ring. These forms must be filled out and brought to me with the registration fee BY NOVEMBER 17th. I will be in the A Atrium on Tuesdays and Thursdays between now and November 17th from 12pm to 2pm. Feel free to stop by with your form and I can size you then! If you need to meet with me at another time, or have any questions at all, please email me and I will try my best to meet you at a more convenient time! NSPE: Five 'Fun and Exciting' Facts About Engineering DID YOU KNOW THAT...

1. Engineers design running shoes for protection, performance, and comfort? Engineers understand how

much force travels from the ground through the shoe to the foot. Through the work of engineering, weight is

distributed throughout the whole foot -- heel to toe.

2. A civil engineer created the slippery part of the water slide? A civil engineer designed a pumping system

to circulate just the right amount of water to the flume. Without the right flow of water, there is no ride.

Additionally, civil engineers have designed the slide to withstand the weight of people, the water, and even

the force of the wind blowing on it.

3. The launch and return of spacecraft, from the Apollo to the Shuttle, is a monumental engineering tri-

umph? The space program has greatly expanded the world's knowledge base. The technological advance-

ment by engineers in energy, communications, materials, structures, and computers, have made space trav-

el possible.

4. Engineers play an instrumental role in the theme park industry? Theme park engineers are involved in

designing, building, lighting, and even controlling the crowd flow in theme parks around the world.

5. Computer engineers, in conjunction with animators, have created special effects in movies such as

"Jurassic Park," "Forrest Gump," and "Interview with the Vampire"? Through "morphing" technology, im-

ages are digitally mastered to appear realistic.

Committee (CEC) and Florida Building Commission (FBC)

TAC’s

FES is seeking qualified engineers to actively serve on the Florida Building

Commission TAC’s.

These Technical Advisory Committee’s (TAC’s) are divided into the many

areas including, but not limited to – Fire, Electrical, Plumbing, Structural, Ener-

gy, & Mechanical. More information can be found about the TAC’s

at www.floridabuilding.org.

Please contact CEC Chair Lesley Davidson, [email protected] for more information or

contact Samantha Hobbs [email protected] to volunteer.

The engineering profession needs to take a stand and be a part of the rules that govern Florida Buildings.
